Revealing mistake: When Kirk goes to kick his opponent, you can see the kick was at least a foot and a half from the man.
Revealing mistake: When Mr Hengist goes on the rampage in the hearing room, you can see that the actor playing Hengist is an obvious stunt double wearing a bald cap, whereas John Fiedler has hair on the back and sides.
Revealing mistake: Kirk uses a sword to cleave a Roman guard during his escape from the TV studio, but there is no blood on it. Later, though, when Claudius stabs Merrick in the back, there is blood on the knife blade.
Revealing mistake: Kirk uses a submachine-gun to shoot the lock of the cell holding Spock and McCoy, but no bullet holes appear, nor is the lock damaged.
Revealing mistake: A Roman guard empties half a magazine of bullets from his submachine-gun into Flavius, but there are no bullet holes in his body, nor blood on the floor from the wounds inflicted by the bullets.

Revealing mistake: As Apollo's head and neck appear on the screen, the neck of the black T-shirt used to mask his body is easily seen, and his shoulders are faintly visible.

Revealing mistake: As Kirk and Spock take off in the car, the painted backdrop is recognizable between the buildings. There is a vertical edge to it about three feet away from the edge of the auto repair building.
Revealing mistake: In the close up shots of the mirror Sulu, the poor make up job of the scar on his face is very evident.
Revealing mistake: While Kirk watches, the machine fires at the Enterprise. As Spock is knocked backwards, watch his hands as he goes forward. They automatically go into a certain, almost practiced position. Then a moment later, the Communications officer is reporting to Spock. As she does, another shot hits the ship. She and just about all the crew react to the jolt a second before the camera and lighting crews simulate the hit. (00:26:40)
Revealing mistake: Accounting for some effects being re-done by modern digital formatting, when the Enterprise approaches the drifting Constellation, as it rotates, you can see a star pass through the solid part of the Constellation's saucer.
Revealing mistake: In the tent after Kirk and friends give up their weapons, there is a small fire in the holder in the center of the room. Although the flames are slightly off center to the camera's left, the are projections of flame light from off the camera's right offscreen.
Revealing mistake: When the delegation of locals approach Kirk's party, the Red-shirt yells "KLINGON!" and goes to fire. As he moves, you can see the outline of the block the alien weapon will stick in.
Revealing mistake: When Kirk, Spock and McCoy study a diagram that shows various parts of the Nomad probe, the lower right of the diagram reads "Computer Data Banks Recall & Transmition". It should read "Transmission".
Revealing mistake: McCoy is knelt down with the rather comically named Flavious Maximus attacking him. On the remastered version it is obvious it is a stunt double doing the part. (00:34:20)
Revealing mistake: Kirk jumps across the burning hot forge to hide from the people approaching him, only problem is that he actually touches the red hot coals with the palm of his hand. Somehow he managed to avoid serious burns. (00:31:15)
Revealing mistake: After Kirk and party are captured by the police, a montage of scenes depicting the planet's buildings plays while the log entry is heard. One of the buildings shown, though hard to read, has the title "Massachusetts Institute of Technology" (M.I.T.) above the columns.

Revealing mistake: When the camera goes in on a close up of the phaser, when the trigger is pulled, the indicator light to signal a reaction by the intended target that's usually too small to be seen or hidden by animation is visible.
Revealing mistake: As Kirk and company exit through the tunnel, the seams of the wall sections are visible.
Chosen answer: If they're in orbit, they're being pulled along by the planet's gravity well, therefore, impulse engines would only be used for minor corrections and would be "on standby" while in orbit, but not active. (Like keeping your car idling without revving the engine and creating plumes of exhaust).
