Trivia: In the video that Halliday left behind after his death, you see floral arrangements around his coffin that are in the shape of the Star Trek's Federation symbol and one of the Enterprise. But the really cool thing is his coffin is actually a photon torpedo, exactly like Spock was put in after his death at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Complete with the blue Federation flag draped over the end of it. (00:08:05)

Trivia: After Wade introduces his own avatar, it shows a line of people waiting by a portal. Just before Tracer shows up to the portal, you can see Sonic the Hedgehog standing towards the back of the line tapping his foot in the famous idle animation from the original game where he would tap his foot impatiently if the player left him standing still for too long. Trivia: Sorrento goes into the Oasis to meet with I-R0k to get the artifact from him. When he emerges from the portal, there is a downed space craft in flames behind him. This is one of the alien space ships from the original 1953 War of the Worlds film. These ships known as "The Flying Machines" or "Tripods". (00:31:00)

Trivia: After Wade's punched by his Aunt's boyfriend, he's lying on his makeshift bed on top of the washing machine as he's thinking about what Art3mis had said to him about Halliday making rules. He leans forward and pulls his OASIS visor out of his backpack, and on it is the logo for the classic arcade game Joust. In the book of Ready Player One, the first challenge wasn't a race like in the movie, but rather having to beat a certain DnD character in a game of Joust to get the copper key. Wade was the first to be able to do so. (00:22:35)

Trivia: Just before asking the computer to locate his friend Aech, Wade as Parzival is walking along a bridge. Beside him you can see Hello Kitty with two of her friends, Badtemaru and Keroppi walking along with him. Hello Kitty can also be seen again once Parzival enters the Halliday Journals building the first time in the film sitting at a desk studying with someone else. In addition, there is also a Hello Kitty sticker on Art3mis' bike. (00:05:00 - 00:22:50)

Trivia: After Wade puts on the goggles to go into the OASIS, the scene goes through a tennis ball shaped planet of sports where some hang gliders swoop down from a ledge for the Hurricane Hang Gliding and into a hurricane. Immediately you can see Dorothy's house from Wizard of Oz fly by, reenacting it being lifted into the air by the tornado in that movie. (00:03:50)

Trivia: The car that Parzival uses in the race is the DeLorean, complete with all it's customization and advances, from the Back to the Future movies. Steven Spielberg, the director of Ready Player One, was also the Executive Producer of the Back to the Future trilogy with his company Amblin Entertainment. Spielberg only allowed the DeLorean to appear as a reference and tribute to BTTF director Robert Zemeckis, rather than himself. Despite Spielberg's overwhelming impact on pop culture throughout the decades, direct Spielberg references were rather deliberately omitted from "Ready Player One" by Spielberg himself. Ironically, he intended to include references to "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (Spielberg's second blockbuster after "Jaws"), but he couldn't negotiate a licensing agreement with Columbia Pictures and Warner Bros. As they are walking up to the Holy Hand Grenade in the shop, they walk between 4 different game themed item stands. On the right is Overwatch complete with a hologram of Tracer, and a stand for Dungeons and Dragons. On the left there is a stand for the Borderlands game series complete with the Claptrap robot. Trivia: Among the other races and cars in the Manhattan race, there is a red 1958 Plymouth Fury. This is the sentient car known as Christine from the horror film and book of the same name. The killer car is seen several times through out the race, with the best view of it being right after the race starts and Aech drives past the camera in her Bigfoot, with Christine right behind Aech. Trivia: While Parzival is showing off Aech's shrunken ships to Art3mis, there are some full ships in the background. One of which is Lone Star's RV from Spaceballs seen while Parzival is showing off the ships in the lunchbox. The clearest view of it is when Art3mis fixes Parzival's hair by the Iron Giant's legs. Trivia: In Aech's workshop, Art3mis quizzes Parzival about his knowledge of Jams Halliday, and she asks him what his favorite shooter is and who he likes playing as. The response is Goldeneye, which was the game that popularized the first person shooter as a genre on consoles. He states that Halliday's favorite character to play as was Odd Job, who is by far the most infamous character to play as in multiplayer on that game. Due to Odd Job's much shorter stature and build than the rest of the characters, it made it very difficult for the auto aim feature in the game to hit him. This gave anybody playing as Odd Job a very very unfair advantage. (00:18:15)

Trivia: After Parzival and Aech take Art3mis to Aech's workshop to fix her bike, she runs up to the torso of the Iron Giant that Aech is building that later plays a big part in the final battle of the movie. The Iron Giant is positioned and stored in the warehouse almost the same way as how in the Iron Giant movie when Dean placed pieces of junk on the Iron Giant and had him sit in his warehouse pretending to be art to trick the military into thinking he was a fake. Trivia: In the race, Art3mis gets side swiped by a Sixer and skids to a stop as they pass by a movie theater in the city. On the billboard for the theater it shows "Schwarzenegger Jack Slater III". This is a reference to the 1993 film Last Action Hero, where in it Schwarzenegger plays a movie character inside a movie known as the Jack Slater series with the film's protagonist, getting sucked inside the Jack Slater IV film with a magic ticket. The start of the film shows Danny going to see Jack Slater III and the billboard in Ready Player one is nearly identical to the one in the Last Action Hero movie except without the word "is" after Schwarzenegger. Plot hole: During the final battle, we see all the other players charging over the hill and running into battle. We later see that these are just players standing on the streets wearing VR visors. But unlike our hero who is dangling on wires (and used a treadmill earlier on)...nobody on the streets is using any such thing. Which means when they are charging or running, they would all be crashing into walls or any obstacles that get in their way. Certainly nothing like the film.

Suggested correction: How much you have to move in the real world depends on how much and what kind of haptic gear you're wearing. If you have a boot suit and an omnidirectional treadmill, for example, you do all your own walking, running, and jumping, because you have the space to do it and the haptics to respond to your movements. People with minimal gear-like those we see on the streets-might have only a visor and gloves, say, and they have to do all their "running", "fighting" etc. with signals from their hands. It's like if you don't have a joystick, you have to use the arrows on the keyboard.

I disagree with this. At one point during the big fight you see a group of players as Spartans running along the street, with visors on. They definitely would have run into a wall or other person at some point. I'm sure they were not the only ones. I'm sure it's possible to use something for movement control besides actual physical movements but that scene shows not everybody is using it and there should be a lot of accidents with people running into things and each other. At the start of the movie you see a mom climb upon her couch to imitate climbing up a rock in the game, physically imitating the movement. The lack of showing this disability for players on the streets might not be so big as to be a plot hole, but definitely a factual error.

lionhead

Here's a clip of the Spartans https://youtu.be/D_eZxSYRhco?t=1m36s that shows they are definitely moving in exactly the same way in the Oasis as they are in real life, so even though yes it would make perfect sense for there to be different control schemes depending on the level of technology a person has, the film appears to show that it's a one-to-one translation of movement regardless of practicality or safety.

Rosco

I don't think it's an issue. Note that several times in the movie people are also shown to be playing the game while just sitting down at a table. Case in point, the guy that dies on Planet Doom and then immediately jumps up from his work desk and tries to run to the window to jump out. He was sitting down but still playing in the PVP on planet doom. Same is true for right as Wade is telling that when you die all your money and everything you work for is gone. The scene shows Sho stabbing a person's avatar on Planet Doom that then shows the person who was playing that character falling out of a chair he was sitting in. With another person sitting across from him also in a chair.

Adding to this point, Sorento himself plays the game from a chair.

I think in the end we can all agree its a mistake in the movie but not as big as a plot hole. Some people running, some people sitting down whilst playing, could be a matter of taste, but the Spartans running across the street with a visor on is definitely not logical.

lionhead

I would agree that it seems the mistake only applies to them in particular as shown in the film. At least on that level.

The players have the ability to see the real world because the glasses of most people are transparent, Art3mis even looks at Sorrento approaching in IOI, which Wade even asks why she is looking in that direction if there is nothing there, so the players would not hit the wall when running.

Question: Why does Art3mis seem surprised that she can't finish the race past King Kong for the first Easter egg? Isn't it widespread knowledge by then that nobody can get past that point (which is why there's barely anyone trying to complete the hunt anymore)?

Rosco

Answer: If it's widely known then they wouldn't do the race. They keep on trying and getting to the point with King Kong is all they know, somehow getting past him this time. Artemis, when she saw the jump, thought she could do it this time, but after Parzival saves her and tells her it can't be done she realises he is probably right and she wouldn't have made it.
