Continuity mistake: In his office, Lauren Bacall talks about Carmen to Marlowe and says, "She was asleep when I left" and her hands are in her lap. In the next shot her left hand is scratching her knee. (00:34:05)

Continuity mistake: As Marlowe walks back into Geiger's store the second time the secretary opens up a book with her left hand and proceeds to insert a piece of paper into it with her right. In the next shot the book is closed. (00:37:50)

Continuity mistake: Marlowe goes home after snooping around Geiger's house and we see the number 206 on his door with the words "Philip Marlowe, Private Investigator" underneath. Later when Inspector Bernie Ohls knocks on the door we see only the number 206 on it as Marlowe opens it. (00:29:20)

Continuity mistake: As she sits on his desk talking about Carmen, Marlowe says to Lauren Bacall, "Go ahead and scratch". The picture of Carmen is in his right hand but in the next shot both the picture and the envelope are in both hands. (00:34:10)

Continuity mistake: The next morning after going to Lido Pier, Marlowe walks into the waiting room of his office and Lauren Bacall is sitting there reading a magazine as she waits for him. The lighting on her changes and the picture on the wall behind her head is lowered about six inches between shots. (00:32:20)

Continuity mistake: Marlowe sits in his apartment and tries to figure out the code in Geiger's notebook. On his desk the note pad next to his ash tray disappears when Inspector Bernie Ohls knocks at the door at two in the morning. (00:29:25)

Continuity mistake: Even though no one goes near them, the jar and the statue of a horse on Marlowe's desk move between shots as Lauren Bacall sits down on it while speaking to him about Carmen. (00:33:05)

Continuity mistake: After taking Carmen Sternwood to her bedroom, Norris the Sternwood's butler helps Marlowe put on his over coat as he prepares to leave. Marlowe wasn't wearing it when he came into the house though and there's no indication that he had it in Carmen's car because when they left Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house he didn't have it on. Continuity mistake: No one touches his legs but Arthur Gwynn Geiger's dead body is not in the same position on the floor the second time we see it. The first time both of his legs are on the floor but the second time his left leg is over his right. (00:22:00 - 00:24:55)

Continuity mistake: Marlowe puts Carmen Sternwood to bed and the folds in the curtains behind the left of her head board move and are arranged differently between shots. (00:25:50)

Continuity mistake: In Geiger's house when Marlowe finds the hidden camera, we see a vase on the left of the fireplace and it's shadow falls directly behind it. Marlowe doesn't touch any light switches but later in the scene the lighting has changed and the shadow of the vase is now falling to the right of it. (00:22:45 - 00:23:35)

Continuity mistake: The shades on the window that Marlowe kicks open to enter Geiger's house are a little less than one foot apart as he puts Carmen Sternwood onto the sofa. The next time we see them they're wide open even though no one has gone near them. (00:23:40)

Continuity mistake: As Marlowe puts Carmen Sternwood onto Geiger's sofa there's a coat on the left arm rest. When he came into the room it wasn't there. (00:23:45)

Continuity mistake: Before Marlowe throws Carmen Sternwood onto Arthur Gwynn Geiger's sofa we see a close-up of his coat which is wet from the rain. Two shots later he takes out the camera hidden in the hollow sculpture and his coat is dry. (00:23:15)

Continuity mistake: Marlowe turns the page of Arthur Gwynn Geiger's diary and two pages on the left are sticking up. In the next shot all the pages are flattened out. (00:24:20)

Continuity mistake: Marlowe talks to Norris the Sternwood's butler at the front door and as he gets ready to leave he turns up his collar. In the next shot he turns up his collar again as he walks away (1945 Version on DVD). (00:27:45)

Continuity mistake: Marlowe goes into Geiger's house again to snoop around and he finds that Geiger's dead body has been removed. As he stands over the spot where the body was his shadow falls right on the bloodspot. In the next shot of him kneeling down and touching the blood stained carpet there's no shadow. (00:28:00)
