My Cousin Vinny (1992)

Question: Why does Pecsi lie so much to the judge about his credentials? He graduated from law school and passed the bar. The boys should be able to have whatever lawyer they want.

William Bergquist

Chosen answer: The judge is trying to ensure that Vinny will provide a competent and zealous defense for the boys, and not make a mockery of the courtroom procedure he loves so much. Since Vinny knows that six weeks of civil law practice, and zero courtroom time will not convince him, he lies.

Answer: Vinny is an out of state lawyer who (presumably) isn't admitted to practice in Alabama. In order to practice in that jurisdiction, Vinny would have to be admitted "pro hac vice" or "for this occasion only." Especially in capital criminal cases, a defense lawyer must be certified as having a certain level of expertise to avoid later appellate claims of ineffective counsel. In this case, Judge Trotter is actually being fairly lax in just relying on a brief interview of Vinny to make a decision to allow an out of jurisdiction lawyer verbally provide his criminal defense credentials.

Revealing mistake: The little sister says she didn't mean to back into the record player, but just before, she very noticeably makes an obvious move toward the record player. (00:53:30)

Silver Streak (1976)

Continuity mistake: At the end, when the runaway train is going through the garage, you see it approaching the end of the line as indicated by a large "bumper" at the end of the track yet when the shot changes to a front view to see it crashing through, the large "bumper" is gone.

Son in Law (1993)

Continuity mistake: When Crawl sits down with the log he is about to whittle, there is a large branch sticking out diagonally from the log. When the shot flips to a profile angle, the branch is now sticking straight up.

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: The branch sticks straight out of the log, the only difference when the shot changes angles it the position the log is being held at, having the branch sticking more pointed to the sky rather than straight out from his lap angle.

American Graffiti (1973)

Continuity mistake: The movie takes place in 1962, yet the band at the dance is playing The Kingsmen version of Louie Louie which didn't come out until 1963.

Character mistake: When Spencer Tracy is talking to his wife and daughter on two separate telephones, he places the phones up against each other so mom and daughter can talk to each other. One phone should be upside down so it would be speaker to transmitter rather than speaker to speaker.

Continuity mistake: In the opening credits, the guys are standing full depth in the giant shopping cart. When they get to the bottom, the cart most noticeably has a platform halfway down that the guys are standing on when they get thrown out. [It is mentioned on the cast commentary (by Bam) that they needed to raise it up because they were afraid of jumping out from so low down in the trolley. Still a mistake, but that's why it's there.]

Trivia: When Kilmer is sitting in the Limo with all the screaming girls outside, he is twirling a drumstick similar to twirling the pen in Top Gun and twirling two quarters in Real Genius.
