Night Court (1984)

Murder - S4-E12

Question: At the end of the episode, why did Dan say *God bless you* to the robber and then what looks like kiss the man's wrist?

Answer: Dan had been celibate for an unusually long time (for him). He was so desperate for release that he was willing to sleep with the geriatric woman from the sperm bank. The Mugger prevented him from having a regrettable sexual encounter, and he's grateful.

Brian Katcher

Answer: It's a cartoon, and it's funny that every time Spongebob leaves the station, even for a second, that's when the bus arrives. It's comedy, and there's no logic behind it.

Tommy Boy (1995)

Question: At the end of the movie, why was Paul the only one to get arrested? Both him and Beverly were con artists wanted for different types of fraud but only Paul was being taken away while Beverly simply walked off with Zalinksky.

Answer: Paul isn't being arrested for this particular scam, but for the warrants out on him in other states.

Brian Katcher

Answer: It's a bit of movie silliness, mostly. She'd definitely have been arrested in real life. If you wanted to justify it, you could say that Paul was the one who actually did all the illegal acts (bigamy aside), so he was the one the police would be most interested in apprehending. Beverly could still be arrested at a later date if Paul provided evidence of her involvement in the various crimes they committed (her bigamous marriage would definitely constitute a felony since it was done to defraud the Callahans).

The Goonies (1985)

Question: Wouldn't the plumbers who installed the pipes for the country club have had access to the cavern that didn't require them to face traps? Couldn't the kids have gotten out that way?

Answer: Once Mikey convinced everyone to stay down there and continue the treasure hunt, they stopped looking for a way out. There might have been another passage out of the cavern leading to such a door out, but we didn't see it from our angle and they just chose not to take it.

Captain Defenestrator

They found and banged on the pipes for help before Mikey made his "Our time" speech. Mouth even said, "These pipes belong to a building or something. If we bang on them, if we make enough noise, someone might hear us."

Answer: The pipes could have been there for decades, and the original entrance had been sealed or bulldozed (though the odds that the pipes never needed maintenance all that time are a little far-fetched).

Brian Katcher

Except that when they start banging on the pipes, it actually causes chaos at the country club that Troy is at.

Lisa the Skeptic - S9-E8

Question: The angel turns out to be a publicity stunt for the new mall, but it was only found because Lisa wanted to do an archaeological dig. How did the mall developers expect someone to find it before Lisa arranged the dig?

Answer: When Lisa is asking to do the dig, the developers have a private conversation and then agree. They planted the angel the night before.

Holes (2003)

Question: When Stanley gets to Camp Green Lake, Zero is already there, and, from my point of view, it seems like he's been there a while, with everyone already knowing that he can't read, saying he's stupid, etc. But Zero says he got caught by the police a day after he stole the famous shoes and threw them over the bridge, and therefore a day after Stanley was arrested. Did Stanley's trial really take that long? Am I misinterpreting something? Is there something else I'm missing?

CaprisunFishes

Answer: In the book, Stanley's trial was delayed due to the schedule of the ball player who testified against him. Also, Zero was a poor homeless kid with no one to advocate for him and probably got railroaded through the system.

General questions

Does anyone remember this after-school special type show from the early 80s? Some popular high school students convince a nerdy kid that an uppity popular girl likes him, causing him to humiliate himself in public. Shortly after, all three of the popular kids start receiving messages from an alien being on their TV. The kids freak out and tell the world they're communicating with a spaceman, only for the alien to actually be the nerdy kid who hacked the TV broadcast as revenge.

Brian Katcher

Answer: Found the answer elsewhere, 'Revenge of the Nerd' (not 'Revenge of the Nerds').

Question: At the end of the movie, Charles and Carrie decide to spend the rest of their lives together without being married. If Charles loves Carrie so much and wants to spend the rest of his life with her, why doesn't he just marry her?

Ashley Davis

Answer: I've been with my girlfriend for 25 years, and we are not married. You do not need to marry someone to love them.

Nottaproblem

Answer: Carrie had just gone through a divorce, and Charles had left a woman at the altar. They were both kind of soured on the idea of marriage.

Brian Katcher

Answer: I don't recall if it was determined whether or not they eventually married. The end showed them together with their baby and implied that they had married by then.

raywest

He specifically asked her not to be his wife.

The Wonder Years (1988)

Show generally

Question: Did this show have an episode in which Wayne was stood up by a date, or he couldn't convince a girl to go out with him? Then Kevin told him that the girl thinks he is pathetic. I described this moment in the "General Questions" section here, and someone said it might be this show. Thanks.

Answer: Sounds like the episode 'Hiroshima, Mon Frère', season 2, episode 8.

Uncle Buck (1989)

Question: Miles and Maizy are twins, so wouldn't it be Maizy's birthday too? Why didn't she get a party, clown, gifts, etc.?

Answer: Where are you getting the idea that they're twins? Miles is a little older than Maizy.

Red Dwarf (1988)

Justice - S4-E3

Question: When Rimmer is jailed for killing everyone on Red Dwarf, why did they go down the route of getting Rimmer a retrial? Wouldn't it be faster and easier to simply turn Rimmer off and then reboot him?

Answer: Purely speculation, but perhaps the Justice computer took over Rimmer's light bee and blocked a shutdown. Even if they did a hard reboot on Red Dwarf, the original Rimmer would still be trapped on Justice World.

Brian Katcher

Answer: They could do that after they left the planet, sure. But if they tried it while they were there, the Justice Zones would punish them for it. Best to play along until you can get away.

Captain Defenestrator

Question: After George gives away most of the honeymoon money, only two dollars are left. Would two dollars have really kept the Building and Loan open?

Answer: No. It's just that they didn't have to tell anyone that their funds were unavailable, which really would have made them go under.

Brian Katcher

Question: Why was the CIA agent pleading not to be sent to Detroit?

Answer: Detroit has long been notorious for its high crime, high unemployment, and urban blight. It's just a joke about how it's not a very pleasant place to be. Heck, the city motto is 'We hope for better things' and 'It will rise from the ashes.'

High I.Q. - S6-E20

Question: At the party, one of the "dumb" guests says that he teaches at a school in Los Angeles. Why is he apparently "dumb"?

Azalea

Answer: At the time, American public schools, especially those in large cities, were under fire for underperforming, especially compared to those in Japan. It was just a dig on the public's perceived views on education and teachers at the time.

Sleepers (1996)

Question: Can someone explain the whole thing with Henry Addison and the $8,000? I don't get the link between that and King Benny asking for 8 grand from Rizzo's brother.

Brittle Fingers

Answer: King Benny "sold" Henry's debt to Rizzo's brother, Little Caesar. He then informs Caesar that Henry was the one who killed his brother, knowing that he'd kill Henry, and that he could use the debt as an excuse.

Question: What exactly was wrong with Hedy? What made her so messed up?

Answer: Hedy's twin sister drowned when she was a child. She's trying to reform that bond with Allie.

Jurassic Park (1993)

Question: What was BioSyn planning on doing with the dinosaur DNA if Nedry had been successful in getting it to them?

Answer: Cloning their own dinosaurs and opening a rival park.

Brian Katcher

Answer: Agree with the other answer, but it was revealed later that the dinosaurs were also valuable commodities to sell to private parties for private zoos, big-game trophy hunting, as bio-weapons, cruel sport competitions similar to rooster fighting, etc. In Jurassic World Dominion, small ones were being cooked and served as a delicacy.

Question: What would have realistically happened to Mike at the very end, when his jacket got caught in the airplane door?

Brittle Fingers

Answer: Chris Farley weighed over 300 pounds. His jacket would have torn long before the plane took off.

General questions

When scenes take place in restaurants, a character will occasionally order something like "the chicken", "the salmon", or "the steak." In my experience, most restaurants have more than one option that involves chicken, steak, etc. Is there a reason for doing this on-camera, or have I just not found such a restaurant?

Answer: Someone ordering food isn't particularly interesting. "I'll have the t-bone steak, medium well, with a baked potato—hold the chives—and broccoli" would slow down the movie's pacing more than "I'll have the steak."

Brian Katcher

Answer: Totally agree with the other answer but would add that movie scenes are filmed multiple times over many hours or even several days to get the best result. In a restaurant scene, if an order is being served, it's easier with simpler food, like a T-bone steak, that won't make a mess, spill, smell, or wilt under hot lights. It also keeps the audience from being distracted by hearing some fancy menu item being ordered and then wondering what it is. Realistic-looking prop food may also be used, so simpler is better, easier, and more efficient.

The Simpsons (1989)

Homer's Enemy - S8-E23

Question: When Frank Grimes is shown on the news, where is he receiving his degree? He appears to be outside of a house, but he says later that he lives between two bowling alleys.

Answer: The news crew might have wanted to film him outside, on a nearby street, instead of going to his apartment. It looks more cheerful.

Answer: There's no telling. Possibly his parents' house. Possibly a house he sold when he moved to Springfield and he had to downgrade when his promised high-paying job went to a dog.

Brian Katcher

His parents abandoned him.

Good point. Then his own house, wherever he lived before Springfield.
