Other mistake: When Skinner calls his lawyer he never dials the phone.
Ratatouille (2007)
Directed by: Brad Bird, Jan Pinkava
Starring: Ian Holm, Peter O'Toole, Brian Dennehy, Janeane Garofalo, John Ratzenberger, Patton Oswalt, Lou Romano
Continuity mistake: When Remy and Emile are cooking the mushroom on the roof, notice that the mushroom is skewered on the antenna. When Remy and Emile are hit by lightning and sent careening off the roof, the mushroom is instantly on a stick in Remy's hand, instead of the antenna. It could've been sent flying by the lightning bolt, but even if it was, there was no stick in the previous shot for it to have ended up on. (00:07:50)
Continuity mistake: In the beginning of the movie when the crazy lady goes after Remy and Emile with the shotgun, she fires three shots at them: two in the wall and one towards the ceiling when Emile is crossing the banister. After Emile crosses the banister, look at the ceiling around the chandelier in the next shot. There are 4 shotgun holes in the ceiling.
Trivia: Near the beginning, when Remy is in the sewers and begins to make his way up to the skyline of Paris, he is startled by a barking dog in one of the apartments. If you pause and look at the silhouette of the dog, it greatly resembles Dug the dog, from the 2009 Disney/Pixar release Up - another precursory nod to an upcoming movie by Pixar. (00:16:35)
Trivia: The wine that Anton Ego requests at dinner is Cheval Blanc, one of the best wines in the world. It is one of only two to receive the highest rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) status in the Classification of Saint-Émilion wine of 1955, along with Château Ausone.
Trivia: When Skinner stops chasing Remy, a mime artist is visible in the background. This man is none other than Bomb Voyage, a character from The Incredibles, Pixar's previous production. (01:17:30)
Emile: W-w-wait. You read?
Remy: Well, not excessively.
Emile: Oh, man. Does dad know?
Remy: You could fill a book - a lot of books - with things Dad doesn't know. And they have. Which is why I read. Which is also our secret.
Emile: I don't like secrets. All this cooking and-and reading and TV-watching, while we read and cook. It's like you're involving me in crime and I let you. Why do I let you?
Question: When Remy is stuck in a cage, chef Gusteau tells Remy he never did. Remy never did what?
Answer: Remy tells the imaginary Gusteau that he's given up, and Gusteau replies that Remy is only as free as he imagines himself to be. Remy counters that he's "sick of pretending" to be a rat for his father and to be a human through Linguini. He then adds that he even pretends Gusteau actually exists, just so he can have somebody to talk to, and that all of Gusteau's responses are what he himself already knows to be true. So when Remy asks, "Why do I need to pretend?" that's when Gusteau tells him, "But you don't Remy. You never did." Which basically means Remy is both a rat, and an extraordinary cook.
Question: Does anyone know anything about the theory that chefs hats represents the number of ways that they know how to prepare eggs? If this is correct, then why is Linguini allowed to wear a chef's hat when he, in fact, isn't one? Wouldn't he be wearing a different hat?
Chosen answer: This is a legend, which states that the number of pleats on a chef's hat (or toque) represents the number of ways that they know how to prepare an egg. There's certainly no evidence that it's actually true - it would be highly impractical if it were, requiring a chef to get a replacement every time they learned a new method. Regardless, many toques are made with exactly 100 pleats, supposedly based on the idea that there are 100 ways to prepare an egg, however, chefs wear them regardless of their culinary skill in that department.
