Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Question: Why do the survivors wear nothing but short-sleeved T-shirts and other flimsy clothes that can be easily bitten through? If you were fighting zombies who were trying to bite you, wouldn't you try to cover up your arms and face, even a leather jacket and a pair of thick gloves would help?

Answer: Yes, but protective clothing would also hinder your movements, making it harder to escape.

Charlie's Angels (2000)

Question: When they introduce Dylan (where she smokes and has a cast... and looks almost like a man) in the "Once Upon a Time" starting segment, there is a part of a song that goes "I love rock and roll". A recent version is sung by Britney Spears, but who sings that version in the movie?

Answer: The original version was by The Arrows. Joan Jett's version was a cover. But yes, that's Joan's version.

Answer: It's the original version of *I Love Rock N' Roll*, by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts.

Men in Black II (2002)

Question: After J neuralizes the video store guy he says 'Hey Ma' and then picks up a shovel. What was he going to do with that, kill his mom?

Answer: Yes. That was the joke. He was told something like 'get rid of your mother, and get on with your life'.

J I Cohen

He was not told to "get rid of your mother, and get on with your life"! He was told to "move your bum ass out your mother's house."

Answer: It gave you the assumption that he was gonna kill his mom in order to leave her house. Maybe even inherit money to go to Cambodia. People say the neuralizer influenced the man. What people forget is, the shovel was there the whole time. He didn't go looking for a shovel. He already has it in front of him.

Question: There is one thing that bothered me at the end of the movie. When the two police investigators are killed and the narrator says that the case is still open why didn't the authorities (police, FBI and so on), descend on that area and try to catch Leatherface? He just killed two police officers among other people and they are just going to leave it as an open case?

Tobin OReilly

Chosen answer: What makes you think they didn't? They obviously just never caught him.

Kill the Alligator and Run - S11-E19

Question: During the Spring Break vacation in 'Kill the Alligator and Run' episode, I don't understand a lot of the Kid Rock section. Who is Kid Rock and Joe C? And what is going on with the presenter with the diamond in her hand who gets dragged off by security when she says it's her birthday?

Answer: Kid Rock is a rock star, and Joe C was his sidekick (he died in 2000). The jewel in the hand was a reference to the movie Logan's Run, where the changing color of the jewel indicated that a person had reached the end of their alloted lifespan of 30 years.

Question: Is Leatherface based on a real person? If so, how close did they stick to the source material? Did he wear other peoples faces?

Answer: He's loosely based on Ed Gein, who made household objects and clothing out of human skin (mainly from corpses stolen from graveyards, but also from at least two murders that he committed). Gein also inspired Norman Bates of Psycho, and Buffalo Bill of Silence of the Lambs. See http://www.houseofhorrors.com/gein.htm.

Stargate SG-1 (1997)

Show generally

Question: I find it interesting than in most the worlds that they go to, the people there seem to speak perfect American English. In all the Star Trek shows and movies, we know that they have universal translators that help them understand most cultures. Did SG-1 get hold of a univ. translator on another world or from the Asgard?

Answer: I think it's just the writers taking a licence to help the plots along. Everybody spoke English long before the Asgard were introduced, and a 'universal translator' was never mentioned (I would have written one into the pilot, but that's just me).

J I Cohen

Answer: This was handwaves by the writers/producers early on as they felt it wouldn't be very interesting to watch Daniel spend half of every episode working out the native language of the planet of the week. At a stretch, we could suppose that the Ancients, the builders of the Stargates and the ones that seeded human life throughout the galaxy, who also spoke English by the time of their return to Earth from Atlantis, spread this form of language as well along with the ATA (Ancient Technology Activation) gene.

Lemon of Troy - S6-E24

Question: When Milhouse meets his Shelbyville double, he tearily says "So this is what it feels like when doves cry." Could someone explain this reference to me?

Answer: It's a reference to a Prince song. See http://dag.wieers.com/personal/lyrics/When_Doves_Cry.php.

Answer: Allan Quatermain appeared in 14 books by H. See http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/authors/H_Rider_Haggard.htm and http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/haggard.htm.

White Hole - S4-E4

Question: In this episode, Rimmer says how the Eskimos had the right idea by taking the sick and old out into the snow, and then leaving them to it. Then he says 'that's why there is no Eskimo word for Eastbourne'. I don't get the joke. What does he mean?

Answer: Eastborne is a coastal resort town in Sussex in southern England. A lot of people go to live there after they retire, hence the joke.

X-Men (2000)

Question: Why does Rogue get that blonde-white streak in her hair at the end? I've never read the comic books, so if the answer's there, I wouldn't know.

Answer: It's from the stress of powering Magneto's device.

J I Cohen

Answer: In the comics the explanation is different. In the movie it's because Magneto channeled his powers through her, since they held on very long she didn't only take over his powers but eventually his physical appearance as well, his silver hair.

lionhead

Answer: In the comic books, Rogue could fly and was impervious to bullets. She got those abilities from another mutant, but she accidentally drained too much and received a permanent fix. That is what gave her the grey streak in her hair and put the other mutant in a coma.

Question: Can anyone tell me what Obi-Wan Kenobi means when he asks R4 to transmit a message to Coruscant? It's the "Care of the old folks home" bit which confuses me.

Answer: It's a humorous reference to the Jedi Council.

Gothika (2003)

Question: Does anyone know the significance of the title, Gothika? It wasn't apparent to me when watching the film.

Answer: The word Gothika means - when someone is seeing or feeling things that others don't see, and as a result, others think that someone is crazy, even when that someone is not crazy. All in all, that is the exact plot of the film.

Answer: It's meant to reflect the dark, 'gothic' aspects of the movie.

Question: In the scene where she is walking home in the rain after visiting her prostitute friend, in the background you can see 3 huge "tank" like structures. They are made twice as high by open girder and cable contraptions. The same things can be seen in the movie, "Spider", starring Ralph Fiennes. What are they?

Answer: Gas storage tanks.
