Continuity mistake: In the beginning of the film when "Edgar" kills the exterminator, the exterminator's truck has a small almost unnoticeable plastic roach decoration on top. Yet during the rest of the movie the roach is huge and it sticks up away from the vehicle. (00:22:30 - 00:33:20)
Continuity mistake: When the cat in on the table in the diner, the word "ORION" on the cat's collar is in normal capitalized block lettering. But when the cat is on the table in the morgue, the word "ORION" is in calligraphy. Also, the colour of the cat's collar seems to change between these two points. (00:42:40 - 01:08:15)
Factual error: When showing Orion's Belt on the screen the stars Alnitak and Mintaka are the wrong way round.
Continuity mistake: In the beginning, when K shoots Mikey, one of the cops gets covered with blue slime all over his face and hat. Watch the right side of the hat: The length of the slime differs between the front and back shots. It's more seen when the scene is about to end and the slime starts to fall down in the front shot, but stays still in the back one. (00:07:25)
Continuity mistake: When Will Smith and the other recruits are taking their written tests, the white table first appears to be situated between the second and third men from the left. When Smith goes to the table to pull it across the room, it is much further to the right of the scene. (00:24:25 - 00:26:35)
Revealing mistake: When K and J buy the "hotsheets" (newspapers) to look for information, the clerk who K gives the money to briefly looks at the camera. (00:44:00)
Other mistake: There is a mistake in the French subtitle translation. In the diner when the cook asks Edgar the Bug, "where's Ivan?" Edgar responds, "[I] gave him a break". The translator writing the subtitles must have thought he was saying "GIVE him a break" because the subtitle reads, "laisse-le tranquille" which means, "leave him alone". (00:42:10)
Other mistake: When K is searching for his wife on the computer, the zoom in highlight boxes don't match the videos.
Continuity mistake: After Kay neuralizes Jay the first time, Jay 'wakes' up in a restaurant and Kay hands Jay a card. He tells him to report to that location. The address can be seen written on the back on the bottom edge of the card. Jay flips the card over to read the address and it's still on the bottom edge of the card. When flipped, the address should now be on the top edge of the card. (00:22:00)
Continuity mistake: When J is trapped by a tentacle of the alien woman in the car, the first seconds of him being dragged up and down he casts no shadow on the ground. Later on when the tentacle is extended he does cast a small shadow. (00:44:10)
Revealing mistake: In the scene after J shoots the exterminator van off of the tow truck he shoots again. When the camera clips to the tow truck driving away, you can see the smoke generators emitting smoke from the curb. (01:03:50)
Other mistake: When the two men are in the diner before they get killed by Edgar the bug, the subtitle reads, "Sure. I ordered you some Pirogi". The correct spelling is Pierogi. (00:42:00)
Other mistake: Soon after Jay pushes the little red button on the Ford POS, Kay inserts an eight track cassette. If you look at the eight track player, you can read "Select". The car is upside down at this point, but the word "Select" on the player, as well as the title of the cassette, "Elvis 'Promised Land'" are both right-side up. This means that, if the car were right-side up, the text would be upside down, and, in turn, the entire cassette player would be upside down. It is clear that this mistake was made by not paying attention to the orientation of the car as the scene was shot. It is also clear that the shot is done with the camera right-side up since Kay is in the driver's seat, which, right-side up, would be on the left, but since the car is upside down, he's on the right, which is seen when he inserts the tape. (01:14:20)
Continuity mistake: When Zed sends Kay and Jay out on Kay's first mission, Reggie's unauthorised departure from Manhattan, Tommy Lee Jones legs cross and uncross from shot to shot. (00:39:25)
Other mistake: At the very beginning, when K disintegrates the alien Mikey, an MIB cover-up team arrives on the scene and approaches K at a distance of about ten meters (roughly 30 feet) ; whereupon K instructs them: "Give me a splay burn around the perimeter with holes at forty, sixty and eighty meters from right here! Thank you!" The team members disperse a scant few steps and use their flamethrowers and extinguishers on the cacti and undergrowth in the immediate area for five seconds. However, the distances K describes (forty, sixty, and eighty meters) would require the team laboriously dispersing hundreds of feet into the desert. But five seconds later, they're still only about 30 feet away from K when he says, "That's good! Thank you!" (00:07:55)
Continuity mistake: When the Mexican alien is running away, the whole scene is all wrong: He runs for a long time and passes by many bushes and cacti, but when K takes out his gun, the alien is just 10 meters away. Plus, from the POV angle, he passes by the cactus to the left of the guard twice. (00:06:50)
Continuity mistake: The MIB applicants are all sitting in the testing room and Zed talks about how they are all the best of the best of the best like, "Rangers, Navy SEALs, NYPD". The only sailor sitting in the room is not a SEAL, he's EOD. You can tell because he is not wearing the Special Warfare badge on his uniform, he's wearing the badge for Explosive Ordnance Disposal. (00:24:35 - 00:27:30)
Continuity mistake: When J and K are shooting their guns at the space ship toward the end, if you look carefully, you can see the spark that ignites their guns to have the fire come out of the barrel. (01:20:25)
Other mistake: Jensen (U.S. Army West Point Officer) addresses himself as a Second Lieutenant, but upon closer inspection of his rank (bars on his shoulders), they are Silver. Silver bars indicate a 1st Lieutenant, Gold indicates a 2nd.
Continuity mistake: Before Kay erases the memories of the border patrol cops, he holds the neuralizer with his left hand while adjusting its knobs with his right hand. In the next shot, he's holding the neuralizer with his right hand.
Answer: The MIB - or K specifically - had already erased the memories of all the police that were involved to cover up the alien sighting. It stands to reason therefore that theyd already have a cover story in place - that is the report that the captain is reading, and for which he congratualtes J.
