Fringe (2008)

The Same Old Story - S1-E2

Corrected entry: When Dr. Bishop is using the special camera to capture the images on the dead woman's retina, he tells everyone to put on their goggles to protect them from the flashes. Once they find the image they need, everyone takes off their goggles, yet the camera is still flashing, and there are no ill effects.

wizard_of_gore

Correction: Once they find the image they need, they are not looking directly at the flashes. It's like not looking directly at someone welding without wearing welding goggles. If you don't look directly at the welding flash, you don't have a problem, but can get retinal burn if you look directly at it unprotected.

Corrected entry: Leroy says to Fool, "Y'all are being evicted, you gotta be out tomorrow at midnight." California law (the movie was filmed in and thus presumably takes place in Los Angeles) requires landlords to give 30 days notice to evict. (00:03:40)

Correction: Couple things: They may have been given thirty days notice, and he was reminding them they had to be out by the next day midnight. Second, even though it is law, some landlords don't follow the law, depending on the likelihood that the evictees won't complain because they either don't know the law, or don't have the resources (especially in low rent districts) to fight for their rights.

XXX (2002)

Corrected entry: Towards the end of the film they resolve they must destroy the submarine and hence all of Prague to save the world - Why oh why does Samuel L. Jackson, and all the other executives, drive to the middle of the soon to be destroyed city? It seems a waste that such important people would be willing to die for no good reason, especially considering they had 30 minutes to get away and weren't even aware at first that Xander was actually on the sub. (01:49:45)

Correction: The weapon is supposed to be more powerful than a nuclear weapon. Thirty minutes to get out of the area wouldn't be enough to be safely out of the area. They are militarily trained and go to downtown in hopes of discovering some way to neutralize or destroy the sub. It's a pretty cowardly military person who would save their own skin before doing everything they can to protect civilians.

rswarrior

I don't agree with the correction. Thirty minutes would be plenty, with the kind of resources Gibbons has, since he has plenty of planes at his disposal, but more than that; the bad guys earlier detonate one of those rockets inside their own basement and cackle madly at death being unleashed through a security glass door. All it takes for Gibbons, or anyone really, to be 'safe' from that is lock yourself up somewhere, probably even your car with air recycling on and get the hell out of there. It seems awfully uncharacteristic of Gibbons and the other top brass to just stand there on the bridge (with no hazmat suits or anything, and they knew well in advance the nature of the weapon) and be cheerleaders. The entry should be at least a Stupidity (although then #320720 becomes a Duplicate entry).

Sammo

Corrected entry: A large number of the women in the movie, especially the "harlots" and "harem girls," have very obvious breast implants as evident through the shapes of their breasts. Not something available thousands of years ago, but it does fit with the spirit of the movie. (00:24:00)

J I Cohen

Correction: Since we can't see surgical scars, or the implants themselves, since the costumes aren't *that* revealing, we can't say for sure that implants were used. A woman in a harem would be picked for her beauty, and ideally-formed attributes, therefore, there could well be a preponderance of large breasted women in the harem.

Romeo + Juliet (1996)

Corrected entry: After shooting yourself at close range in the temple, there would either be a huge entrance wound (and not a few small drops of strategically placed blood) or a nasty exit wound, with Juliet's lovely brain splattered all over her true love's face.

Correction: It depends on a lot of factors. With a smaller caliber gun like that, the entrance wound could easily be small and relatively bloodless. A smaller caliber bullet could also easily hit the skull, and bounce around the brain pan without exiting.

Corrected entry: The Vikings are supposed to all speak the same language (which is one of the reasons Ahmed manages to learn it). They even refer to it when asking Ahmed "How did you learn our language?". The only problem is, they are NOT speaking the same language. The messenger boy and the old crone both speak modern-day Norwegian, the other 12 warriors speak a mixture of Danish, Swedish and made-up words that don't make sense. Buliwyf himself sounds strained and unnatural, as if he has learned his lines phonetically.

Twotall

Correction: The movie takes place in Medieval times, and pretty much all languages have changed over time. A mixture of Norwegian, Danish and Swedish would be typical for the time, as even English of the period used words from different languages, and is pretty much a completely different language compared to modern English.

rswarrior

That is simply not true. In medieval times the language of the Norsemen was not a mixture of present-day Scandinavian languages, but their common ancestor - Old Norse. As Latin is a common ancestor of Italian, Spanish, Romanian etc. so is Old Norse common ancestor of Swedish, Danish etc. So using Norwegian language in the movie is like making a movie about Ancient Roman Civil War and letting Caesar, Brutus and Marcus Antonius speak a mixture of Portuguese and Romanian.

Correction: The word "christ" or, in the original ancient Greek, kristos, was a title meaning anointed one, not a name. Prior to Jesus Christ, the word could apply to anyone considered anointed.

Limitless (2011)

Corrected entry: Given the "efficient" logical function of Eddie's brain, for some reason, his brain deduced it was "smarter" to borrow money from the Russian Mafia (higher interest) than the safer option of going to the bank. Also, given his reliability in being able to generate a substantial income, the bank would have had no trouble granting him a loan. He also then forgets to repay this loan to the mafia.

Correction: A bank doesn't grant a loan just because one can make a lot of money. It all depends on a person's previous credit history. I know of a guy who made $40000 a year, he began a job at $100000 a year, but after a year of work, he still couldn't get a mortgage because 4 years before, he'd had a bankruptcy.

Corrected entry: The kidnappers plan every detail in advance to avoid any traces. During the kidnapping they take great care to not leave any traces behind. But after getting the ransom, when they chain the hostage to the place of release, they touch the handcuffs and the bike lock with bare hands, leaving their finger prints all over the place.

Correction: Which often happens, and is one way criminals are caught. They have the ransom, and got careless once they got their goal.

Smart Guy (1997)

A Little Knowledge - S1-E6

Corrected entry: Yvette mentions that she got a job at a restaurant gutting chickens. She also mentions that she's getting $100 a week. If she were to work 40 hours a week, that would make her pay $2.50 an hour, which is so far below minimum wage it's unbelievable.

Knever

Correction: You're assuming she's working 40 hours a week. She may not be. She could be only working part time, and at 20 hours a week, that would be $5.15 an hour, or what the minimum wage was in Washington DC at that time. Also, some service industries, such as restaurants, were not required to pay minimum wage to employees with reasonable expectation of earning tips. In 2013, a server at a restaurant in the USA, who may receive tips, can earn as little as $2.13 an hour, as long as tips bring the wage up to or above $7.25 an hour. If a person makes more than $30 a month in tips, these minimum wages can apply. This is federal law, states can set their own rates.

The Day After (1983)

Corrected entry: When the air burst explodes over Kansas City, the Doc's and everyone else's cars quit running. Current data suggests that modern cars would most likely not be permanently affected by an EMP, and certainly the '69 Nova visible to the left, with its old points and condenser ignition would not be affected, although, perhaps the transistorized radio would be toast.

Correction: This movie is thirty years old at the time of the mistake submission. The movie producers and writers wrote the screenplay with what was considered common knowledge of the time. Since in the last thirty years further testing has shown an EMP will not affect cars the way it's depicted in the movie, it's not a mistake in the movie, as they can only depict what they knew at the time. This is like saying movies and cartoons from the 1960s which show flying cars set in the present day are all wrong, because as yet, flying cars aren't common.

The Eagle (2011)

Corrected entry: The inconsistency occurs in the scene where Marcus confronts and kills the chief of the Seal People, thus recapturing the Eagle. As he is about to kill the chief, he asks him where he got his father's ring. Up to that point, the only way Marcus could communicate with the British tribes was if Esca interpreted for him. This was indicated in the film by the fact that the Romans spoke English (representing Latin) and the Britons spoke another language, which was subtitled. So as the film sets it up, Marcus and the chief do not speak a common language. Yet in this instance, the chief apparently understands Marcus's question with no problems. And yet, when he gives his answer taunting Marcus about his father's cowardice, he speaks his own language (subtitled) which he knows Marcus does not speak. Indeed, we know Marcus did not understand what he said, as he asks Esca several times afterwards what the chief said about his father. So when did the chief suddenly become able to understand Marcus's language, and if he can actually speak it, why not reply in it when taunting him?

Correction: These are questions, not mistakes. But to answer them; the chief could understand Marcus' language, but not necessarily speak it. My ex wife is Russian, and while I can understand some of what she says when speaking Russian, I can't speak enough Russian myself to make myself understood. The chief could easily have learned the basics of Marcus' language from the other Romans who settled in the region.

Contraband (2012)

Corrected entry: In the scene where they are searching the last containers loaded, they open up a container loaded with Fresh Seafood, fish packed in ice. No way would this survive a container ship journey even a day long. Containers are not refrigerated.

Correction: That's weird.I used to haul frozen french fries over 500 miles to a port where they were sent to China and Japan. All on refrigerated containers. My bosses would have been surprised to know the reefer containers weren't refrigerated. Hence the name "reefer".

rswarrior

Corrected entry: Why did the T-850 hesitate to shoot the T-X with the grenade launcher before the T-X fatally shoots Brewster? There's no reason why he would hesitate after he shoots her with the automatic weapon since the T-X had already fallen, only to get back up slowly ready to attack again, especially when he already knows that Brewster is one of her targets. This could have been explained if he had been distracted, but he was not.

sidearmsalpha

Correction: This is a question, not a mistake. The answer is they're basically walking computers, and can only follow their programming. A computer only "knows" what its program is, and can't think for itself.

Shoot 'Em Up (2007)

Corrected entry: If a human fell from 30,000 feet and lands on the ground without being slowed down by a parachute or something, the body would splatter apart like a water balloon.

Friso94

Correction: People HAVE fallen from extremely high altitudes and lived. Vesna Vulovic, a stewardess, fell from 33000 feet, in the tail section of a plane, but not strapped into a seat. A WWII pilot survived a 22000 foot fall when his plane was shot down, and he lost consciousness before pulling his ripcord. There are other examples.

Superman (1978)

Corrected entry: When there is a big explosion at a plant during the earthquake, and Superman flies in to save the day, all he does to stop the explosions is pull down the toggle of a huge switch situated on the wall; if this is all that was needed to stop the explosions, then why didn't one of the workers do it, and save Superman the trouble of flying all the way out there to do something which one of the workers could have done easily.

Correction: Because the workers may not have been trained or told what the switch would do. At the coal processing plane I work at, the only people that touch the electrical panels and equipment are electricians. And they don't work 24/7.

Correction: Logos on the hood are often printed in reverse so that a driver ahead of the vehicle can read the logo in the mirror.
