Transformers (2007)

Question: If Lennox is a captain and Epps is a sergeant, then why is Epps the one who calls the Pentagon and relays the information about the thing that is attacking the village? You'd think the higher ranking officer would be the one to call the Pentagon.

Answer: Usually, yes, unless the higher ranking officer designated the lower ranking officer to do so. But this was not a casual situation. Whoever was able to make the call, made it.

V for Vendetta (2005)

Chosen answer: He has a natural immunity to it.

Phixius

Answer: He was tested on but not with a virus. They achieved what they intended and that was to crate a blank slate super soldier! To quote the movie "the subject remembered nothing of who he was". But he remembered the torture that got him there and had the biography to inspire his hatred. The virus was created from Vs blood because of his reactions to the virus.

Chosen answer: Instead of passing on they would cease to exist.

Question: When the rebels talk about the "forest moon of Endor," is Endor the name of the moon itself or of the planet it orbits? The initial description makes it sound like it's the planet, but later on they refer to the moon as "Endor." Which is it?

Answer: Endor is the name of the planet. It's never stated in the film, but the novelization explains that the planet Endor was destroyed some time ago and the moon which the Ewoks inhabit now orbits the star that the planet once orbited. The moon is referred to as Endor merely for the sake of brevity, as there is no longer a planet to confuse it with.

Question: Why, at the end, does Cogsworth try to make it out like he was the one who said that Belle was going to be the one to break the spell, when both he and the audience know that Lumiere actually said that?

Answer: Because he a Lumiere have a bit of a "friendly" rivalry. He's either teasing Lumiere or genuinely trying to take credit for it to spite him.

Question: In the prologue to the movie, Galadriel states that the ring has been forgotten, but Galadriel herself was around during the historic war against Sauron, and Elrond encouraged Isildur to throw it into the lava in Mount Doom, and there's even a mural in Rivendell of Isildur cutting the ring from Sauron's hand, so obviously the ring has not been forgotten. What gives? It can't be that "forgotten" means "believed now only to be a myth" ("History became legend; legend became myth") because Elrond and Galadriel (and countless other elves) would know that the ring wasn't a myth because they were a part of the earlier events. Nor can it be that Galadriel is referring to general history when she says, "For none now live who remember it," because she is not extemporizing on the nature of history, she is specifically referring to the ring: "For two and a half thousand years the ring passed out of all knowledge." Not just men's knowledge, or dwarves' knowledge, but all knowledge. Similarly, Gandalf has been in Middle-Earth for "300 lives of men", but Gandalf has to look up the story of the ring in historical papers; how did such an epic and giant war escape his notice?

Answer: Elves usually count themselves out of affairs like this, preferring to keep to themselves. It was a man who took the ring, so it is a man's tale until the elves choose to involve themselves again. And Gandalf is well aware of the war that saw the supposed defeat of Sauron. He's researching the historical documents looking for any clues, any seemingly irrelevant yet ultimately useful minutia, he may not yet be aware of.

Phixius

Your answer doesn't make any sense. She says has fallen out of all knowledge. Whether or not elves prefer to keep to themselves doesn't change that they have knowledge of the ring.

brianjr0412

The ring was deemed lost for good, eventually those that were there forgot it existed (or could still exist) untill the dark shadow over Mirkwood and later Mordor jolted their memories.

Question: How did Larry find out that "Dakota" was the word for making the horses stop the carriage?

Answer: He looked the information up at some point during the montage that showed him doing all the historical research.

Phixius

Is it actually shown on the website he looks at on screen or just implied?

The Shining (1980)

Question: Couldn't almost any continuity "mistake" be attributed to the Overlook's ability to "shine" or control Jack's mind and perceptions of his surroundings? Or are there only certain missing/moved/incongruous items that were deliberate examples of the hotel "shining"?

Answer: One could argue that point, but Kubrick likely had specific incidences in mind, and others are genuine oversights of the editor.

Question: Has JK Rowling ever stated what would have happened if Harry had joined Slytherin and/or become a Dark Wizard? Would Voldemort have sought to slay or recruit him? The scene where he's provoking Harry into using the Unforgiveable Curse on Bellatrix got me thinking.

Answer: She's never said, but I should think Voldemort would see Harry as an even larger threat if he'd joined Slytherin/become a Dark Wizard. Voldemort would assume that Harry would still be trying to kill him, but to take over his rule instead of ridding the world of it.

Question: What footage was cut from the original but was added in the Uncut DVD?

Star Wars (1977)

Question: Is it possible that the planets in star wars exist? i know it's science fiction, but it does take place a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Question: Is Harry the New Goblin, Hobgoblin, or Goblin Jr? I've heard all of them used while people talked about Spider-Man 3.

Answer: The "official" full-length title is "New Green Goblin" but he is often referred to on licensed products simply as "New Goblin." In comic book continuity terms, he'd be Green Goblin II.

General questions

Multiple times on this site I have seen mistake corrections saying that the mistake is not valid because the two movies of the same series are not consistent (e.g. Harry Potter 2 and 3). Why are they not consistent- is it because they have different directors?

Blibbetyblip

Chosen answer: More or less, yes. Different directors have had different visions for the films, and if a filmmaker intentionally makes changes in order to fit his ideas better, it's a bit harsh to class a difference as a "mistake", even a deliberate one.

General questions

There was, a few years ago, a cartoon on Cartoon Network about a black teenager who I think was called Virgil, and he and some people were exposed to some sort of chemical or radiation. After, the main character had magnetic powers and could float on a trash can lid. Does anyone know what this was called?

Answer: Static Shock. The powers were electric, though, not magnetic.

General questions

Does anyone know why story lines on daytime soap operas drag on for months? You can watch 2 weeks of episodes, yet it will still be the same day on the soap.

Answer: The writers for these soaps have to come up with new material on a daily basis. It's far easier for them to drag one story out than to come up with completely new plot lines ever other day.

Jason Riley

Chosen answer: It is possible to be born with this affliction, but his injury to the same eye suggests he wasn't.

V for Vendetta (2005)

Question: How did V get thousands of Guy Fawkes masks manufactured and shipped on a train without the government knowing about it?

Answer: Those masks are mass produced anyway. They're novelties. He probably got them shipped through some sort of deceit, the same way he stole all the items in his home.

Question: How come the boy in the beginning of the film has one of the nine coins? Who is he? And since Elizabeth was waiting for Will to return to shore, does that make Will a free man and severed from his bonds from the ship? Lastly, how when Will took over as captain of the Dutchman, all the crew members resumed human forms again?

Answer: The "nine pieces of eight" were never actually coins. The boy just has a plain piece of eight, a fairly common coin. No, Will is not freed from the captaincy but he is allowed back on shore for 1 day every 10 years. The crew slowly became part "fish" when Davy Jones stopped conveying the souls of those who die at sea to the land of the dead. Since the Dutchman had a new captain, who had yet to fail in that duty, the "curse" was lifted.

Phixius

Answer: It was said by one of the producers that Will could return back to Elizabeth and their son (forever) when he finished his first 10 Years on the Dutchman and that a new captain would have been found but for some reason they took this part out.
