Plot hole: James appears in every episode before his introduction in "Thomas and the Breakdown Train." Also, James is supposed to be black, because at the end of the episode, James is told he will get a different coat of paint. (He is also black in the book).
Revealing mistake: When Thomas leaves Dryaw, in the background, the biplane's propeller stops spinning, revealing that the propeller is actually a CD.
Continuity mistake: When Thomas goes through Henry's tunnel, the first van in his train has one bogey. When he comes out, the van has two bogeys.
Continuity mistake: When Thomas leaves Knapford, there is a van in front of the brake van. When Thomas approaches Henry's tunnel, that van disappears.
Continuity mistake: In a close up of Thomas when Gordon is pulling him, Thomas is not coupled up to Gordon's train.
Revealing mistake: When Gordon is being pulled from the pond, in the close up scene of Gordon reversing up the sleeper bed, the front of his buffer beam/running board catches on the upright stake to the right hand side of the worker figure, pulling it back before it rights itself. Audio problem: (Only in the George Carlin narrated American version) At the end of the episode, when the engines are singing "We wish you a merry Christmas", you can briefly hear Ringo Starr's original narration.
Continuity mistake: When Gordon approaches the station, in the two previous shots, the background changes from a close up of Gordon to a wide shot of Thomas and Gordon.
Continuity mistake: The engine sheds change design throughout season 1.
Plot hole: How could Gordon's driver tell the station master that Gordon couldn't get up the hill? There are no phones on Gordon's hill.
Continuity mistake: At the beginning of the episode, the order in the sheds is Henry, Thomas, Gordon, James and Edward. But, when Thomas is complaining, the order is now Thomas, Gordon, James, Edward and Henry.
Audio problem: When Gordon backing down to the bottom of the hill, you can hear brakes screeching, but Gordon's wheels are still moving.
Continuity mistake: When Edward is pushing trucks over a turntable, when he stops, he is very close to the trucks, when the camera changes, he moves back a bit. (Note the tank the Fat Controller is standing on).
Continuity mistake: When Thomas teases James about bootlaces, the background disappears in a close up of Thomas.
Answer: Butch the breakdown truck must have pulled Gordon's tender all the way up the rails so the breakdown train can reach it and also Butch helped to get Gordon close to the winch.
