General questions

Ive seen a film years ago and want to know the name it. All I can remember is that there was a group of kids that made a machine that can make a bubble surround you and lift you into the air. They make craft from old fairground parts and make the bubble surround it and fly into space. They meet a group of aliens and one resembles a banana (i think). Any idea or am I just a freak?

Answer: This movie is "Explorers" from 1985.

Ghost Rider (2007)

Question: The Caretaker tells Johnny that St. Michael threw some angels out of heaven and that they were called the Hidden. Why where they thrown out of heaven and how did they become the Hidden?

Answer: They were thrown out of heaven for siding with Lucifer when he tried to overthrow God. They were called the hidden because the could hide within the elements.

Blade: Trinity (2004)

Question: Throughout the movie, there are a few times where we see Drake in a peculiar posture. One of his arms (I believe it's the left) is always held up at an angle. This is especially noticeable during the climax of the movie, where his armor is fitted to that posture, can anyone tell me why he might hold it up like that?

Answer: He'd have needed his armor made to allow his arm to raise up high enough to wrap around his victims, drawing them in for a bite. After so many eons of wearing that armor (which can't go all the way down since it's made to go higher) he just got used to holding his arm that way.

Silent Hill (2006)

Question: Why was Pyramid-Head's name changed to "Red Pyramid" for this film adaptation?

Answer: It is a reference to the red pointed hoods the executioners of Silent Hill wore in colonial times. This is also why the helmet is a pyramid in the game. Since he is never officially named in the game, only referred to by the characters as "Pyramid-Head," the filmmakers were free to come up with their own reference for him. "Red Pyramid" sounds more dramatic than "Pyramid-Head" and it ties the creatures' reason for being into the name.

General questions

My boyfriend wants to see this movie again, but can't remember the title. A group of people, traveling on a bus, find out they are all dead. Apparently each has a loose end s/he needs to tie up before heading to the hereafter. Thanks.

Answer: That would be "Heart and Souls" starring Charles Grodin, Alfre Woodard, Kyra Sedgwick, Tom Sizemore, and David Paymer as the people "on the bus," and Robert Downey Jr. as their "corporeal being."

General questions

If an actor does not want to smoke a real cigarette in a film, is there an alternative on offer (a prop cigarette for eg), or would it be more likely that that particular part would just be recast with someone who had no problem smoking?

Answer: There are non-tobacco cigarettes available for this. They contain an herb that has no nicotine or any other chemical/toxin which may affect the lungs or state of mind. They are, however, purported to smell and taste quite terrible. These are what Eva Amurri smoked in the movie "Saved!".

General questions

I watched a film on TV when I was a kid and I can't remember the name of it. It was about an adopted boy who discovered that his birth parents had been mermaids, and as he hit puberty he began to turn into a mermaid himself. All I remember is that he started to be thirsty all the time and whenever he went in water he began to grow scales, which was a problem since he was on the school swimming team. I think there was a scene when he dived into the sea to catch up with a ferry which was pulling away, and another when he was about to start a swimming race but realised he still had his trainers on. Anyone know the name of this film? Thanks.

Answer: The Thirteenth Year.

Question: What significance do the melted hats have on the field outside scientist's lab?

Jason Riley

Chosen answer: They weren't melted. They were duplicated hats and they were there because the transportation machine Tesla was working on worked more like a fax machine instead of a mere transporter, creating a duplicate in another location.

Chosen answer: No. I'm sure something similar could be created, but it would not have the same properties as shown in the film.

28 Days Later (2002)

Question: Which is the true ending, the one where the three of them are calling the chopper down of the one where Jim dies?

Answer: The one where all three signal the aircraft is the *original* ending. Since it's all subject to the writers' fancy, I suppose it's impossible to say which it the "true" ending.

The Italian Job (2003)

Question: When Steve and Stella are at the restaurant on a date, Steve catches on that Stella is John Bridger's daughter because she says the phrase her father always said (about not trusting the devil inside of people). But then, after he has grabbed her wrist, he says "I knew I recognised you from somewhere" or something like that. The thing is that if Steve had recognised her before (obviously when she went to his house as the 'fake' cable engineer) why did he not do anything?

Answer: It was more a nagging thought at that point. Just like when you see someone on the street that you think you've seen before but you can't quite place where. It wasn't enough for Steve to act on at that time. He didn't even know it was someone he'd *want* to act against; for all he knew, she could have been a friend's sister he met once.

Phixius

Answer: To add to the other person's previous answer, Steve does state when Stella comes over as the cable woman, "Haven't we met somewhere before?" to which Stella says "I don't think so." I am paraphrasing from memory but that was the essence of what was said. So he had already established that he was trying to place her. Could have met her at a club or something for all he knew. He also thinks Charlie and company are dead at this point. They only reveal themselves after he confronts Stella about being Bridger's daughter.

Question: Is Collins a homosexual? Because he loves Angel as a woman but Angel is actually a man. So is he gay because he loves a man or straight because he loves a woman?

Answer: He is homosexual. He loves Angel as a person. Albeit, a person who is a man that dresses like a woman.

Question: Why do Gaston and his mob proceed to enter the castle, when it is clear from the looks on their faces that they are a little confused and suspicious as to why a bunch of objects just happen to be lining the entrance hall?

Answer: Because they're there for the beast. They aren't just going to turn back simply because some stuff was out of place.

V for Vendetta (2005)

Question: Why is Gordon equated so often with V? They each have secret chambers full of art, they make the same eggs and some scenes are similarly structured. Are we supposed to think Gordon is V for a while?

Answer: No. It may be for no other reason than to set up the joke Gordon makes about being V. Or it could, more likely, be to make it seem less like V is alone in his views on society.

X-Men 3 (2006)

Question: Why didn't they just shoot Mystique with the cure, rather then hold her in a cell like they did? Knowing how dangerous she is, and how she can shape-shift into anyone, why keep her incarcerated? Surely they knew that Magneto would try to rescue her, and how unstoppable he could be. It would have been in their best interest to just "cure" her.

Answer: Because they're not allowed to. You can't just beat a potentially violent prisoner unconscious. This is along the same lines. The legality of usage of "the cure" has not been fully clarified. So all personnel were given the order not to use it unless absolutely necessary.

Conspiracy - S1-E25

Question: What happens if a "Captain-eyes-only" message comes in and the captain is off the ship and not easily accessible? Is the message transferred, or does the captain give his first officer permission to view the message?

Answer: It would depend on just how inaccessible the Captain was. If possible the message would be transferred. Otherwise, in the Captain's absence, the first officer would be the acting Captain and would be permitted to view the message.

Question: The architect mentions a "mother" of the Matrix. Who is she? When Neo asks if it's the Oracle, the Architect says "Please." Does he mean please how can you think that, or please don't interrupt, I'm speaking?

Answer: It's the Oracle. The Architect says "please" because Neo called her an oracle. To the Architect, she's just another program. He is scoffing at Neo for using that term, not for coming to that conclusion.
