Hocus Pocus

Question: If the witches were being hung outside the house when Winifred's book showed her how to cast the life spell, where did the black flame candle and its instructions come from?

3

Answer: They were set up, beforehand, just in case. Winnifred knew about the spell, but she didn't memorize the incantation. So she needed the book to see how to cast it.

Question: Throughout the film, everyone says that Binx was trying to prevent the candle from being lit, so why at the end does he thank Max for lighting it, and explain to Emily that he had to wait for the candle to be lit?

Chosen answer: Binx had accepted his fate of being a cat forever so instead, he decided to stop the candle from being lit. It was only near the end of the film that he saw the death of the witches broke his curse.

Question: While at the high school, after the witches arrive, Max says "This is your host, Boris Karloff Jr." Is that a real person or a name made up for the movie? And with the witches thought to be burned alive, why did Binx snap at Allison and Max for opening the book. With the witches gone, he wouldn't have anything to worry about, right?

Answer: Boris Karloff was a real actor who is mostly famous for playing Frankenstein and The Mummy in the 1930's. He had many other roles in classic horror films of that era.The young host is naming himself after the actor. Binx may have been concerned that the witches were not truly gone, and therefore wanted to exert some caution. His concern was warranted.

Question: Why did Alison give Max his phone number back?

1

Answer: It was her way of saying "No" to any future invites from Max. Also, she wanted the turndown to send a message to Max that it was final, and that way was to return the phone number.

Question: If Binx could talk the moment he became a cat, why didn't he talk to his dad?

Answer: Notice that Max, Dani and Allison can only understand Binx after Max lights the black flame candle. Max is fulfilling a centuries-old prophecy and therefore is becoming part of the same magic that was used to curse Binx. Binx does try to talk to his father right after the Sanderson sisters are hung, but it only comes out as meows.

5

Answer: Back in the 1600s in Salem, cats were considered to be servants of witches and were killed if caught. If Binx tried to talk to his dad, his dad would most likely believe that the cat was possessed by a demon and would have definitely killed him, not knowing that he had killed his own son.

2

But his dad couldn't have killed him because of the immortality curse.

Answer: It's never really explained and most likely a missing plot hole. Binx might have felt guilty for nor being able to rescue his sister.

Continuity mistake: When Max and Allison rescue Dani from the witches' house, they turn on the car lights to trick the witches into thinking it is daylight. After they get in the car and drive off, the same light that was supposed to have come from the headlight is still shining after they have left.
