Dawson's Creek

Valentine's Day Massacre - S3-E14

Revealing mistake: When Jen goes to visit Henry at the hospital, he is eating a small individual-sized Jello. There is another identical Jello on the same tray, in front of Jen when she sits down to talk to Henry. You can see that the corner of the Jello lid has already been pulled up rather noticeably. This is probably to make it easier for Michelle Williams, the actress to be able to open the Jello quickly during her scene.

All Good Things... (1) - S6-E23

Continuity mistake: When Joey and Pacey are standing in his restaurant, watching Dawson and the others come there is a shot of Joey with her hair tucked behind her right ear. But in the next shot of her, a close-up, she suddenly has all her hair pulled forward around her face. Her arms haven't moved between shots. (00:23:15)

The Graduate - S4-E22

Revealing mistake: When Doug stops Pacey on the street to talk to him, Pacey turns to face Doug (and the camera). You can see at this point, the microphone sticking out from Pacey's upper shirt. (00:04:25)

Cinderella Story - S3-E17

Continuity mistake: When Pacey is driving Joey back from Boston in the morning, they start talking about what happened. Every shot of Pacey or Joey from either side shows a heavily wooded forest (mostly pine trees it looks like) in the background. But when Pacey abruptly veers off the road to the right and parks; suddenly the landscape on Joey's side is barren with a huge lake, and no forest or trees except a few they just passed on the curve. The pine tree footage was probably added in to make Wilmington, NC look more like Capeside, Mass.

The Longest Day - S3-E20

Visible crew/equipment: When Joey is in Dawson's room, trying to tell him about her relationship with Pacey, she can't find the words and turns to leave. As she bends over to climb back out of his bedroom window, you can suddenly see a microphone wire protruding from the back of her white shirt. It's a visible vertical line, and as she continues to climb out the window, you can see that there is no mike pack on her lower back. (00:19:05)

Coming Home - S4-E1

Visible crew/equipment: In the very beginning, when Joey and Pacey are on the boat Coming Home, there are a few closeups of Pacey that show a small microphone jutting out the material of his shirt, right under his collar. (00:01:05)

The Longest Day - S3-E20

Factual error: In the second segment of this episode, there is a scene where Joey bumps into Dawson on a street corner after she has just left the library. As they are talking, there suddenly appears in front of them a large square stone monument which describes the 'North Carolina' battleship. The 'North Carolina' is a large battleship that is permanently stationed at the pier in Wilmington, NC where the show is really filmed. They had to shoot around this large ship constantly, being careful not to let it show as they are supposed to be in Capeside, MA. However in this scene, they accidentally filmed right in front of the large square monument which shows several lines of writing. On screen you can read: "On the west side of the river a little south of the causeway was Beery's Shipyard, where the Confederate ironclad North Carolina." This is apparently in reference to the battle ship 'North Carolina' which is stationed nearby in their location of Wilmington, NC not MA. Oops. (00:16:25)

Future Tense - S4-E4

Continuity mistake: When Jen is helping drunk Joey down from her seat on the dock, in some shots Jen is holding her hand to help her down, and in other shots she has her hand around Joey's waist.

Coming Home - S4-E1

Continuity mistake: When Joey and Pacey are on the boat Coming Home, look closely at Pacey's hair under the cap he is wearing. It is longer/thicker hair, and appears to be layered somewhat on the sides and back of the neck. A little later when Joey and Pacey have docked in Capeside and are getting off the boat, Pacey's hair is suddenly cut very short/close to the head, and does not look like it did under the cap on the boat. (00:00:50 - 00:05:05)

Promicide - S4-E20

Audio problem: When Dawson's father hands the baby to Joey, so he can take a picture of her and Gretchen before the Prom, you can hear a noticable "Ahhhhhh" in a female voice from the background, that sounds very much like Dawson's mother. But this wouldn't make sense, as Gail had just gone off to find her shears and cut roses for the corsages.

Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road - S6-E21

Plot hole: In the beginning of the episode, Joey and Audrey are talking in their dorm room. Audrey makes a comment that "Our time in this particular room is over". They have been in the same dorm room (27) for two years now, their Freshman and Sophomore years at Worthington. They still have 2 more years to go. What would make Audrey think that they would suddenly have to change dorm rooms when they've had the same room the entire time? Or that they wouldn't still be roommates the next academic year at Worthington? Audrey is staying to take Summer School classes so she doesn't have to leave the University. (00:08:40)

Coming Home - S4-E1

Deliberate mistake: This scene between Dawson and Jen in his 'dark room' was shot in a distinctive red light. However, in reality there was no red light during filming, the effect was added later during post-production. (00:19:25)

Cigarette Burns - S5-E18

Revealing mistake: When Pacey and Audrey are in bed at Pacey's boss' house, there is a shot where Pacey is lying back down beside Audrey. He appears to be wearing a tank-top style t-shirt, and loose boxers. But you can see that he is actually wearing tighter white briefs UNDER the boxers, obviously so as not to be too revealing. Therefore the boxers aren't really his underwear. (00:06:10)

Everything Put Together Falls Apart - S6-E9

Plot hole: When Pacey first finds Emma in the bathroom cleaning the toilet, she makes a point of mentioning that 'she has band practice in an hour'. But right after they 'strike a deal' and Pacey agrees to her terms for the party, Emma suddenly announces that 'she is off to band practice'. Only a few minutes have passed, so it seems strange Emma would suddenly be going to a band practice that doesn't actually start for another hour.

Falling Down - S4-E2

Plot hole: When Dawson goes over to Joey's house to talk to her about Pacey's school problems, he mentions that Pacey had missed that entire day of school. Joey apparently didn't know this, as she is surprised at the news. Since Joey and Pacey are closely involved - wouldn't she have noticed his absence at school that day already? Surely she would have noticed Pacey missing for an entire day of school.

The Kids Are Alright (1) - S6-E1

Continuity mistake: At the very end, Dawson and Joey are kissing and they lay back on her bed. The snowglobe Dawson has just given her sits on the table next to her bed, and suddenly the snow inside it is drifting vertically down as if someone has just shaken it. But Joey and Dawson are busy, and neither one has touched it. Only a strong shaking could produce that type of snowfall, not just something bumping the table. (00:43:05)

A Family Way - S4-E5

Revealing mistake: During the scene when Dawson and Gretchen are talking on the bridge, two couples walk by in the background. An older couple passes from left to right, and a younger couple walks from right to left. The younger couple is a woman with blonde, curly hair wearing a green top and beige/white skirt, and a guy wearing a green or blue top and white pants. During the same scene, the same younger couple again walks by in the background from right to left two more times. Then the older couple walks by again from left to right. Then one final time, the younger couple walks by yet again for a fourth time from right to left. Guess they were using the extras a lot that day. (00:27:15 - 00:28:50)

Coming Home - S4-E1

Continuity mistake: When Joey and Pacey are talking on the dock just after arriving back in Capeside, Joey's hair changes instantly from being swept behind her right shoulder and behind her back, to sitting in front of both shoulders.

None of the Above - S3-E3

Continuity mistake: When Andie is doing sit-ups in the morning and practicing for the PSAT, she is listening to the news on TV. The news anchor mentions the author of the popular book "Cracking the PSAT". She says 'PSAT' not 'SAT'. But Andie immediately says something like "Way ahead of you", and holds up her copy of the book. On the cover, it says "Cracking the SAT", not 'PSAT'.

Falling Down - S4-E2

Plot hole: Mrs. Valentine almost fires Joey, after discovering that she lied about knowing the Owens. Drue steps in and saves Joey's job by claiming he did see the Owen boy. But Joey keeps her job throughout the rest of that season. Since the Owens were said to be in Paris only until the 1st of the year - wouldn't Mrs. Valentine have found that Joey lied about knowing them as soon as they returned to Capeside? Surely Mrs. Valentine would have mentioned Joey to the Owens; thinking she was their good friend, and because she was new on staff at the Country Club they were members of the board for. And once she found out Joey had indeed lied, why did she not fire her at that point?

Jen: Do you remember when you were ten and your Mom wouldn't get you that candy bar that you really, really wanted? Didn't you ever just... Swipe it?
Dawson: No.

Parental Discretion Advised - S2-E22

Trivia: Paul Stupin mentions this true story while discussing the show during the narrative for this episode. Once when Joshua Jackson (who played Pacey) was out swimming at night, there was a girl who was caught in some currents. He jumped in the water, swam out and brought the girl to safety. Joshua made the local newspapers as a "hero", and was known around Wilmington as 'the guy who saved the drowning girl'. The show also had a big ceremony on the set, where they gave Joshua a life preserver in honor of his heroic deeds. (00:06:10)

Show generally

Question: Jack and Andie are brother and sister in the same grade...but does the show ever explain how that came to be? Are they twins or was Andie moved up because she is so smart?

Answer: It's only explained once in the series. Jack says to Andie "I tried to start kindergarten without you", meaning Andie was smart enough to start school early.

Answer: They are not twins (Jack is older than Andie). It is possible due to when birthdays fall in the school calender for non-twin siblings to end up in the same grade. Say that you have to be 5 on Sept 1 to start Kindergarten, you are born on Sept 2, 2000 and your little sister on Aug 30, 2001. Sept 1, 2005, you are 4 years and 364 days and can't start. So Sept 1, 2006, you are 5 years and 364 days and your sister is 5 years and 1 day, and, voila!, you're both in the same grade.

Answer: The writers have said they are not twins and Jack is older. Although they were both born in 1983. In some states, like Massachusetts, it's a district decision when a child under 6-8 can start kindergarten, so there's no age deadline. In January 1988, Jack and Andie would both be 4, turning 5, and the district then allowed Andie to start kindergarten with her brother. It has nothing to do with Andie being smarter or moved up a grade, a point she alludes to in response to Jack saying he tried to start kindergarten without her (s04e04). As a side note, there was talk among the writers about whether to make Jack older or younger and they ultimately decided to make him older. The writers put in an inside joke about that when Andie says she is "definitely the older sibling in this relationship" (s04e04). It's also an inside joke to the fact that Meredith Monroe (Andie) was almost 2.5 years older than Kerr Smith (Jack). Monroe was 18, turning 19, in 1988.
