Suggested correction: Not true. Anyone can have themselves removed as a beneficiary of a will. This is done by signing an Affidavit of Disclaimer of Inheritance at such time as someone becomes aware that they have been included in a will as a beneficiary. This is what Tim meant when he said he had removed himself from Olivia's will.

Yes, someone can have themselves removed, but the person whose Will this affects would have to be informed so they could reallocate how their estate will be divided after their death. That would include having a new Will drawn.

Field of Dreams (1989)

Question: Maybe someone with agricultural expertise can answer this. Ray's entire cornfield is large and obviously worth a lot of money. How much would the small section of corn that he plowed under for the baseball field have been worth in comparison to the rest of the crop once sold?

raywest

Chosen answer: In modern times (say, over the last 10 years) corn crops yield about $240 in profit per acre. In the mid-to-late 1980s (when this movie was made) the profit yield was far less, maybe only $150 or less profit per acre. Today, most farms produce about 1100 acres of corn per season; but, back then, most farms produced around 600 acres per season. Of course, these are all just average figures. So, let's say Ray had an average Iowa farm of 600 cultivated acres in 1989, expecting to profit $150 per acre. Optimistically, Ray would profit about $90,000 on his total crop. Meanwhile, the acreage of a large baseball field (with 90-foot baselines) is only about 5 acres. Which means Ray plowed under only about $750 worth of his crop profits to open up land area for the baseball field. It doesn't sound like much of a sacrifice at all, in terms of corn. Ray could still potentially profit $89,250 on his remaining crop (assuming he had the farm hands and heavy equipment to harvest it).

Charles Austin Miller

Thanks! The plot seemed a bit far-fetched by implying that he would go completely bankrupt because he sacrificed five acres to build a baseball field. And it appeared that not all of those five acres near the house were previously being used for growing corn. Factoring in the other incidental building costs would be a different consideration, however.

raywest

Yeah, the 5 acres of corn was not a bank-breaker. My impression was that Ray probably cut down the corn himself at no great loss; but he then mortgaged his farm to have that one small piece of the cornfield leveled and professionally developed with ballpark-quality turf, baselines, stadium lighting and fencing, et cetera, not to mention the bleachers and professional-grade field equipment...all of which would total, what, a half-million bucks (or more) in the 1980s? Ray's brother-in-law rightly thought it was an insane risk that would result in bank foreclosure.

Charles Austin Miller

I just watched it again. It's mentioned they paid for building the field using all their savings, so presumably nothing more is owed. Another year passes and there is another crop of corn to be harvested, but the bank is threatening to foreclose.

raywest

Maybe it's a plot hole or a deleted scene; because, if the bank was threatening foreclosure, then a mortgage of some kind existed somewhere.

Charles Austin Miller

He did spend a lot to build the field, and those profit margin numbers are best-case, no?

Yeah, all the figures I provided were just averages for the year 1989; but the figures do demonstrate that cutting down 5 acres of corn didn't significantly impact Ray's profit on the whole crop. It wasn't cutting down the corn that cost him money (as the original question inquired); rather, it was developing the cleared 5 acres into a level, professional-standard baseball field that cost him a ton of money.

Charles Austin Miller

Stupidity: If the song "Beyond the Sea" can be continuously broadcast on the radio station as a "cryptic clue" that there are survivors living on the island and the aliens are unable to swim, then someone could verbally announce that information over the radio and otherwise communicate with other humans. Patriot Games (1992)

Question: Near the end, during the dinner party at the Ryan house, how did Jack figure out that Lord Holmes' assistant, Watkins, was the IRA informant? He seemed to put it together very suddenly.

raywest

Answer: Because, while everyone was scared and running for safety, he was the only one cool and calm. Plus, everyone was together, he was the only one alone and appeared out of nowhere.

Answer: The guests seemed fine, but Jack realised the power was intentionally cut since the boathouse light was working. Maybe he saw the external powerlines were still intact and thus deduced the power was shut down from inside the house. Going toward the basement, he sees Watkins coming from the direction of the basement shortly after the power went out and this made Watkins the prime suspect of the power outage. Ryan may have also known about the existence of an informant in the Royal entourage due to his extensive study of the prior attack situation. Finally, it may have been inappropriate for Watkins to have a gun since he was not a bodyguard. Seeing the blood, the dead guard and the power switch off confirmed Jack's suspicions which led him to shoot Watkins to get more info.

Plot hole: Chelsea says that when her deceased father gave her one of his paintings (now missing), he wrote an inscription to her on the back. She says she cannot prove that he actually did this other than he noted it in his journal and she does not know where the journal is. However, when Chelsea's father presented the painting to her on her 8th birthday, there were at least 100 adults present at her party who witnessed him giving her the painting, writing the inscription, and signing his name on the back of the canvas which was displayed to the guests. Any number of these people could be contacted and corroborate her claim.

The Burbs (1989)

Plot hole: The Klopeks have only lived in the house for a month, but they somehow had a massive furnace/incinerator installed in the basement without anyone noticing the arrival of equipment, parts, delivery people, service technicians, etc. The neighbors only notice something is amiss after the new "furnace" is operational.

Other mistake: When Walter had to go to the hospital, he asked the Klopeks to pick up his mail. However, a mail slot is built into Walter's front door, so the mail carrier would drop the mail through there, directly into the house. There was no need for the Klopeks to gather the mail and keep it at their home. There was no outside mailbox, and it was established that the Klopeks went inside Walter's house. If anything, the mail should have been picked up off the floor and left on a table.

Downton Abbey (2019)

Plot hole: Laura rents a nice, large house, furnished with everything she needs, using a fake name, no job, no financial history, has no current bank account or credit cards or any references. She merely hands cash to the agent. She later lands a job without proof of identity, citizenship or residency (legally required), and has no references, no credible work history, or a SSN#. Laura is resourceful, but would lack the means to obtain a convincing fake identity and other false documentation.

You do need an ID, but you don't need to be a citizen.

You need to be a U.S. citizen, a "legal" resident, or have a specific type of work visa to be legally employed in this country. You also need an identity for renting a house or apartment and a prospective tenant doesn't just hand over a large sum of cash for the rent/damage deposit without immediately getting a receipt, while standing on the porch, and not first filling out paperwork.

To Catch a Thief (1955)

Revealing mistake: Foussard is killed and his body dropped off the cliff into the sea. There is a close-up shot of his head and torso, facing upward, that is supposed to be underwater. However, the actor is obviously not in water. His hair, that should be floating loosely around his head never moves and appears to be held in an outward position by stiff hair gel. Some type of "special effect" filter is layered over the entire shot to simulate water rippling over the corpse.

Plot hole: At the end, when Maureen is searching for John in orbit, she only radios him after Will sees him clinging to the floating wreckage. Suggested correction: The suit radios are fairly short range. This is seen on a number of occasions, such as when they need an extension antenna when stuck in the tar to contact others. The distances in space between the damaged Jupiter and Jupiter 2 are huge, and much further than the distance from the chariot stuck in tar back to Jupiter 2.

Regardless of whether they are short range, anyone looking for a survivor would continually call out to see if anyone is near enough to hear them.

Revealing mistake: Whenever Ralph is driving Travers in the limousine and the exterior of the car is seen in a long shot, there is no one riding in it other than the driver. From every view point of the windows that can be seen, there is no passenger inside where Travers is supposed to be seated.

raywest

Continuity mistake: Travers rides in a stretch limousine and Ralph, her driver, always puts her in the seat farthest back at the rear window. However, whenever she is seen inside the vehicle, she is sitting right behind Ralph, and easily reaches over and slides shut the window between the front seat and the back, even though there should be a wide space between where she is sitting and the driver's seat.

raywest

Other mistake: Travers arrives in Los Angeles and is seen at the airport and the hotel a short time later with just a small suitcase and a smaller carry-on bag, yet she has far too many clothes-suits, dresses, skirts, sweaters, blouses, sleepwear, shoes, and other accessories-than could possibly fit in them. Question: When Langdon and the Italian cop are trapped inside the sealed room of the Vatican archive and the air is shut off, how long could they actually survive in a space that size? In the movie, they start to suffocate almost immediately. (There is no long time lapse because the movie's plot depends on defusing the bomb within a few hours).

Chosen answer: In reality, they would have perished from CO2 poisoning long before the room ran out of breathable oxygen causing them to simply suffocate. Hitting the water at that angle and speed, so close to the shore, the ship could not have righted itself and gotten on that trajectory going that fast. It should have sunk or flipped over when it hit the water. Even if it could flip 360°, there was not enough time, distance, or height for the ship to continue on to its target at that speed. A little while after that, when Lisbeth and Blomkvist go to find Harriet, trees on the street are in full bloom. Being that I live in Seattle, I know that the most direct route from Forks to Seattle involves driving from the outer Washington coast through Port Angeles, then Sequim, going over the Hood Canal (toll) Bridge, before going to plus waiting for and riding a ferry across Puget Sound from Kingtston to Edmonds, and then at least another 25 minutes driving south on I-5 to Seattle. Even if Bella drove very fast (which she could not possibly do the entire way), it would take close to four hours one way, depending on traffic, wait and ride time for the ferry, stopping to pay at the toll bridge, and general driving conditions. Bella would also spend almost two hours in Seattle conducting her business with Mr. Jenks (which include driving through the busy downtown traffic, parking, going through the mall to the restaurant, and driving through the city again back to the ferry terminal) before returning to Forks. Depending on what time she originally left to when she got back home, it would be late in the evening. There are several other ways to get to Seattle from Forks, but they would take just as long or much longer.

Question: Are there more than three Star Fleet uniform colors? In the episode where Dr. Crusher is pulled into an alternate dimension aboard the Enterprise, there is an older science officer (not a recurring character) who is wearing a green uniform. When he is next to Dr. Crusher in her blue uniform, the difference is quite noticeable. Red is command, blue is sciences and medical, and gold is engineering, security, and ship services. What would green be for? I've only seen it in this one episode.

raywest

Chosen answer: The colors of the uniforms (like the models of the uniforms) change a lot. In the time frame of the original series for example the command color was gold/yellow and red was engineering. In TNG these colors are switched and altered. Also, the blue color for science has been more greenish in other periods of (Star Trek) time. And finally, uniform alterations are, to some extend, accepted (Troy often wears more casual clothing on duty and Worf adds cultural decorations to his uniform. To conclude: the green uniform might be a character's choice or an older type of uniform.

Instead, Sam hops on the next flight to NYC to search for Jonah by himself. Considering the many hours Jonah waits on the Empire observation deck alone, it is apparent that none of the above knew he was there.

raywest

Factual error: Jonah points to the LP record and tells Sam that "Paul is dead" can be heard when the record is played backwards. Myridon

I don't get it. It doesn't make sense.

What part doesn't make sense? Rome is filled with better things than a dog. To put it another way, it would be like if you went to one of the greatest sporting event live with on-field/court-side/ring-side tickets and when asked about the event you said "I thought the nachos were good."

Bishop73

It's a crude joke about Americans. It doesn't have to make sense. It's a joke that highlights the sense that Americans are crude, illiterate, with no culture. They believe a yellow dog (a common dog in the US) was the best thing to see.

After being knocked out by a "Mickey Finn," he wouldn't wake up, undress, and get into bed. Nor would Abby be able to do this - he is too heavy and bulky for her to move and undress alone, plus she would not have enough time to do that and also transport the many files, get them copied, and return them to the bungalow before Avery awoke. In a more generic sense though, it needn't be about gun violence per se. Just that you don't want to be on the receiving end of violence meant for someone else. In the movie, this was a way of telling Edward that if he could not defuse the situation, then others would be forced to harm the professor. Here, they weren't actually going to put Edward in harm's way. But if he failed to change the professor, then violence against the professor was forthcoming.

Question: Was the bank employee who was taken into the back room and "beaten" one of the robbers? If not, was he actually hit or was it fake like the "shot" hostage? I couldn't tell if he was one of the ones in the car at the end.

raywest

Chosen answer: The beating was real and no he wasn't one of the robbers. The men who participated in the hold up along with Clive Owen's character were all much younger than the employee who was beaten up. The much older guy in the car was not part of the robbery.

Lummie

Actually the guy that was beaten WAS part of the robbery. The four involved were the guy that was beaten, the guy that was Algerian that asked for a glass of water because his throat was "parched," the big-breasted girl that said she violated "Section 34 Double D," and Clive Owen, obviously. If you check the credits on IMDB, you will see that the guy that was beaten was Steve-O. They are all listed. The girl was Stevie and the other guy was Steve.

What about the rabbi?

I think he means Peter Hammond.

Not Algerian...Armenian. They asked if he was Albanian. He said no, Armenian...but I was born in Queens, I don't know the difference.

The bank employee who was beaten up was not one of the robbers because later in the film he attempts to pull the tray out from box 392 before Detective Frazier prevents him from doing so.

Answer: The Algerian guy was not Algerian. He was Armenian. And no, they're not the same thing.

Answer: Peter Frechette played the bank employee, Pewter Hammond. Who was beaten. Stever was played by another actor. To me, this was the weakest point in the movie. 1. It turns them all into bad guys for the beating. The move tried to make them into good guys (caring about violent games, etc) 2. The police would not have dropped it since there was a badly beaten victim. 3. He could have been another accomplice who didn't join them in the "pick-up" car a few days later. It was pretty weak.

Continuity mistake: Directly outside Scotty's living room window is an uninterrupted view of Coit Tower and Telegraph Hill. However, when the apartment is seen from the outside, there is a building across from where the window would be and Coit Tower is much further to the right.

General questions

Who was the noted film director that was killed about 10-15 years ago when a large rock was thrown from a street overpass and smashed through his car windshield? He probably would have been in his 70s or 80s by now.

raywest

Chosen answer: This is the only thing I found close: "November 19, 1998: Film director Alan Pakula (70) was killed while driving on the Long Island Expressway east of New York City. He lost control of his Volvo and crashed into a fence after a metal pipe crashed through his windshield. The pipe, which had been lying on the highway, was kicked up by another car. Pakula was taken to the North Shore Hospital in Plainview, New York, where he was pronounced dead. Pakula directed films such as Klute and All the President's Men." This site lists famous people that died in car accidents and that was the only director that died from something flying through his windshield. http://www.celebratetoday.com/autoceleb.html.

Hard Day's Night (1964)

Continuity mistake: As the boys leave in the helicopter at the end of the film, it says "BEATLES" on the aircraft's door. The name is split into two different sections to fit on the sliding panels. A few seconds later, one half of the name is missing, leaving only "BEA" on the left-hand side.

The One With The Cheap Wedding Dress - S7-E17

Continuity mistake: Monica chooses a wedding dress at an expensive boutique, then later goes to a discount store to buy the same style dress at a half-off sale. The dress she buys is different from the one in the boutique, having wider and frillier straps. When she tries it on later at the apartment, it is now the same style as the one at the boutique. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix mistake picture

Plot hole: Harry can now see the thestral creatures because he witnessed Cedric Diggory's death in "Goblet of Fire." However, he should have been able to see the thestrals after Professor Quirrell died from Harry's touch in "Philosopher's Stone". Quirrell crumbles into dust (dying) while Harry is still conscious, watching, and fully aware of what he is seeing, thus allowing it to fully sink into his consciousness. Harry faints "after" Quirrell is dead and as Voldemort's spirit passes through his body. Nor does it only have to be a friend or loved one who dies before the thestrals can be seen - it can be anyone, including an enemy like Quirrell. There only has to be an emotional response to the death, which can be love, hate, fear, shock, etc. (In the book, Harry did not see Quirrell die, but that's irrelevant to the film).

Suggested correction: JK Rowling has said that in order to be able to see thestrals the death has to "sink in" psychologically with the person. Which was her explanation for why he couldn't see thestrals even though he witnessed his mother's death. Given Harry's age and the way Quirrell died, it is possible that Quirrell's death didn't have enough of a psychological impact on him to "sink in." After I first personally witnessed a violent death, I didn't feel the impact until a few years later. It can take time.

Continuity mistake: In the opening aerial shot of the playground, the landscape surrounding it is flat, devoid of any shrubbery, and there are no buildings or streets nearby. In the close-up shots with Harry and Dudley that are shown from various angles, there are now houses, small hilly mounds, bushes, and a road in the background. (00:00:50)

Trivia: The barman seen with the goat at the shabby Hog's Head Inn where Harry and Hermione hold the first Dumbledore's Army meeting is Aberforth Dumbledore, Albus' brother. In the novels he runs the Hog's Head Inn and was investigated for performing improper magic on goats. (This was confirmed by J.K. Rowling in an online chat at The Leaky Cauldron.)

Revealing mistake: When the fruit from Jack's "kebob" lands next to him, they gently plop to the ground intact, despite having fallen from a great height. Although Jack also lands intact, his fall was cushioned by a number of obstacles - the multiple wooden bridges, the bamboo pole catching between the rocks, the unwinding rope, etc. With the exception of the pineapples, the already-damaged fruits (from being speared) are too thin-skinned or the rinds too brittle to have survived an impact from the height, speed, and angle shown. These are the SAME fruits (papayas, mangos, and melons) that easily splattered into pulp when thrown at Jack by the native women with far less force, a slower speed, and at a close range. (00:40:50)

Trivia: According to the film's writers, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott, in the DVD commentary, the ship captain that Mercer kills is named Hawkins. He is the father of Jim Hawkins from Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island." In that novel, Jim's father, a ship captain, disappeared without a trace. Rossio and Elliott decided to provide their own explanation as to what happened to him.

Question: Was any explanation given as to why Anna Maria (Zoe Saldana) was eliminated from the Black Pearl's crew and also from the movie series? Female pirates weren't uncommon. I'd like to know why Disney deleted this interesting character.

raywest

Chosen answer: Without asking Disney directly, we may not know, but Zoe Saldana has made many films since the first Pirates movie, generally playing one of the lead roles - the most likely explanation is that she chose to focus on those projects and thus was unable to find a gap in her schedule to play a relatively minor character in Dead Man's Chest.

Question: Why did Bootstrap Bill join the dice game that Will played with Davy Jones? Will knew that Jones had the key to the chest on him, so just how did Bootstrap help him by also playing?

raywest

Chosen answer: Bootstrap did not want his son to lose and have to become an undead. By joining the game, he made it possible to save Will if it looked like Will was losing, by placing a ridiculously high bet himself. And as we can see, this is what happened. When Will was losing, and Davy Jones was about to call him a liar, Bootstrap makes his absurdly high claim, thereby sacrificing himself, but getting Will out of the game debt-free.

Twotall

Answer: The jar was to put Davy Jones heart in. He can't touch dirt ever again since he failed to keep up his duties which means he wouldn't be able to get his heart back.

Chosen answer: Davy Jones cannot set foot on land for ten more years. The jar of dirt is to represent land. Jack carries it with him so that he always has land with him so Davy Jones won't be able to get near him, or so Jack is supposed to believe.

Answer: I think it was because of the offer that Larry made to Anna. He promised that if they had sex one more time, he would leave her alone and never contact her again. The fact that he was willing to give her freedom, is what made her choose him. Dan was more "needy" and pushy, which is hypocritical, because he left Alice based on her being needy.

Dan left Anna after confronting her about sleeping with Larry for the divorce papers. Anna begged Dan to not stop loving her, to not leave her. Looks like Dan could not stand Anna after she slept with Larry so she went back to Larry since she never turned in the divorce papers.

But after the incident, Dan went to Larry's office and begged him to "let" Anna return to him.

Answer: Because Larry loved her and she was a narcissistic object for Dan.

Chosen answer: Guilt. Dan tells Larry so when he confronts him in his office.

Question: Just after Dumbledore announces the Triwizard Challenge, there's a short scene where Igor Karkaroff slips into the deserted Great Hall where the Goblet of Fire is kept. It wasn't Igor who put Harry's name in the goblet, and Viktor Krum submitted his own entry. Obviously the audience was being led to believe that Igor may have been involved in the plot against Harry (he wasn't), but what was the real reason he went in there?

raywest

Answer: It was Barty Crouch Jr. He used the polyjuice potion to disguise himself as Igor. I believe he did this because he was originally labelled as a Death Eater. As a result, Igor was put on trial and before he was sentenced, Igor gave the Ministry Barty Jr's name, so then he was sent to Azkaban. For revenge, Barty Jr used to potion to disguise himself as Igor so if he was caught messing with the goblet, he would be questioned, due to his past (seeing as what happens at the end). That way, Barty would be remained undetected and could carry on fleeing the Ministry.

I like this answer best. It makes sense.

lionhead

Chosen answer: There is no reason. In the books this scene does not occur, so the idea behind putting it into the film is purely to mislead the audience.

Scrappy

Answer: Because Igor wanted Viktor to get into the tournament so he put Viktor's name in again so he could raise his chances of getting picked.

The Firm (1993)

Question: Storing incriminating mafia files in a "kitchen pantry" at the Firm's Cayman Island bungalow with nothing but a standard door and key lock (instead of a steel vault) to secure them seems risky, inept, and downright unbelievable. Is this how it happened in the book or was it changed for the movie?

raywest

Chosen answer: In the book there were indeed incriminating files stored in the firm's condos in the Cayman Islands. There were two adjoining condos, one for senior partners (where incriminating files were stored) and one for junior partners who weren't yet aware of the firm's organized crime connections.

Continuity mistake: When Harry returns from the cemetery, there's a shot of him lying over Cedric's body. When Dumbledore reaches out to put his hands on Harry's face, Harry's left shoulder is higher while he rests his weight on his right arm. General questions

Are there any new Star Trek movies or TV series in the works, or is the franchise officially dead?

Question: Why does the enchanted ceiling in the Great Hall begin acting weird when Mad Eye Moody (Crouch) makes his entrance during the beginning-of-the-year feast?

raywest

Chosen answer: The ceiling does not really start acting weirdly when Moody enters. The ceiling is enchanted to portray whatever the outside sky is doing, and, as it is stormy outside, it is therefore stormy on the ceiling. It is just a coincidence that just as Moody enters, there is a lightning strike, and he thinks that it is a curse or some other magic spell.

mandy gasson

Addendum: in the book, there's a big storm going on (outside), and Mad-Eye does not interact with the ceiling as he does in the movie. The lightning at the same time he comes in is a coincidence.

It's more about foreshadowing for the terrible events caused by fake Moody later in the movie.

Question: At the end of the film, how does the ship carrying the adult and the juvenile T-rexes get from San Diego back to the island off Costa Rica without a pilot and crew? It seems to just sail away on its own. Did I miss something?

raywest

Chosen answer: Once Sarah and Ian trap the T-rex back into the "cargo hold", we never see the ship sail away on its own. It couldn't do so. The ship crashed into the dock, it would have taken days for them to free the ship - plenty of time to get a new crew. Notice how when they are watching the TV at the end, how clean everyone is?

XIII

Chosen answer: It's suggested in the books that Yoda settled on Dagobah because of the Dark Side cave near his home. The presence of a nearby source of Dark Side energy effectively camouflaged his own presence, preventing the Emperor and Vader from locating him.

Tailkinker

Additionally, in the Clone Wars show Dagobah is where Yoda must travel to begin his force-ghost training with Qui Gon's disembodied spirit, which is presumably part of the reason he returns.

Question: When Obi-Wan is on Kamino, he reports to Yoda and Mace-Windu that Sifo-Dyas ordered the clones ten years ago. When he says he thought Sifo-Dyas died before that, Yoda and Mace-Windu give each other a puzzling look. Why does Obi-Wan think he died before this?

raywest

Chosen answer: Either because Sifo-Dyas DID die before this, and another party was simply using him as a cover in order to create the clone army, or else because he turned to the dark side (which the older masters know), but most Jedis were just told he died.

Trivia: During Hagrid's Care of Magical Creatures lesson, just before Harry approaches Buckbeak in the paddock Beaky has a 'potty accident.' Manure is seen dropping from his hindquarters and can be heard thudding onto the ground. This is computer generated— - the CGI artists were having a bit of fun and wanted to add a touch of realism.
