Continuity mistake: In a close up of the tar wagons before James crashes into them, James disappears.
Visible crew/equipment: When James crashes into the tar wagons, a crew member's finger can be seen pushing him.
Character mistake: The narrator says that James ran into two tar wagons, but he ran into four. Two is the amount of tar wagons that derailed.
Continuity mistake: James leaves Elsbridge Station with the brake coach at the rear. When James arrives at Knapford Station, the brake coach is in the middle.
Other mistake: James passes a green signal, but there are tar wagons ahead.
Revealing mistake: When Gordon is being pulled from the pond, in the close up scene of Gordon reversing up the sleeper bed, the front of his buffer beam/running board catches on the upright stake to the right hand side of the worker figure, pulling it back before it rights itself. Other mistake: At the start Gordon's buffers are crooked.
Revealing mistake: When Gordon falls into the ditch, wires under his cab are visible.
Revealing mistake: When the boys sing, the camera shakes.
Revealing mistake: When Gordon puffs into the ditch his face looks wonky and wires are visibly attached to his cab.
Continuity mistake: The sign says: "Danger - engines must not pass this board." When Thomas passes it, "board" is replaced with "point."
Continuity mistake: Gordon's connecting rods change position after he pulls Thomas out of the mine.
Other mistake: When Thomas shunts Annie and Clarabel his eyes look wonky and Annie and Clarabel are missing their names.
Answer: Butch the breakdown truck must have pulled Gordon's tender all the way up the rails so the breakdown train can reach it and also Butch helped to get Gordon close to the winch.
