The Italian Job

Factual error: The safe at the end is a very high end model with a glass relocker if you break the pane. However, in this type of safe, as an extra security measure, the glass is a small pane put somewhere randomly in the door by the safe door assembler, not one large pane as depicted in the movie.

Suggested correction: The glass relocker is located in an area that is vulnerable to attack. In this case, the entire area around the dial is vulnerable to attack as a drill would allow access to the inner mechanism. It would not make sense to be in a random spot as you could figure out where the glass is with special depth gauge and acoustic devices.

The original mistake is correct. The glass relocker is installed in a random spot by the person putting it in. This is an extra security measure so that an attacker won't know where it is. The glass is highly sensitive and will crack from drilling vibrations even if it is not penetrated. With those safes, you even have to be careful not to slam the door shut so you don't break the glass.

Factual error: When Charlie hands off the case of gold at the end, he easily spins it around as if it's empty. Bars of gold aren't light by any means.

Suggested correction: When they put the gold into the Minis, we only see silver metal boxes in the trunks, not the black one Charlie hands over to the Ukrainian. Also the time span between getting on the train and the confrontation with Steve was too short to put the barrels into the black box. It's more likely that the box is full of money and was prepared before the Minis entered the subway system.

Not likely. Gold would be worth more than cash in that box. And gold would make more sense as then they don't have to carry cash and take up space in the minis.

Character mistake: When the helicopter's pilot says "Zorro-Mike" it should be "Zulu-Mike" (01:20:15)

Continuity mistake: After the heist, the blue Mini is seen to have a dent in the rear wing. Throughout the chase, up to when the helicopter hits the blue Mini, the dent changes size constantly.

Continuity mistake: When Charlie is a kid, a kid knocks another kid's book out of his hands. The book hits the lockers and one of the lockers swings open. When it cuts, the locker is closed again. (00:31:20)

Continuity mistake: When Charlie and Stella are talking in Stella's hotel room in Hollywood, a strand of her hair goes from over her head to hanging beside her face as the shot cuts to behind her. When it cuts to her face, the strand is over her head again, though she didn't touch her hair.

Other mistake: When Charlize Theron is in her hotel room, Mark Wahlberg knocks on the door and walks right in without either waiting for her to open the door and without a key (or lockpick) apparent in his hand. Most, if not all hotel room doors lock automatically and cannot be left unlocked. Even the best lockpicker would take a few seconds to get it open.

Other mistake: Just as the minis are finishing loading up the gold from the truck, there is a shot of at least 40 gold bars still left in the truck (3 rows of 13 bricks and at least 1 single brick on top. We are given the numbers by Charlie as he relays it to Lyle to work out the value). Then 10 seconds later, we are shown the minis leaving, having got all the bricks, packed up and started the engines. There is no way they could move 40 bricks and pack up in less than 10 seconds.

Question: How much did Mini Cooper give to the Italian Job for the publicity in the movie? The movie casts a very good light on the car.

Answer: The Mini Cooper for the movie was also made as an electric car for the chase scenes in the tunnel because gas-powered cars were not allowed to be used in the tunnels. I heard that from the director's cut.

Answer: While the exact amount of money is hard to find, the MINIs used in the 2003 movie are a direct homage to the Minis used in the 1960s movie, which is the main reason they are used. MINI (the company owned by BMW, as opposed to the company which owned Mini by Austin and Morris in the 60s) was happy to have the remake use MINI as a direct link to change the perception of it from a "girly" type car, to a more sporty one.
