The Ring

New this month Question: Aiden says that Katie knew about and talked to him about her death. However, Katie didn't know she was going to die, because she thought the video was a prank. Katie seemed like quite a nervous person/conspiracist, so by her nonchalant conversations in the first scene, it's clear she wasn't fearing her death, so how did she and Aiden talk about her death if she didn't truly realise she was going to die until the 20 minutes or so before?

Question: At the beginning of the movie, whenever Katie is standing in front the fridge, what does she hear whenever she looks in the hallway and heads upstairs? It seems as though she hears something that makes her head that way, but what?

New this month Question: If the tape was made when the teenagers tried recording a football game over the well (the main theory), then wouldn't that mean that the four teens are the first people to watch/die from it? If so, how does Becca know about the myth of this deadly tape virus and phone call before Katie dies?

New this month Answer: The theory is wrong. The tape was already there.

MasterOfAll

Question: It is understood that before you die, you see the ring. Noah's coffee cup makes a ring, and Rachel sees the lid of the well before she's supposed to die. But does Katie see anything ring-shaped in the beginning?

Chosen answer: The television activates itself just as Katie is putting the glass to her lips - from her point of view, the rim of the glass would form a ring that filled her entire vision.

Slave

Question: When we see the tape, the very last image is of the well. When we see Rachel and Noah watching the tape, all they see at the end is the well, but when Aiden watches it Samara's arm starts to come out of the well. Why does she start to come out for Aiden immediately, but not Rachel and Noah?

Chosen answer: Samara begins crawling out of the well in an earlier scene to show the progression of the curse. Probably, if Rachael had watched the tape on the sixth day of her curse, she'd have seen Samara crawl completely out of the well and then be cut off. We are seeing the case from Rachael's point of view; likely, Aiden did not see the last part of that scene because his curse had just begun.

Question: I know that the images in the tape represent things that happened to or around Samara, but what is the point of the nail going through someone's finger? I know they can't show every second of Samara's life so we might not see a connection, but that part of the tape really grossed me out and so I want to know if someone knows why it was put there, or was it just the gross-out factor?

troy fox

Chosen answer: Samara broke her finger nail clawing at the walls of the well... I guess that's why it's on the tape also.

Paul Plesser

Question: When does Rachel realise if she shows the film to someone else she won't die? And if she knew, is that why she showed it to Noah, to kill him on purpose?

Chosen answer: Rachel doesn't know that showing the film to someone else will cause you not to die until death skips her. She remembers that Samara wanted to be "heard". She never meant to kill Noah.

Ginger Painter

Question: What did the hair covering Samara's face actually mean?

Chosen answer: I think partly the hair was used to add to Samara's overall creepiness and conceal her 'scary' face until the close-up just before Noah dies. But also the Sadako/Samara characters of the Ringu/Ring story seem to be based on a kind of Japanese ghost which were said to be the restless ghosts of wronged females who died tragic or untimely deaths, and traditionally they are thought to appear as figures in white dresses with their dark hair worn covering their face.

Question: What is it that brings about a nosebleed? Rachael, Noah and Aidan all get them, but at times when they don't seem to be doing anything at all related to what the other characters were doing when they got theirs.

Chosen answer: It's just a sign of the impending doom facing each of them.

wolfchild

Question: How much of the cursed tape do you have to watch to become cursed with the "seven days" threat? All of it? Or would even seeing two seconds of it Affect you?

Hamster

Chosen answer: Since the girl in the second movie lived because she covered her eyes, you'd have to watch the whole thing.

DirrtyGrrl

Question: Why can't the video just be passed to inmates on death row?

Chosen answer: Who says it can't?

MasterOfAll

Question: What exactly did Samara do so wrong in the first place that they had to put her in the barn? I know she made the horses die later because she was annoyed with them, but that really isn't a reason to kill a child. They just say that she wasn't right, but what wasn't right about her?

bpospech

Chosen answer: Samara (Daveigh Chase) has a number of supernatural abilities, but her signature ability is psychic photography. Samara sees and takes various images in her mind and projects or burns them onto objects and minds. After the Morgans brought their adopted daughter home, tragedy befell the Morgan ranch. Anna Morgan (Shannon Cochran) soon complained about gruesome visions that only happened when Samara was around, so both were sent to a mental institution. When they returned, Richard Morgan (Brian Cox), put Samara in the barn to keep her away from him and his wife because she was evil. Samara realized her parents loved the horses more than they loved her so she used her powers to drive the horses to insanity. This caused Anna to become depressed, kill Samara because she caused bad things and thought that killing her would stop the bad things from happening, and then commit suicide.

Question: All Samara wanted was to be heard and she killed anyone who didn't make a copy and show to someone else. Obviously she was very capable of killing before Rachel and Noah found her body and found out what had happened to her. So why does Aidan say that it's bad that they found her? How does it matter since she could kill before too?

Chosen answer: Aidan said to Rachel that they weren't supposed to *help* Samara. When she told him they had, he assumed that worse things were going to happen. He wasn't entirely wrong; the problem didn't go away, but Rachel finding Samara's body and learning the rest of her story didn't make things any worse. If anything it enabled her to understand why she escaped death.

Question: In the tape, we see some fingers in a box and something white running down a black screen (a comb through the hair maybe?), but what is the relevance of this to Samara?

Chosen answer: Seven fingers in the box represents the seven days she was alive in the well. The hair combing represents Samara's view of the world, since her hair always covered her face.

Question: If Rachel is already safe because she copied the tape, why does she still get all the symptoms that the other doomed victims do?

Chosen answer: The main point to remember is, Samara wants to tell her story. Yes, by copying the tape, Rachel's s letting other people know of Samara's story, but the symptoms are probably still there as an extra mean for Samara to show her what she went through. I think this shows that the curse is in full effect for the whole time, and that the copying only prevents the final outcome.

Sereenie

Question: During the scene when Naomi Watts allows her ex boyfriend to watch the video for the first time, she wanders out to her apartment balcony. She observes several neighbors in the apartments surrounding her. At this point the music becomes intense - is there a hidden message or hint that we are supposed to see here?

Sharon Murray

Chosen answer: The Samara virus is transferred through the televison. See how the televisions are on in each of the apartments? This is a bit of forshadowing to the end where Rachael realizes that the only way to avoid death is to make a copy of the tape and show it to someone else.

Timothy Cheseborough

Question: Rachael made a copy of the videotape that kills people and gives it to Noah to watch. That means there are now two killer videotapes. Even though at the end of the film when she destroys the original, why didn't she destroy the copy that she made? With both tapes destroyed there would be no way for Samara to come back and kill more people. Granted Rachael still would have been killed, but she would also be saving a lot of lives.

Chosen answer: Rachel is safe, since she has passed the tape on, but Aiden now needs to pass it on. If Rachel destroyed both copies, Aiden would have no way to do this, and would die. Also, based on background material, doing this wouldn't stop Samara: she can regenerate the video, either the same way the original one was created, OR at any point when somebody who has previously passed the tape on appears on a video camera.

Moose

Question: How come Rachel doesn't die, but Noah does?

Chosen answer: She makes a copy of the tape and shows it to someone else within the seven days. This is the only way to avoid dying.

Kara

Question: I'm sorry if I'm too vague on locating the scene, but when we see Samara sitting with her hands on her knees in the chair in the blank room, why is there a plug right by her feet?

Chosen answer: They're monitoring her vitals.

Question: If I've seen it correctly, you are supposed to save if you made a copy of the tape. But what would happen if you watch the tape again, do you have to make another copy then to prevent her coming out of the television?

Chosen answer: No. The main character watches the tape several times looking for clues to solve the mystery, but only makes one copy and is still spared.

Phixius

Question: What does Samara mean when she says on the tape "Daddy doesn't know"? Daddy doesn't know what?

Jeanne Perrotta

Chosen answer: She says "Daddy loves the horses...but he doesn't know" meaning she knows what's about to happen to all his horses. (Because she makes them commit suicide).

Question: How was Samara able to see her mother jump off of the cliff and secure that image on the tape if she was killed before her mom committed suicide?

apple

Chosen answer: One may as well ask, how did she manage to secure any of the odd images on the tape? Her spirit lived on, up to and beyond her mother's suicide, even though she had died. It was the power of her evil/angry spirit that created the tape and all its imagery.

Rooster of Doom

Question: What is the name of the song Samara sings? Is there really a musical carousel figurine like the one in the barn that plays it?

Chosen answer: The song was written by Hans Zimmer for the movie.

Question: What would happen if the people who watched the tape didn't answer the phone call and did not have an answering machine? Or if someone were to watch the video in a room or house with no phones. Would you still be killed in 7 days?

Josh Appelbaum

Chosen answer: Probably. The phone calls just make those last days more terrifying, and Samara can come out from any reflective surface. I don't think it would be possible to eliminate ALL reflective surfaces, just think about it: utensils, waxed floors, eyeglasses, anything metallic, even buttons.

Sereenie

Question: After carefully reading all the mistakes and corrections written here, there's still something that bothers me: The Morgans lived on an island and yet Samara was killed in the shelter inn. So far so good. The question is: how did The Morgans find a lid for the well during this vacation (since the lid was nowhere to be seen during the shoving scene) and if so, how can they cover up a well in somebody else's property, and after solving that, there still remains a question of how come nobody noticed the little girl was missing (the inn keeper, the other people on vacation etc.) and how come a cabin was built around the well so conveniently. All the explanations don't fit. Something's still missing.

Chosen answer: There's no reason to believe the inn was there before they dumped her in the well. In fact, all shots of the well at the time show no cabins or buildings anywhere. Most likely the inn was built on top of the area, probably even by the Morgans, in order to cover up the fact that they'd dumped a little girl in that well. Also, most of the people on the island, such as Samara and Anna's doctor, believed Samara was still staying at Eola County Psychiatric Hospital on the mainland. The doctor told Rachel that ever since Samara left, everything was better, so its likely the residents didn't care or give much thought to where she was, just relieved that she was finally gone and life on the island improved.

Question: The last person to take out the tape is Samera's father, Robert. Did he mix up the images on the tape, or did she put them on there in that order? Also, if he knew about the tape (clearly he didn't want to watch it) perhaps he watched it once and gave it to his wife so committed suicide and he lived, leaving the tape at the inn.

Chosen answer: She put them on there. It never says anything about the father doing it, but it does say Samara used her powers to burn the images onto it.

Question: At the end of the movie, Aidan asks Rachel what will become of the person they show Aidan's copy of the videotape to as, according to the rule, in order for Aidan to be saved, he must make a copy (which Rachel helps him do) and show it to another individual. I want to know who? The second movie, which takes place about six months later, never clears this up. If Aidan is still alive six months after the events of the first movie, who did he show the video to in order to save himself? It couldn't have been his mother, because the rule says anyone who watches the cursed tape must show it to someone who has never seen it before.

Chosen answer: A deleted scene shows the tape sitting on a shelf in a video rental store. It's safe to assume someone from that store rented it.

lartaker1975

Question: Near the end of the movie, after Rachel leaves the apartment where her boyfriend got killed by Samara, she sees a young woman exiting the stairwell below her. Rachel is careful not to be noticed. Who is that other woman?

Chosen answer: She was a girl that Noah worked with and was possibly dating as indicated by an earlier scene where the same girl kissed Noah in his apartment while Rachel was there.

Serious B

Question: How was Samara's tape first circulated after she had placed the images on it?

Chosen answer: A cabin was built over the well and Samara imprinted the tape when it was there. It probably stayed in that cabin for a while before someone stole it from the cabin to show other people, not realizing what power the tape had.

Question: Exactly how does Katie die? In the scene where Katie gets attacked, in the last second her face turns rotten like someone dying in water, which means she already starts dying. But in the flashback as her mother finds her, Katie is dead in the closet, as if she tried to hide from Samara there. Why would Samara move the dead body to the closet? Or if Katie hid there when being chased by Samara, did she already have the rotten face while still alive?

Chosen answer: They never explain how anyone really dies. But it can be guessed that what happens to you physically is similar to what happened to Samara as she died. The fact that the body was in the closet isn't really significant. Samara's spirit simply placed the body there to be found. It may have to do with it being a dark, closed space, like the well where Samara died.

Answer: Samara's kills her victims by engendering them to fall into sheer hopelessness, ultimately, very literally, scaring them to death. The process is called psychosomatic death and results when someone's sympathetic system produces too overwhelming of a response to an emotional stress (fight or flight) and the body falls into cardiac arrhythmias and vascular collapse (heart attack). Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voodoo_death.

Question: Did Becca see Samara too?

Chosen answer: Yes. She saw Samara come out of the TV and kill Katie. That is why she was in a mental institute, and TVs had to be wheeled by her behind a curtain so she wouldn't see them and freak out.

Question: Why is there a lamb in the 'death tape'? I've seen this film at least 20 times, I've figured out everything else except the relevance of the lamb.

Chosen answer: The lamb is normally associated with innocence.

Timothy Cheseborough

Question: I understand Samara "haunting" her parents, spooking the horses, killing everyone who watches her video as an act of revenge, but why then does she torment (or at least "talk to") Aiden? Aiden has visions of Samara days before his cousin is killed, and for some reason, she seems to interact with him a lot, though we never see it in the movie.

Chosen answer: Aiden is psychic. He can sense Samara, though he doesn't understand exactly what he is experiencing.

Timothy Cheseborough

Question: Where have I seen the actress who plays Noah's film student assistant/girlfriend before? She looks so familiar.

Chosen answer: Her name is Pauley Perrette. She plays Abby in NCIS. Check out http://imdb.com/name/nm0005306/.

Josh Appelbaum

Question: Why is your face blurred in pictures one you've seen the tape? Just a sign that you'll be dead soon?

Ral0618

Chosen answer: Yes, the blurred faces do indicate that you've been cursed by the video. It has to do with Samara's face always being covered by her hair, which is also the reason behind infected people unconsciously scribbling over the faces of people in pictures. It also foreshadows the victim's fate (hence the distorted face) if they don't copy and send the cursed tape to someone else.

Shay

Question: What did Samara's dad mean when he said, "my wife wasn't meant to have a child"?

Chosen answer: She's infertile. She wasn't ever supposed to have children. It's hinted that she made a deal with evil forces to have Samara.

Grumpy Scot

Question: Samara made pictures while in the psychiatric ward (the tree, horse and person). Why is there a person with all of the hardware? And what is the relevance of the burning tree? I understand that Samara burned it into her wall, but how is it important?

Chosen answer: The burning tree represents the sun going down behind that tree in the field near the cabin.

Timothy Cheseborough

Question: Why was the videotape made? I don't think it was ever explained.

Chosen answer: The tape was never made as such, Samara projected the images onto the tape when the college kids tried to record the football match. In the original novel she is trying to spread her curse across the country - each person will see it and pass it on to another person, or two other people to be safe and so on until everyone is infected. There is no reason given - she is just angry with the world after her mother's death.

Shay

Question: Why not just try every way possible (physically or spiritually, for example, pour holy water on them) destroy all of the tapes. Thus ending the cruse forever? Will that just make things worst?

Titanic

Chosen answer: Destroying the only copy of the tape would prevent the curse from spreading, but the last person to see it who didn't make another would still die seven days out.

Phixius

Answer: Destroying the only copy won't work because Samara can make copies with her supernatural powers. If destroying the copies could work her father would already had done it before.

Question: Why is Samara evil?

Chosen answer: We're not sure yet - most people believe it is because Anna Morgan made a deal with the devil to have a child. She shouldn't have been able to have children.

shorty30490

Question: Throughout the movie Samara is about ten, but she comes out Noah's television as someone who is about twenty. Why the difference?

Chosen answer: She is still in her 10's - the reason why she looks older is because her corpse is rotten

Malaver

Question: Why does Aiden call Rachel by her first name?

apple

Chosen answer: He's a very independent child. Notice how he dressed himself (including tie) AND laid out his mother's outfit. Some children call their parents by their first names to exert their independence.

Timothy Cheseborough

Question: Samara just wanted to be heard and killed everyone who didn't make a copy to show to someone else. But say that someone showed another person the same copy they had seen. Would she still kill that person?

Chosen answer: Yes because Rachel watched the same copy as Katie, (her niece) and she received a phone call just like the others. She wasn't killed because she cracked the puzzle before her 7 days were up. I don't think it makes any difference, as long as you see the tape.

Answer: No, as long as you show someone else the tape and they watch the entire thing, your life is spared. Whenever Rachel realises she made a copy, she is really just realizing she was spared because she showed the tape to someone else. Making a copy isn't a bad idea though, because if the original would somehow get destroyed, the viewer would be out of luck.

Question: How old is Samara? Some websites say she's 10 when she died but others say she was 8. Other sites say 11 or 12.

Chosen answer: According to the first movie, Samara is around 8 years old whenever she is thrown in the well. Richard and Anna Morgan returned to Moesko island in 1970 with baby Samara. Whenever Rachel is researching Anna Morgan, she finds that Anna committed suicide in 1978, shortly after she disposed of Samara at Shelter Mountain inn. Some details have been changed in the 2nd and 3rd movie, raising the question of how old Samara is. But after looking at the hospital records in the first movie, she is 8.

Question: Why is Anna Morgan wearing a nineteenth-century dress when she pushes Samara down the well? The event happened in the 1970's.

Chosen answer: The Morgans may just be old-fashioned. It wasn't uncommon for women in the 1970's to wear dresses. The family also lives on an island that is secluded and didn't have to worry about being judged as much as they would have in a city or rural community.

Question: How does Samara know the phone number when the person finishes watching the tape?

Chosen answer: It is never explicitly stated, however Samara is a supernatural entity so the answer is "magic".

BaconIsMyBFF

Question: If you were on your seventh day and there was no TV in sight, would Samara still be able to kill you?

Chosen answer: Most likely. We have no idea how far away she can be from the TV she spawns from, or if anybody who hasn't been cursed can even see her. Chances are, she would come out of the nearest TV, and stalk you over a great distance. As we see when she kills Naomi Watson's boyfriend, she can practically teleport, and who knows if her power is limited only to TVs.

Question: How come Becca (Katie's friend) knew how many days were left to Rachel's death?

Chosen answer: People who have seen Samara are infected by her - one of the side effects is that she can recognise people who are cursed, and how long they have left.

Shay

Question: Hypothetically, what would happen if everyone in the world, or at least those with the means to watch the tape, saw it, copied it and passed it on to someone else? Would the curse, in a sense, die?

Chosen answer: Hypothetically, it could be assumed that the curse would die. But it would be nearly impossible for someone to not drop the ball on it and inadvertently let the curse continue.

LuMaria 1

Question: What is the meaning of all of the images that Samara made in the hospital? The rocking horse, the hardware, the weird people, etc; and what is the significance of the spinning up-side-down chair in the video? I know she had a chair in her loft, but why is it spinning upside down?

Chosen answer: Every image that Samara created was made with her mind and was relevant to everything that happened with her time with the Morgans. All of the objects are odd and disfigured thus the spinning chair. The hardware was there because of Mr. Morgans constant use of hammers etc. in and around the farmhouse.

Question: In one scene string came out of Rachel's mouth, which I know was related to the tape, but what is the deal with the string coming out of someone's mouth on the tape, and who was that supposed to be? Did Samara swallow the string?

apple

Chosen answer: It wasn't actually string; it was the cable from the electrodes which were placed on Samara when she was in the hospital. When Noah is in the hospital looking for the tape there is a shot of him looking at a set of electrodes and realising their relevance.

Tallicame

Question: What was the deal with all the horses drowning? Was it just because Samara was evil and she was causing it? What about the horse Rachel sees on the ship that freaks out? Is it scared of Rachel because she's been "infected" by the tape? She's already showed the tape to Noah, so she should be okay at that point, right?

Krista

Chosen answer: When Samara was sent to sleep in the barn the horses kept her up at night. Therefore they have ended being negatively affected by her and the video.

Mistakes

In the scene when the main character is in the library on the internet, she goes to a couple of websites. When the shot shows the URL up top, it is C:\windows98\mydocuments\etc.html. Instead of actually searching on the web they used a premade html page and accessed it from their computer. It's simple enough to just not display the address bar in your browser, so I don't know why they let this one slip through...

Trivia

If you look closely you can, between some scenes, see a flash of the ring the people see in the beginning of the tape (and what Rachel sees when she's in the well and looks up when the lid is being pushed back on).
