Continuity mistake: In the library scene Indy discovers the "X" high up on the balcony. The X is green with a grey background. When he breaks the tile to find the tomb the X has become a faint outline on the floor.

Plot hole: When Indy is stepping on the letters at the end, trying to spell out God's name, he steps on J, incorrectly, causing it to collapse. When he falls through, however, he grabs onto another letter so as not to fall down. The letters he grabs onto and pulls himself up are an L and a Y, which are not in the word Iehova, so should have collapsed too.
Revealing mistake: In the catacombs of the library, Indy and Elsa are waist deep in petroleum. Indy has a torch, and if you look carefully, you will see burning pieces of the torch fall and hit the petroleum. Wouldn't this start a fire as Kazim later on sets the cavern alight with a single match?
Plot hole: At one point, Indy rolls off of the side of a tank, and somehow gets a strap around one of the guns pointing out from the sides. The end of the barrel has already been blown open by the rock he shoved in earlier. How did the strap get around that big cluster of metal, and then back again so he could climb back on the tank?
01:34:15 - 01:35:05
Continuity mistake: When Indy and gang are racing the Nazis to the canyon of the Crescent Moon, Indy looks at the Nazi convoy with binoculars. Close-ups of Indy show the sun is clearly behind him, and the binoculars are in his shadow. But then a glare from the lens alerts the Nazis to their presence.
Audio problem: When Indy confronts the butler at the castle, we hear the butler say, "If you are a Scottish lord then I am Mickey Mouse." But his lips say something else. He actually said "then I am Jesse Owens." This line was changed because they thought that a lot of the audience wouldn't know who Jesse Owens (the black athlete who won at the Berlin Olympics) was.
Revealing mistake: When Indy is breaking through the wall in the catacombs, and he uses his shoulder as a battering ram. You can see his head actually bounce off a piece of the rock real hard as he is going through the wall. If the rock was real, I guess Indy would have a lot to cry about that night.
Continuity mistake: In the temple in the Canyon of the Crescent Moon, Indiana Jones rushes to his father's aid with the Holy Grail filled with water. He is shown pouring every last drop onto his father's wound by turning the Grail upside down, yet another camera angle shows his father clutching the grail to his chest, and there's still a bit of water in it.
Revealing mistake: Just a small detail. Watch the tank roll over the hill with the German officer holding onto the top. When the tank hits the ground, the turret pops off. The German soldier (the prop dummy) maintains its grasp on the turret and is pulled off with it. The sheer force of the crash would have easily blown a human body off the tank.
Factual error: Jehovah is spelled Iehovah in Latin. However medieval languages (Latin or vernacular) had neither official rules nor the letter 'J'. It was not until the sixteenth century that the French humanist Pierre de la Ramée proposed to use the 'J' as a separate letter distinct from the 'I'. The 'J' could therefore not have been a trap at the time the test was constructed.
Continuity mistake: In the speedboat scene where Dr Schneider rescues Indy and Kazim from the boat that is chopped up by the propeller of a ship, she driving the speedboat with the steering wheel on the right-hand side. Seconds later as she drives the speedboat away, the steering wheel is on the left-hand side, obviously a flipped shot. When the speedboat slows down to allow Kazim to alight at the jetty, Indy is at the wheel which is now back on the right-hand side.
Continuity mistake: In the beginning, when Indy is fighting aboard the Coronado ship, the very first time we see Indy in this scene (before we see him get punched), he is bleeding from the right side of his mouth. Throughout the remainder of the scene, he is bleeding from the left side of his mouth.
Continuity mistake: When Indy is trying to hold Elsa and keep her from falling and she's trying to reach the Grail, you can see her hand coming out of her glove. In the first shot of her hand coming out, it comes almost all the way out. In the next two shots, her hand is about halfway out, then it slips out and she falls.
Continuity mistake: When Sean Connery drops his lighter while trying to burn the ropes, the lid is flipped to the right. When he blows on it the lid then changes position slightly relative to the pattern on the rug, then when the rug catches fire the lid's suddenly flipped completely to the left.
Continuity mistake: After Indiana and the Protector of the Grail escape the boat being chewed up, and the Protector reveals who he is to Indiana, watch his chest area... When Indiana asks "Who are you?" he is looking down at his chest (looking at the tattoo), and when we cut to Kazim you can tell he is holding his shirt open showing Indy the tattoo. Then when we cut to Indy and back to Kazim, his shirt is closed and he then opens it to show Indy the tattoo.
Revealing mistake: When Indy is looking out at the gorge in front of him after spelling out God's name, there's a shot where he looks at the lion's head above him. You can see him from down the corridor, and you can notice as he touches the wall, it moves, showing it is a fake wall.
Other mistake: In the catacombs, Indy flips over the casket with the skeleton and dives underneath together with Elsa. If you watch closely, the skeleton gets trapped inside the casket, however Indy and Elsa are alone inside the casket. If the skeleton had sunken, there wasn't enough time, nor did Elsa or Indy bump into it when they dove underneath.
Continuity mistake: In the boat chase, when the bad guys are using machine guns, in one shot we see Indy's boat in the middle of the canal. In the next shot (close-up) they are very close to a large pile of dirt (or wood chips) and in the next (wide) shot they are in the middle of the canal again.
Add timeJacob La Cour
Continuity mistake: When Indy and his father are being pursued by German soldiers on bikes, right after they break through the barrier, the barrier guard comes out of his post and waves the pursuing German soldiers to slow down in the background. In the next shot he's no longer there, and the barrier's quite far away, then in the following shot he's back, and Indy's not so far from the barrier again.
Continuity mistake: When Indy and the protector of the Grail are in the boat about to be destroyed by the rotors, there are panels on the top of the boat that pop up and are destroyed when the boat is moving backwards into the rotors. In the next shot, they are intact, then in the next shot, they are destroyed again.
Continuity mistake: When Indy comes face-to-face with Hitler he hands over Henry's diary with its black elastic around the back cover, but in the closeup as the signature is being signed the elastic is around the front cover, then it's around the back cover again when Indy takes the diary back.

Visible crew/equipment: After Indy and Henry have escaped from Castle Brunwald, Indy jumps into one of the boats, pulls the motor starter cord and jumps back out, then just as he bends over to release the boat from the piling, right between Indy's legs the black covered arm of a hidden crewmember appears from under the tarp taking hold of the throttle, steering the boat away from the pier.
Continuity mistake: When the Nazi is strangling Indy with the chain, Indy looks down into the porthole of the tank and yells, "Dad!" Before he throws the gun down into the tank Indy's hat comes loose, but when the next shot is back on Indy, and he yells, "Dad! Dad, get out!" now his hat is back to normal.
Continuity mistake: During the boat chase/fight in Venice, the rear of Indy's boat gets shot up and starts smoking and spouting flames and the engine starts chopping. He leaps onto the pursuing boat, fights until that boat is destroyed in the rotors, then leaps with the Grail protector back onto his original boat with Elsa. The boat is now running perfectly.
00:38:50 - 00:39:55
Continuity mistake: When we first see the knight guarding the Grail, his cloak is tied off with a braided rope, which hangs down on his right side. It stays this way until he says "You have chosen wisely," where the rope has somehow shifted to his left side. The rope goes back to normal when the knight waves goodbye at the end of the movie.
01:49:10 - 01:54:05
Factual error: All through the film, SS-Standartenführer Vogel (Michael Byrne) is seen wearing the Iron Cross in second place beside his SA Military Sports Badge. This is totally wrong. As the Iron Cross is a Military Award, it would be worn over or to the right of any other badge on the pocket. Also presuming this is a 1914-18 Iron Cross, he should then be wearing a ribbon bar over his left pocket displaying his WW1 Honor Cross Ribbon along with long service ribbons, etc. American Law specifically allows the accurate wear of uniforms in movies (see http://uscode.house.gov/uscode-cgi/fastweb.exe?getdoc+uscview+t09t12+443+8++%28%29%20%20AN (subsection f)) and there is no reason to believe (without evidence) that German Law forbids the accurate portrayal of uniforms.
Continuity mistake: When the white robed men ambush the Nazis just after they blow up Salah's car, there's a shot over a Nazi's shoulder as he fires at one of the white robed guys running up a hill. The Nazi's machine gun is held straight out and doesn't move but the dust that flies from the squibs suggest that he fired as he moved the gun right to left which he did not do. The odd thing is that AFTER the squibs go off, the Nazi turns his gun to the left.
Continuity mistake: When Indy takes four horses before battling with the tank, three are black and one is bay (brown with black legs, mane and tail). Sallah is riding a chestnut. When they ride to the Grail Temple, there are two black horses and two chestnuts. Where did the second chestnut come from?
01:28:00 - 01:39:25
Revealing mistake: When fire sweeps through the catacombs under the church, you can see that the "rats" are completely fake. At the far left of the screen (widescreen) you can see several fake rats just hanging on the wall and not moving at all. In the "special features" section on the DVD, Steven Spielberg admitted that the rats were fake - he couldn't bring himself to roast live ones so he could not make this scene appear realistic.
Revealing mistake: After Indy jumps onto the tank from the horse there's a shot where he stands up to face the bad guy if you look at the tracks on the sand behind him, they aren't caterpillar tracks but tyre tracks. The reason is that for the close-up shots a fake tank was built on top of a car, a security measure to avoid anyone getting hurt in case they fell off.
Factual error: In the motorbike chase after the rescue of Indy's dad from the castle, you can see how they pass the border between Austria and Germany. The guardhouse is waving the Austrian flag. Austria however ceased to exist as a sovereign state after the annexation by Germany in March 1938. Looking at the weather it rather seems to be spring than winter. Therefore there would no longer be a guard at the border nor a guard house waving the Austrian flag.
Factual error: During the motor boat chase through the canals of Venice, Dr. Schneider pilots the vessel between two ships, one identified as the John W. Mackay of London. Although the Mackay was commissioned in 1922, it was stationed at Halifax, Nova Scotia for service in the North Atlantic. It was deployed for the first time to the Mediterranean in 1942 - four years after the purported time of the movie.
Continuity mistake: In the beginning where Indy is young, he fights some guys on that zoo train. When he's on the crate with the rhino in it, the background changes in each shot. Once there are trees behind and a split of a second later there are rocks, once there's a cliff and once a plain, and it all changes in splits of seconds as they change shots.
Factual error: When Indiana's father uses the plane's gun, he shoots out the tail. This was not actually possible, as the planes had a safety mechanism to stop people doing this. In fact we can see that the Lewis gun he is using is mounted on a Scarff ring, which prevented the trigger of the gun being activated when the barrel was pointed at the aircraft's tail surfaces.
Visible crew/equipment: When Indiana and the Protector of the Grail are fighting in the boat that is about to be chewed up by the giant screw/propeller, when the angle changes to the top point of view, you can see the rope pulling the front of the boat around to position the rear for destruction...
Continuity mistake: At the airport, someone is reading a newspaper. Instead of the year 1938, the date of the newspaper is 1918 (a guess: I think this mistake happened because the art director wrote the date in a rush, stretching the "3" in a way it seemed a "1" when the people of "atrezzo" saw it).
Continuity mistake: Jones Sr. falls on the tank's chain and passes by the turret and by a round rusty thing. When the angle changes, a second before Indy saves him with the whip, you see Sr. has moved half a meter back instead of forward, and is passing by the same elements as before.
Continuity mistake: When the Nazi Colonel discovers Henry Jones sen. aboard the zeppelin, Indy asks him for his flight ticket. In the first shot, Indy is standing right beside the colonel (the camera is behind the colonel and Indy comes in from the right), in the subsequent shot, Indy is standing behind the colonel.
Add timeChristoph Galuschka
Continuity mistake: As Sallah pulls Dr. Jones senior off the tread of the tank, Indy lets go of his whip and turns towards the German colonel and they continue fighting face-to-face. You can see that Indy punches the colonel so that he loses his balance and stumbles backwards. A split second later, the colonel is standing behind Jones with his arm around Indy's neck. They did not have nearly enough time to so radically change positions.
Revealing mistake: When Indy and Kazim are fighting on the the boat as it is being chewed up by the giant propeller, the propeller is more than half way out of the water; if the ship was in dry-dock the smaller boats wouldn't be able to go up to the larger ship, on the other hand if it had run aground it would not be running its engines.
Factual error: Indiana Jones checks his dad's grail diary to find the picture of the stained glass window in the church in Venice. With the book open to that page, the picture is on the left-side page, and under Indy's thumb on the right-side page is a snippet of an article about marriage statistics. The article mentions statistics up to and including the year 1943. Problem is, the movie takes place in 1938.
00:27:00John S Harris
Continuity mistake: When Indy gives his father water from the grail to drink, the grail glows from inside, and the gold inside it is bright and even. But when Indy pours water over the wound, the grail is dark inside and there are dark patches in the gold. Obviously, they had to take the light that made the grail glow out so it wouldn't be seen when Indy pours the water over his father.
Add timeJacob La Cour
Continuity mistake: When Indy meets Hitler, there is a shot over Indy's shoulder that shows his lips are slightly parted (relaxed). Cut to Indy's face and he closes his mouth tightly. In the very next shot, with no elapsed time, we see from Indy's shoulder again that Indy's mouth is relaxed as before.
Factual error: When Indy and Marcus first arrive in Venice on the boat the dock they alight on to has tactile pavers (for the visually impaired) installed on the platform. These weren't invented until 1965, some 25+ years after the scene takes place.
Other mistake: While Indy and Henry are aboard the zeppelin Indy tosses Vogel out the lounge window, and when Vogel shouts up to the departing airship, in the next exterior shot we see the zeppelin airborne against a scenic view. Later, when Indy realises the zeppelin is turning around it cuts to another exterior shot of the airship, and the scenic view is identical to the earlier shot, only it's been flipped. The images of the zeppelin facing two different directions were composited onto the same scenic background.

Continuity mistake: When Sallah rides up to the tank to rescue Henry we see Indy toss the whip over the side of the tank, but after the tank falls over the cliff, when Indy climbs back up then walks over to stand between Henry and Sallah the whip is coiled and back in its place, hanging from his belt. Even Indy can't do that.
01:36:00 - 01:37:40Super Grover
Visible crew/equipment: When Indy tries to reach the Grail his father convinces him to "Let it go" and Henry pulls his son to safety, then in the next wideshot of Indy, Henry, Sallah, and Marcus a crewmember wearing a short sleeved, white shirt and blue pants can be seen at the right side of the screen, just before it cuts to Henry's closeup. This crewmember can be seen again after the closeup of the knight.
Continuity mistake: While Henry and Marcus are being held inside the tank, Indiana rides in circles and baits the tank to ram into one of the cars. In a following shot when we see Vogel walking toward the window inside the tank it's a flipped shot, note everything is backwards. Then two shots later, when Vogel shouts "quick" in German it's another flipped shot, and about five shots after that again flipped.
Revealing mistake: When Young Indy is trapped in the train car with the lion, he tosses up the whip to Fedora, and as he's being pulled up in the interior shot, the stunt double is wearing a glove on his right hand holding what looks like skewered meat to presumably draw the trained lion. He's also wearing a stunt apparatus around his waist above his beaded belt.
Visible crew/equipment: After Young Indy locks the two treasure hunters in the reptile train car he pulls a snake out of his shirt, and just as the third young treasure hunter tackles Indy we can see a crewmember's arm and equipment at the left side of the screen, before it cuts to the long shot.
Continuity mistake: When Indy is rescuing his father from Brunwald castle, he uses his bullwhip to smash through the window of the room his father is kept in...but in the time it took to jump into the room and get smashed over the head by his father, the bullwhip he used would have lost lots of its momentum and it wouldn't be waiting for him to grab it and use it later on the movie.
Continuity mistake: When Indiana pushes the Nazi colonel out of an open window, if you look carefully, the colonel fell a few metres out of the zeppelin before landing on a pile of suitcases, but when the colonel looks up, the zeppelin is several hundred metres above him, in too short a time to ascend that much.
Other mistake: After Young Indy runs out of the cave with the Cross of Coronado, when he whistles for his horse and jumps down, note the horse's facial marking and leg marking. When Indy mounts the horse it's a different horse, note its markings, and as he rides toward the circus train the horse has changed again.
Factual error: When Indy and Marcus fly to Venice, the route map shows them going from New York to Botwood, Newfoundland, then from Botwood to the Azores to the continent. There were two transcontinental air routes at the time across the North Atlantic: one from New Work to Botwood to London, and one from New York to the Azores to the continent, but none from Botwood to the Azores. (http://people.hofstra.edu/geotrans/eng/ch3en/conc3en/earlyairnetworks.html).
Continuity mistake: When the driver of the tank is shot and he changes the direction of where the tank is going, Indiana gets up, with his strap still stuck on the nozzle. However, in the next shot, he's become clear of being stuck. There's no way he could have gotten his strap undone so quickly.
Continuity mistake: Near the end, in the "Leap of Faith" scene, Jones steps off the edge of the abyss and discovers an ingeniously-camouflaged stone bridge. The camera pans to show the camouflage effect from another angle, and it's obvious that the stone bridge is only about one foot thick from one end to the other. Relieved, Jones scampers across to the other side, and the camera cuts again to show that the bridge is now a full three feet thick.
Add timeCharles Austin Miller
Continuity mistake: During the escape from the Nazis the Jones boys pass through a boathouse and Indy sets a small boat loose with the engine running to distract them. When he releases the boat the motor (and boat) is turning to the starboard side (which would turn the boat straight back into the bank), but when the Nazis arrive, the boat is running perfectly straight down the river.
Continuity mistake: After Indy and Elsa exit the catacombs through a sewer and start to run away, a woman in pink turns her head to watch them leave and then turns around to see Kazim's men run after the couple. A frame later, from a new angle, the woman's head is turned 45° facing downwards.
Factual error: In the 'The Last Crusade', the Germans and their lackeys use MP 38 or MP 40 submachine guns extensively. The MP 38 was still a new weapon in 1938, and not around in such large numbers to arm each and every soldier with it (total of 1 million MP38/40's vs. more than 20 million troopers in WW2).
Revealing mistake: When Walter Donovan is dying after drinking from the wrong cup, watch the over-the-shoulder shot where we see his hair grow long suddenly - the shot was filmed in reverse, as the fire coming from the candles/torches behind Elsa is not burning upwards, but appears to be "sucking" back downwards.
Other mistake: When Indy is atop the tank with his father, he is facing his father. Suddenly, they show a close-up of Indy's face, head-on, with the Nazi leader behind him swinging a shovel towards Indy's head in the background. Indy gasps, and ducks. How did Indy see the shovel being swung at his head if it was completely behind him?"
