Best comedy movie questions of all time

Napoleon Dynamite picture

Question: Why does Napoleon, who appears to be a junior or senior in high school, ride the bus with a bunch of little kids?

Chosen answer: Because it is such a small town that the school system can not afford buses for grade level so they have to share them, plus it has comedic value as well.

Shrek 2 picture

Question: Since Shrek and Fiona were both turned in to humans by the Happily Ever After Potion and Donkey is turned in to Stallion, does anyone have an idea as to what Dragon would have become since she is Donkey's True Love?

Chosen answer: It was confirmed by the filmmakers that Dragon is actually Donkey's true love, and that when Donkey was a stallion she changed as well, supposedly into a talking pegasus.

The Thomas Crown Affair picture

Question: How does he fold the Monet in half to fit into the briefcase? Originally I thought he'd separated it from the wooden frame (ie. just a canvas), but when he takes it out back at his house he holds it up, and the wooden frame's still in one piece. Also, surely folding it in half would crack the paint, but despite the painting being twice the width of the briefcase (it fits snugly when the case is open), he then shuts the case down to a "normal" size. Any ideas?

Chosen answer: The only explanation I can come up with is that the inner part of the frame is precut. With the frame cut that way it would allow the picture to fold, but when unfolded it would be fairly rigid with the exception of bending it forward at that point. When he pulls the painting out, it still holds the square shape of the frame. Best I can come up with.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End picture

Question: Can anyone explain why Calypso caused the maelstrom to appear? Other than provide really cool visual effects for the movie, it didn't serve a purpose. I would have thought she'd do something against Davy Jones and/or his ship in particular for betraying her in the first place.

Chosen answer: It's suggested that, as she's pretty much equally annoyed at the pirates (for originally imprisoning her, even if it wasn't specifically those pirates) and at Davy Jones (for showing them how to do it), that she creates the maelstrom to make it an even fight - effectively telling them that she no longer cares for either side. The conditions within the maelstrom hamper the Black Pearl, the turbulence making it difficult to bring her superior speed into play, but the angle and extremely damp conditions also make it harder for the Flying Dutchman to bring her superior firepower to bear.

Tailkinker

Wrong. As the Black Pearl was meant for speed, she would have a lighter weight than the Dutchman, and would require a pushing force to stay even. Furthermore, she was not hampered by the wind-she was aided, as Gibbs stated, "The wind's on our side, boys!"

Mean Girls picture

Question: Why did the coach act so paranoid about safe sex if he was actually sleeping with a student?

Chosen answer: Precisely because he was sleeping with a student. Getting her pregnant would bring their affair out into the open and create a scandal for the whole nation to know what he was up to. Therefore safe sex was really important to him.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest picture

Question: When Jack asks for Tia Dalma's help, she asks him what he brought for her. Jack then lifts the cage containing the monkey and shoots it. Jack then says, "An undead monkey". How is it possible for the monkey to be undead, wasn't the curse on the Black Pearl lifted?

Chosen answer: There is a scene after the credits of "The Curse of the Black Pearl": the monkey got back to the cave and took a coin. That way he turned undead again.

Back to the Future picture

Question: What does the saying "Why don't you make like a tree, and get out of here", mean?

Chosen answer: It's a way of saying "scram" or "get lost." But Biff is so dim, he doesn't realize he's saying it wrong; the expression is "make like a tree and leaf", with the joke being that "leaf" is meant to sound like "leave."

Elf (2003)

Elf picture

Question: When The Central Park Rangers are called in action it mentions the Simon and Garfunkel concert and their actions being under speculation - was this a real event (their questionable actions), and if so what was the problem, or was it just a fictional jokey reference?

Chosen answer: This was a real event. The Simon and Garfunkel free concert drew a crowd of over half a million people and the Central Park Rangers were investigated for being a little "over-enthusiastic" in their methods of crowd control. It was 1981 though, not 1985 as stated.

Krampus picture

Question: How does the movie really end? Are the family trapped in a snow globe for all eternity, or were they given a second chance and Krampus is just watching them?

Chosen answer: The ending is that they are all alive and Krampus gave them a second chance. Evidence of this comes from the director's commentary and the comic book prequel "Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas".

Forever Young picture

Question: Would the labels on the Budweiser bottles be the same in the older era during the beginning of the movie, as it is in the latter part of the movie (1994)?

Chosen answer: The color and design of the label hasn't changed in decades, although the script on it has changed some over time. They all look almost identical from a distance.

Rush Hour 2 picture

Question: What does Hu Li say in Chinese near the end, when she is holding the bomb that is about to blow up?

Chosen answer: She says 'we'll go together, inspector'.

Meet the Fockers picture

Question: I probably missed this, but why does Dina keep saying, "muskrat" to Jack?

Chosen answer: Muskrat is a "code word" they use to remind Jack to keep his temper under control.

Toy Story picture

Question: When Woody and Buzz are at Sid's house, at one point the baby with the spider legs taps something in Morse code to Sid's other toys. Is he really tapping something in Morse code or is it just a random jumble of dots and dashes?

Chosen answer: Baby face taps RR TOYS COME OUT. Telling the other toys to come out from hiding. Pixar stated this in their Toy Story character overview.

Monsters, Inc. picture

Question: At the end of the movie, Fungus is seen amongst the employees promoting doing fun stuff, but since he is seen assisting Randall, and generally helping him and Waternoose with the scream machine earlier on, shouldn't he have been banished (like Randall) or hauled off by the CDA (like Waternoose) when the whole plan came to the CDA's attention?

Chosen answer: Fungus was an unwilling lackey, not a co-conspirator.

Question: When the lawyer told Nici that Mr. B. "already knew" she wasn't Lilly's granddaughter, did he know from the first day they showed up or from the day the lawyer came over to tell Mr. B. about what his nephew said about Mickey and Nici?

Chosen answer: He knew right away, because he knew that Lily didn't have any children, so Nici and Mickey could not be Lily's granddaughters.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl picture

Question: After Elizabeth is brought to the Pearl, she threatens to drop the medallion overboard. Barbossa feigns disinterest but when Elizabeth pretends to drop it, the pirates gasp in panic. Why? So she drops it, big deal. They can't drown, the gold "calls to them" so what does it matter if she were to drop it?

Jacordx

Chosen answer: Because they'd have to find it. The gold may "call to them", but it obviously doesn't function as a millimetre perfect homing beacon or they'd never have missed the medallion years earlier when they attacked the ship carrying the young Will. Elizabeth drops it into the sea and they're going to have to spend what could be months trying to locate it - currents could take it well away from the dropping point. They've found the final missing piece; they're potentially just hours away from finally being cured. The last thing they want is to see it thrown into the sea.

Mamma Mia! picture

Question: So did they really get married to play 'happy families'? Because when Sophie says 'I don't know which is my dad and I don't care, Sky let's not get married' it sounds a bit like they are playing 'happy families'.

Shadow5

Chosen answer: Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan got married because they loved each other and had done for many years. The daughter changed her mind about getting married because she realised what really mattered to her and that seeing the world while they were young and free wasn't such a bad idea after all, that she didn't need to get married and hang around for her mother's sake.

The Devil Wears Prada picture

Question: Can anyone please explain to me the deal about Nigel not getting a job in Paris? He thought he got promoted then Miranda picked someone else or something and he says something like 'when the time is right, she'll pay me back'.I've seen this film loads of times but I've never fully understood what happened. Thanks.

Katie..x

Chosen answer: Miranda was going to be replaced by Jaqueline and forced to retire. Miranda worked a deal to give Nigel's new job to Jaqueline instead. Since Jaqueline now has a job she wants, there is no one eager or qualified to replace Miranda. Miranda keeps her job. Nigel doesn't get a new job and must remain with Miranda. Miranda gets what she wants, Jaqueline gets what she wants, Nigel gets screwed, but maintains the (most likely futile) hope that Miranda will pay him back by some other means in due course.

Question: What car does Kat drive?

Chosen answer: A 1964 Dodge Dart.

Wayne's World picture

Question: During one scene in the Mirthmobile, Wayne pulls up alongside another driver, winds down the window and says "Pardon me, do you have any gray poopah?" and then begins to laugh. What's he talking about?

Chosen answer: There was a series of commercials for a mustard called Grey Poupon in the late 80s and early 90s. It usually involved someone driving up next to a limo in a cheaper car, rolling their window down and asking them "pardon me sir, do you have any Grey Poupon?". Then the richer man in the limo would say "certainly" and pass it to the guy in the other car. They were incredibly stupid commercials and wayne's world makes fun of them.

Question: At one point, Melanie mentions that Jake got her pregnant several years ago. Was the baby stillborn or did she get an abortion?

Chosen answer: She had a miscarriage.

Tangled picture

Question: In the scene of Mother Gothel stabbing Eugene, is it possible for him to die that fast from that wound?

Chosen answer: All she had to do was nick the right blood vessel, and he could have died much sooner. So, yes, it's possible for him to have died that fast. We have to assume the lack of blood was just Disney toning things down and not representative of the actual severity of the wound. If appearances counted for anything at all in the world of Disney, there'd be no such thing as a mortal wound.

There's Something About Mary picture

Question: During the end credits its says "Dedicated to Ryan Mone." Who was and what happened to this man ?

Chosen answer: Ryan Mone was a young hockey player from Martha's Vineyard, who died in a car accident at the age of just seventeen. The Farrelly brothers are long-term friends of the Mone family and chose to dedicate their film to Ryan as their tribute to his memory.

Smokey and the Bandit picture

Question: What did the trooper mean when he said, "Didn't you know this ain't Saturday"? It always makes me wonder.

Chosen answer: The trooper on the motorcycle had just landed in the water. In older days, the typical day to take a bath, wash hair, etc. was Saturday. The trooper in the car (once he saw the motorcycle trooper was okay and wet) just made a joke about him taking a bath.

Zwn Annwn

He was making a reference to the fact that on the weekend, people like to go off roading and have a good time on motorcycles, 4 wheelers, etc.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation picture

Question: What is the name of the Christmas Tree farm they went to to get their tree?

Chosen answer: They didn't go to a Christmas tree farm. He took them to a huge forest to get one most likely because it would be easier to get one free then to pay for one.

They went to a tree farm. After running off the road and jumping the snowbank the wagon crashes through a sign that says "Trees." Clark then says, "We're here...and we made good time too." The humor is Clark forgoes a normal "farmed" tree for the "wild" monster he takes home.

Answer: They never went to a tree farm. Even though there is a sign that says "Trees", there is no employee there to greet them or even discuss how much the tress cost. Plus, trees on a tree farm are usually smaller and are always lined up in a row. The trees seen by the Griswold's are extremely large and are scattered about like what would be seen in a regular forest which is where they went.

Dogma (1999)

Dogma picture

Question: Why is it that The Metatron, Bartleby, and Loki all refer to God as "He" when God actually turns out to be a woman? The Metatron even says "her" and "she" to Bethany, in reference to God, in a very patronizing manner, as if she's holding on to an incorrect belief.

Chosen answer: Metatron explains at the very end that God has no gender, and can appear on Earth as a man or a woman. Metatron's patronizing tone is indicating that there are far more important matters afoot than which gender noun to use to describe God.

Moose
Hancock picture

Question: Bullets can't penetrate him, he can't even shave with a razor (has to use his fingernails), yet he can get drunk. How?

Chosen answer: Because the two are not even close to being related. Being bulletproof and being able to digest food\water\liquor are completely different.

Rlvlk

Chosen answer: It is set up in the previous scenes when the Ocean's crew listens to the tape finding out the NightFox hired Matsui to hire Danny Ocean. Matsui, being friends with Danny Ocean probably had no idea it was a set up. Most likely, Lahiri, putting most of what happened together in the aftermath of the robbery of the stock certificate in the previous scenes, told Matsui that he set up the Ocean's crew unknowingly. This seems the likely connection to the scene.

The Parent Trap picture

Question: In the scene where the dad tells Annie, pretending to be Hallie, that he is going to marry Meredith, Hallie yells a bunch of stuff in French. Does anyone know what she was saying?

Chosen answer: I hope that you are joking, Meredith is not the girl for you. But it is possible that I am dreaming that this is so.

Stephen Edmonds 1
Love Actually picture

Question: Does Kiera Nightly's character ever split up with her husband and go to his best friend? They show her with the husband at the end of the movie, but it seemed to me that she really loved the best friend. I was sure she would choose him over her husband.

Chosen answer: No, Keira Knightley's character is not in love with the best friend; her kiss is one of compassion and affection, not love. Richard Curtis mentions this on the DVD commentary - he says something about Juliet being the sort of girl who would be used to men falling for her and treating them gently and kindly, which is what she does here.
