The Graduate

Continuity mistake: Before Mr. Braddock introduces Benjamin at his birthday party we get a good look at the lawn chairs on the left of the screen and they're all in the shade. Several shots later when Benjamin finally comes out in his Scuba gear the lawn chairs are in the sunlight. (00:21:55)

????

Continuity mistake: Benjamin says, "I'm going home now" and the red and white plastic ornament above Elaine's bed is casting a shadow on the large "R" behind her head board. In the next shot the lighting is different and there is no shadow. (00:14:50)

????

Continuity mistake: The two large black liquor bottles that we saw on the left of Mrs. Robinson's bar have been moved several feet to the right as Mr. Robinson pours Benjamin a nightcap. (00:17:55)

????

Continuity mistake: Mr. Robinson pours Benjamin a scotch and puts the large black liquor bottle back down facing outward the same way as the other one. As Mr. Robinson hands him his drink Benjamin says, "thank you, thank you very much" and if you look closely at the label the black bottle of scotch has been rotated 90 degrees to the left and is no longer facing them. (00:18:00)

????

Continuity mistake: Mr. McGuire asks to speak to Benjamin and takes him through the kitchen where some other people are talking with drinks in their hands. The woman kisses him on the cheek and the man puts his arm around his back but in the next shot they're not even close to him. (00:05:30)

????

Continuity mistake: Mrs. Robinson barges into Benjamin's room thinking it's the bathroom and the door is touching the wall behind it. In the next shot the door has been moved out about eight inches from the wall behind it. (00:07:05)

????

Continuity mistake: Mr. Robinson leaves Benjamin's apartment and calls him filth and scum as Mr. McCleery the landlord sits at the top of the steps listening. The painting on the wall to the left of the steps is not in direct light but in the next shot when Benjamin walks by the lighting has changed and a dark shadow cast by the frame against the wall is visible. (01:32:50)

????

Continuity mistake: Mrs. Robinson stands behind the bar and asks Benjamin, "What do you drink?" and you can see the ashtray next to the two black liquor bottles. In this shot there's nothing in it but a few seconds later as she sits in front of the bar it's full of cigarette butts. (00:10:20)

????

Continuity mistake: Benjamin and his mother have a conversation in the bathroom as he's shaving and he cuts his thumb on the razor. If you look closely the part of his thumb that's cut is nowhere near the razor, only his thumbnail is. (00:45:10)

????

Continuity mistake: Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson have a rendezvous and while they're in bed in the dark he tries to get her to talk about her life and her husband. If you look closely after she turns the light back on the drapes on the window behind the lamp in the rear of the room have been rearranged without anyone going near them. This happens a couple of times throughout the scene. (00:48:00)

????

Continuity mistake: Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson have a rendezvous and while they're in bed he tries to get her to talk about her life and her husband. If you look closely at the top of the nightstand to her right there's only a pack of cigarettes and the switch to turn off the lamp. They speak in the dark for a few seconds that she turns the light back on and the nightstand is full of all sorts of other stuff that wasn't there before. (00:46:15)

????

Continuity mistake: Benjamin brings up Mrs. Robinson's purse who says, "Put it in Elaine's room, where we were". He proceeds to put it next to a vase on the first shelf to the right of her picture. We've seen this shelf a few seconds before and all that was there was a cup and a pink basket that are now gone. (00:16:00)

????

Factual error: There is a scene with Benjamin Braddock going to Berkeley, but his car is driving on the upper deck of Bay Bridge which only goes in the direction of San Francisco.

Trivia: A change from the theatrical re-release for the 25th anniversary and the video release. In the first Taft Hotel bedroom scene, a nervous Ben asks Mrs. Robinson if she would like "Wood or Wire [hanger]?" In the theater, her response was, "wood." Which led to the wonderful pratfall of Ben trying to take the wood one, which wouldn't come off. But it was changed in the 25th anniversary video release and her response was, "Either one would be fine."
