Continuity mistake: In the DA's office Marlowe says to Capt. Cronjager, " That's all, I was in a tough spot, I was probably wrong but I wanted to protect my client" and Marlowe's hat is on the DA's desk right next to his left arm. In the next shot an ash tray with a smoldering cigarette is next to his left arm (1945 Version on DVD). (01:04:45)????
Continuity mistake: In the DA's office Capt. Cronjager says to Marlowe, " So all you failed to do was report a murder that happened last night?". If you look closely at the far right of the screen there's a shadow on the wall of a female sculpture that wasn't there when we saw this spot at the beginning of the scene when Marlowe and Bernie Ohls walked in (1945 Version on DVD). (01:04:50)????
Continuity mistake: Chief Insp. Bernie Ohls hands the gun to Capt. Cronjager and we see that the lamp to the left of Dist. Atty. White is on. In the next shot if you look at the back of Dist. Atty. White's chair and the blinds behind him it's easy to see that the lamp is now off (1945 Version on DVD). (01:03:10)????
Continuity mistake: Outside Geiger's house, Marlowe throws his gun down on the floor making Carol Lundgren reach for it. He kicks him and knocks him out but if you look closely he only touches Lundgren's left shoulder with his foot, nowhere near his head. He doesn't hit anything as he falls either. (00:58:55)????
Continuity mistake: Marlowe tells Joe Brody to get the pictures of Carmen Sternwood and he walks over to his desk that we've seen in an earlier shot. No one goes near the desk but a different set of books are between the horse head bookends, and they keep moving throughout the scene. (00:48:40 - 00:52:20)????
