The Shining picture

Question: Does Danny's ability to "shine" have any connection to Jack's insanity and the events that occur in the hotel?

Chosen answer: Effectively, Danny's shining is what brings the hotel to life. Because he has such an incredibly powerful shine about him, all these weird ghost things in the hotel are able to materialize and reveal themselves. These weird ghost things are always present to some degree, and those people with a small degree of shine get glimpses of them - like Dick Hallorann. (It's not quite made clear in the movie, but Dick saw the woman in room 237 in the book). However, Danny's shine is so great that he gives these forces enough life to appear to those without any shine, people like his father and mother. As it's the hotel that's slowly driving Jack crazy, and the hotel gets its power from Danny's shining, then I'd say there's definitely a connection between Jack's insanity and Danny's abilities. In the movie, it's not as clear as it is in the book, but Jack is effectively possessed by the hotel. He's not a flawed drunk with an anger problem who loses his mind because of isolation. He's a flawed drunk with an anger problem who's doing the best he can, until the forces of the hotel get inside his head and make him lose it.

If Danny's shining is what brings the hotel back to life, does this mean that all the previous "Jacks" had a son or daughter with the shining too?

Answer: The movie is really 2 parallel story-lines with history repeating itself. In 1920s Jack visited the same hotel with his wife and son, they got stuck there due to snow storm along with rest of hotel crew (which leaves early in a hurry in 1980s). The director has carefully changed background score on things which were not present in 1920s when Dick is showing the facilities to Danny and his mother (like food cold storage). In the 80's version, Danny, Jack and Dick are the ones who have the power to shine or see scenes from the past in the same place. But as Dick says, its like reading a book and has no physical presence in current world. Whenever Dick is talking to Danny, it happened exactly the same way in 1920s, except replace the secret of shining with the secret of cannibalism around the hotel. Jack's insanity is just a repeat of his past, in the 20's the job of being the butcher (of human flesh) got to his mind and he started behaving weird. In the hotel lobby, replace the sound of heavy typing on the long table with sharp knife falling on human flesh. Red carpet depicts the blood and body parts all around the floor in 20s.

Twilight picture

Question: When Edward and Bella were by the lockers at school, how come Edward couldn't read Bella?

Chosen answer: Edward is able to read anyone's mind "except" for Bella's, he cannot understand why and that confuses and frustrates him. Bella has some unknown ability to block any mental intrusion.

The Langoliers picture

Question: Is there a reason why when they're in the past they can't catch up with the present, but when they land a little into the future, the present can catch up with them? Are they not moving along on their own timeline? And if not, why are they not left in that moment and stand there to see the present come and go without taking them?

Chosen answer: Think of time as a gear with only one tooth, and think of them as a gear with only one notch. In the past, the one tooth has forever passed their notch and they'll never be carried along in the flow of time again. In the future, the tooth comes along, snags their notch, and they're back in the flow of time.

Scream picture

Question: Why did Billy and Stu want to kill Tatum? I've read that she said Stu was bad in bed, but when does she say this in the movie?

Chosen answer: They didn't have anything against Tatum specifically, her death was just necessary for their scary movie plan against Sidney. They also said that anyone who isn't a virgin dies in a scary movie, and we know Tatum wasn't a virgin.

Predator 2 picture

Question: What is the significance of the flintlock pistol the Elder Predator gives Danny Glover?

Chosen answer: It's a reference to the comic where a pirate and a predator became somewhat friendly. The gun was given to the elder predator by the pirate as a thank you gesture. The elder predator then some few hundred years later gave it to Glover as a congratulations.

The comic came out years later to give a back story to the pistol. The only significance of the pistol is to show how long the predators have been coming to Earth.

Van Helsing picture

Question: In the beginning of the film, where Dracula is talking to Viktor vonFrankenstein, he slams the chest shut and begins yelling at him. Before this, Viktor was looking over his shoulder and his attention immediately snaps back to Dracula, but he then turns once more to look behind him before staring at Dracula again, can someone explain why he looks over his shoulder a second time?

Chosen answer: During their conversation Dracula is able to move around the room without Viktor noticing it. Then Dracula is standing on top of the fireplace behind Viktor, that's why he turns his head the first time. When Dracula suddenly slams the chest Viktor is surprised to see Dracula suddenly standing in front of him so he instinctively turn his head to look at the fireplace to believe his own eyes.

Question: How does the movie really end? Are the family trapped in a snow globe for all eternity, or were they given a second chance and Krampus is just watching them?

Chosen answer: The ending is that they are all alive and Krampus gave them a second chance. Evidence of this comes from the director's commentary and the comic book prequel "Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas".

Saw (2004)

Saw picture

Question: How exactly was Adam supposed to win the game? We know the Doctor had to kill Adam before 6 to live, but how was Adam meant to get out? Was he there solely for the Doctor to kill or was there a way out for him that I've missed?

Chosen answer: Amanda was supposed to put the key around Adam's neck rather than just on his chest. If she had done so as instructed by Jigsaw, he would've been able to unlock his shackle and leave the bathroom. Adam was a voyeur, the irony being that if his key had been placed correctly around his neck, all he would've had to do would be to look around to find it. Adam's tape states, "what do voyeurs see when they look into the mirror, " so, again, it's a hint that all Adam would've had to do was look at himself. I noticed as well, Jigsaw says, "the key to that chain is in the bathtub." /IS/ in the bathtub. Not /was/. So Jigsaw probably thought Adam could still get out. He says, "so many people are ungrateful to be alive. But not you. Not anymore." So it's like, 'I have taught you this lesson, now you can go free because now you'll appreciate your life unlike you did before'.

Answer: Adam was never supposed to win, I don't recall which movie, I believe it be the 5th where John is talking to Amanda and says how her games were rigged and impossible to win, and Adam and Lawrence were part of Amanda's game.

Question: Here is something I really don't get. Near the end, Wendy and Kevin find out that Ian was supposed to cause Wendy's death somehow, but Ian would've already been dead. If Wendy hadn't intervened with Ian's original death, Ian wouldn't have been at the fair to cause Wendy's death. Can someone please explain this?

M0vi3

Chosen answer: This is REALLY tough to explain. Ian was NEVER supposed to cause Wendy's death. When Wendy looked at her shirt in the picture, she assumed that Ian was supposed to cause her death. Instead, Wendy was supposed to be crushed by the MCKINLEY sign, following the MCKINLEY shirt. Because Ian's death was skipped, he arrived at the fair, stopping Wendy from going under the sign, thus, skipping HER death. Also, the fireworks weren't supposed to kill Wendy while she laying on the ground, but to kill her while she was SUPPOSED to be under the sign. It was a coincidence that IAN showed up at the fair, and that he was under the sign, and had died. So, Ian was never gonna cause Wendy's death in the first place.

M0vi3

Answer: Well if you look at Ian's death picture he was suppose to be killed by a wood arrow. The sign was just like the flags in the picture. (With the same arrow tip shape). So Ian's death picture really wasn't wrong.

Aliens (1986)

Aliens picture

Question: If the company knew about the Aliens from the start and coveted them as a bioweapon, why did it take 57 years and the reappearance of Ripley for someone from the company to make another effort to get one? In the intervening 57 years, wouldn't the company have sent someone out to the derelict spaceship wreckage?

Chosen answer: The company doesn't wait 57 years, they built a colony on the planet over 20 years prior to finding Ripley. The company was apparently unaware of the exact location of the derelict spacecraft. After finding Ripley and obtaining information from her, Burke was able to send the Jorden family to the precise location of the derelict spacecraft.

Question: I know that the images in the tape represent things that happened to or around Samara, but what is the point of the nail going through someone's finger? I know they can't show every second of Samara's life so we might not see a connection, but that part of the tape really grossed me out and so I want to know if someone knows why it was put there, or was it just the gross-out factor?

troy fox

Chosen answer: Samara broke her finger nail clawing at the walls of the well... I guess that's why it's on the tape also.

Paul Plesser

Answer: In the movie Rings, the main girl gets her finger nail stabbed by a nail.

Orphan (2009)

Orphan picture

Question: Can someone verify the number of gunshots fired by Esther at the end of the film? I thought I counted 7 and I assume a revolver has only 6 bullets in the cylinder.

Chosen answer: The scene when Esther takes 4 bullets out of the gun and asks Max if she wants to play shows that the gun has a 5 bullet capacity. Esther fired 1 bullet at Kate's shoulder, 1 at a glass when Kate was on top of the glass roof and 3 other bullets at Max. At the end of the movie Max fires an extra bullet.

Alien (1979)

Alien picture

Question: What exactly is the space jockey and why haven't we seen it in the other films except its fossilized self sitting in the what I call the laser gun?

Chosen answer: It's another race of space alien that is also subject to infection by the Aliens. This particular one was infected and moved as far as it could from its race's known space and broadcast a warning before it died. The presence of eggs in the hold may indicate that it was a research ship. The race was never used in other Alien movies because it adds a new dynamic to the plotlines: two alien species, locked in mortal combat and neither particularly friendly with humans. In the Alien pseudo-prequel Prometheus we learn these beings are known as the Engineers and have interesting ties with both the aliens and humans as well.

Question: What is the meaning behind the Morton salt and other groceries that Mort buys at the end of the movie?

Chosen answer: Mort Rainey buys the salt, butter, and napkins for eating the corn he grew in the garden above Ted and Amy's graves. The "Morton" brand of salt uses the advertising slogan, "when it rains, it pours." Mort Rainey's name can be translated to "raining death." The "Vanity Fair" napkins could be a refernce to Mort's personality.

raywest Premium member

The term Vanity Fair was coined (I believe first) by John Bunyan in 1678, as a place in a story called ‘The Pilgrim's Progress'. Mort is referred to as ‘Pilgrim' by a few different characters in the film, including himself, without much explanation until the serviettes. Brilliant. Vanity Fair in John Bunyan's story is a never-ending fair of frivolity, which is similar to Mort's charade of denial. Found this info when I searched the meaning of Vanity Fair on vocabulary.com.

Final Destination 5 picture

Question: Bludworth states that he's, "Seen this before" referring to Death's Design. If the bridge incident takes place before Flight 180, and is the first, then how would he have seen it before? And why is the bridge incident not mentioned in the first film if it took place only two weeks earlier?

Chosen answer: To answer your first question, Bludworth does in fact mention he has "seen this before", but this means he could have seen these events before the film series ever took place. It is possible that this is where he had learned a lot about death's design. This could even hint at another sequel/prequel. To answer your second question, none of the survivors had been alive to tell the tale of what happened to the survivors of the bridge collapse. In the first few movies, it is noted that the protagonist freaks out, thus, startling MANY people. In the 5th film, Sam is only seen freaking out inside the bus. Even if the FBI have the information, they could have finished the investigation completely, due to Sam, Molly, and Nathan surviving (Until the end of the movie, that is).

Question: How could Brahms speak with a child's voice? He must be 28 years old. Don't you think that the voice sounded too much like a little boy for a man to mimic?

Bunch Son

New this month Answer: First, the other answer stating his voice box was damaged by the fire is pure conjecture, and also isn't supported by the fact we hear Brahms speaking with an adult voice at one point in the climax. But to answer the original question, it's really not that hard for an adult to mimic a child's voice. Heck, voice actors do it all the time. Presuming that he's been stuck in the walls since the fire when he was a boy, he probably is used to speaking and acting like an overgrown child much of the time as he never really "grew up" mentally (as evidenced by his clumsy body language and attitude), only slipping into his "adult voice" when he becomes overtly irate or loses control.

TedStixon

Chosen answer: His voice box was damaged in the fire making his voice sound like that.

Saw V (2008)

Saw V picture

Question: I was wondering why the man and woman in the last trap didn't use the woman from the bathtub to give the pints of blood? They could have carried her into the room because the door stayed open for about forty seconds.

Michelle Ferris

Chosen answer: Assuming the woman in the bathtub was able to be moved safely the amount of blood gained from her, while still being helpful, would probably not be enough to save the final two survivors from self harm. Without the heart pumping blood you would only get the blood that was in her arm at the moment. You would have to lift her or raise her so gravity would get other blood moving to get enough. Which the final two possibly could have done, but stress of the situation clouded their judgement.

Jurassic Park III picture

Question: How does Ben Hildebrand die? Only his skeleton is shown in while Billie removes the parasail. He would not have been killed and eaten by a dinosaur because his skeletal remains are still there, and he wouldn't have been strangulated as he was talking to Eric as per the video.

Chosen answer: While the movie doesn't explain this, it most certainly wasn't a dinosaur (since a carnivorous dinosaur would eat him). However, in Jurassic Park Adventures: Survivor, he dies from internal injuries due to the rough "landing".

Bishop73

Answer: Raptors.

New this month Answer: Compisigthus or compies would have done the trick.

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane picture

Question: ***SPOILER WARNING*** I don't understanding the ending to this film. What was Mandy's reason for killing people? Is this a flawed character motivation, or did I miss something?

Chosen answer: The reason for Mandy and Emmett killing off the characters is pretty much left open for interpretation, but it seems the reason they killed them was because before Mandy became "hot over the summer" (as Dylan says at the beginning), Emmett and Mandy were treated like outcasts, and after Dylan's death, Emmett probably took a lot of the blame. It's possible that Emmett and Mandy were tired of how the popular crowd had treated them before. At the end, they made a pact to kill themselves. But after finding out that Emmett is just like the others, Mandy backs out and decides not to, but Emmett doesn't take it very well and decides to kill her too. Mandy fights him off, and she saves Garth, who seems to be the only one at the ranch who saw her as a human being and treated her with respect. So any of these reasons may have been motivation (although their actions are extreme), but overall there seems to be no obvious reason.

Question: Wouldn't Burt and his wife get in trouble for having all the weapons in their house? Even in later movies, there is no sign they got in trouble and Burt continued to have all these big weapons on hand.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: No, there's nothing illegal about any of the weapons they owned. Some of them may have required a Class 3 firearms license, but even this is not difficult (just expensive) for a law-abiding citizen to obtain.
