Trivia: As Newkirk does his impressions, he says "Sprechen Sie Deutsch?, Ja! Then droppen sie dead." This joke was used in "Stalag 17", the 1953 movie about POWs in a German prison camp. The exchange was between Harry Shapiro and their guard, Johann Sebastian Schultz.

Factual error: After Carter realises Hogan got the envelope off so fast, Newkirk says "Speedy Gonzales." 'Hogan's Heroes' was supposed to take place from 1942 to the end of the war. Speedy Gonzales first appeared in "Cat Tails for Two" in 1953.

Revealing mistake: In the close ups, Professor Bauer's spectacles do not have lenses.
Chosen answer: It was neither of those. In earlier TV shows, it was typical that each episode was a self-contained story, and the plots and non-regular characters were rarely carried over from previous shows to the next. Any problems or situations were resolved at the end, even if some plot threads were illogically left unexplained. This allowed episodes to be aired in any random order. Today's TV series usually have ongoing linear timelines and continuous plots that are played out over multiple seasons.
