Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Jack removes the beating heart from the chest, the way the heart is positioned in his hand changes between shots - note the large arteries. (01:51:00)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: When Jack beheads the pirate and then when the pirate body searches for its head as Jack unlocks the chest, the plant debris appear and disappear in Jack's hair. (01:51:10)

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest mistake picture

Continuity mistake: This occurs during and after the scene where Jack empties the sand out of the jar and puts the heart inside. After replacing most of the sand, in the later shots the amount of sand in the jar keeps changing. Later in the scene on the Black Pearl, the amount of sand changes from shot-to-shot up until the jar is dropped and breaks. (01:51:40)

Continuity mistake: On the water wheel, the characteristics (such as shape and size) and position of the hole Jack created keeps changing, once Jack is free of the wheel. (01:52:15)

Continuity mistake: When the huge water wheel rolls to the beach and falls on its side, it falls with the broken, wide, wood side of the axle facing up. However, as Will and Norrington climb out, inexplicably it's the slim side of the water wheel's axle that is now facing up. But in a following shot, it is the other way round again. (01:52:22)

Continuity mistake: When Jack is snatched up by the water wheel, as he stands in the open grave, he gets stuck in the wood blade positioned exactly between two wheel spokes. When the key falls from his neck there is a close-up of it getting caught on the nail. In the next shot, Jack is still trapped in the wheel, only this time he is stuck in the wood blade directly beside one of the wheel spokes. (01:52:30)

Continuity mistake: When the water wheel rolls away from the camera, just as Jack falls out after hitting his head, the thin part of the axle is missing on the left, though at this angle it should be seen. Both sides of the axle are intact in following shots. Note, when the wheel rolls onto the beach, before it falls over, it is shown at the very same angle as the earlier shot. (01:52:30 - 01:56:30)

Plot hole: There are six metal bars mounted around the circumference of the water wheel's axle. In the wheel's interior, when Jack frees himself he lands on his feet, begins to run and promptly hits his head on one of those mounted axle bars, then falls out. Moments later, when Jack returns and runs in the wheel, he is shorter (way more than a foot) than all six of the mounted axle bars spinning with the water wheel, which would make that previous shot impossible, however humorous it is. (01:52:40 - 01:53:55)

Continuity mistake: When the water wheel begins to roll, with Norrington and Will atop and then snatches up Jack, its blades (buckets on the outside rim) and two sides of the axle face a specific direction as it gains speed. Now compare the following two shots, as the water wheel rolls away from the camera: When the wheel rolls, just as Jack falls out, after hitting his head on the bar. Then later on the beach, as Elizabeth watches, just as the wheel rolls and falls over in the close-up, the wheel is actually rolling in the opposite direction - just note its blades. Also note the bizarre change of its axle's wide and narrow sides. (01:52:40 - 01:56:50)

Plot hole: In a close-up, just as Jack is freed from the hole in the water wheel, we see the axle's circular wood frame with its spinning bars, above and behind him, as he runs the wheel. At the end of this close-up, Jack's happy facial expression gives way to a look of dread, as he supposedly sees an approaching metal bar about to make contact with his forehead. This is impossible, since all bars are spinning behind him. After a close-up of the actual bar, in the next shot as Jack's forehead makes contact, he stands further back and is now at the center of the circular wood frame, so as to be in perfect alignment with those spinning bars. Continuity mistake: When Elizabeth, Pintel and Ragetti fight Jones's crew, Ragetti tosses Elizabeth the sword which she catches in her left hand, as she holds another sword in her right hand. She then tosses the sword from her right hand to Pintel, as she holds the other sword in her left hand. Next shot, when Pintel catches it, the sword in her left hand has disappeared - note her empty open hand, only to reappear in the next shot. (01:54:20)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: When Norrington runs with the chest, he falls and his sword ends up beside shell-head when he also falls. After the quick shot of his headless body running with the chest, in the next close-up the sword is farther away from shell-head, just before his crab-like legs appear. (01:54:40)

Factual error: The helmsmen on the ships always spin the wheel in the direction that they wish to turn. However, in the days of sail the wheel had to be spun in the opposite direction from the direction of turn. (01:56:00)

Continuity mistake: When the Flying Dutchman attacks the Pearl the cannon flies through the rear windows and slams into the captain's stateroom doors, leaving a debris laden door jamb. However, in the next shot when Pintel and Ragetti peer in, the door jamb is intact. (01:56:20)

Continuity mistake: When everyone is fighting on Isle Cruses, Jack is standing behind Will and he hits Will in the head with an oar. In the shot right after that, Jack is no longer standing behind Will. Will is reacting to getting hit so you know it was right after, and Jack wouldn't have time to move. (01:58:15)

Continuity mistake: When trying to flee, Norrington falls and drops his sword and the chest. As he crawls in the first shot, note the sword's hilt and particularly the hand guard, with its wide part facing up. In the next shot the direction of the hand guard has changed, with its wide part now facing the ground (this has nothing to do with camera angle). (01:58:45)

Continuity mistake: Aboard the Pearl, after Will orders the rum to be loaded, and Gibbs responds, "Aye, the rum too," the cloth round Gibbs's neck has the loop to his right, but in previous and following shots it's actually "tied" round his neck the opposite way, with the loop to his left. Continuity mistake: During the Kraken attack on the Pearl, Jack sneaks away in the long boat at the Pearl's port side. However, when Elizabeth walks over to the deck rail, sees Jack and says, "Oh, you coward!" she is actually standing at the Pearl's starboard side, and it would be quite impossible to see Jack. Take note of the rail rigging and mast. (02:01:20)

Continuity mistake: During the second attack on the Pearl, the Kraken visibly destroys the ladder from the 2nd deck to the top deck. Later, after the Kraken has been blown up, Cotton and Gibbs climb up the same ladder. (02:02:00)

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Jack sneaks away on the long boat, during the Kraken attack on the Pearl, there is a close-up of Jack looking back at the land, then picking up and dramatically opening the compass. However, in the previous shot showing the Pearl, the compass is actually seen at the bottom of the shot - already being held open. (02:02:45)

Trivia: The incredibly short shot of Tortuga when it is first shown (with the man being dunked and such) was actually filmed on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disneyland. While the ride was shut down for remodeling, the crew actually went there and shot the scene with a mixture of live actors and existing animatronic props. If you look closely, many of the "actors" can be seen as fake. (01:04:50)

Question: When Jack asks for Tia Dalma's help, she asks him what he brought for her. Jack then lifts the cage containing the monkey and shoots it. Jack then says, "An undead monkey". How is it possible for the monkey to be undead, wasn't the curse on the Black Pearl lifted?

Answer: There is a scene after the credits of "The Curse of the Black Pearl": the monkey got back to the cave and took a coin. That way he turned undead again.
