Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Continuity mistake: When Jack first walks into the blacksmith shop, standing at the doorway he looks around. The grindstone is seen in the distance and there is NO sword leaning on it. Then Will says, "You threatened Miss Swann," and in the following few shots there IS a sword leaning on the grindstone. After Jack says, "You need to find yourself a girl mate," he reaches overhead, pulls out a mallet and Will ducks. The grindstone is seen and again there is NO sword leaning on the grindstone. Neither Jack nor Will touched the grindstone. (00:23:05 - 00:24:50)

Continuity mistake: Being chased by the Pearl, the Interceptor lowers the anchor and it catches a rock. After a few shots on deck the next shot below deck, is of the table with the medallion on it. As the table starts to tip we see the medallion and chain. In the next close-up shot, the chain is lying on the table differently. The chain didn't start to slide between shots, only after the second shot. (01:24:25)

Continuity mistake: The rope leading to Jack's noose is wound around the wood beam six times in most shots. When Norrington runs shouting, "Move," as Will is duelling with the hangman and his axe, the rope is seen behind the hangman and it's wound only five times. In their next close-up, it's six again. (02:06:45)

Continuity mistake: Will stands on the Pearl's rail holding a gun under his chin, there are wide shots of everyone on deck, and close-ups of Jack, Elizabeth and Barbossa. The pirates and their captives differ between the close-ups and wide shots, in their appearance, position, and the way the pirates hold their weapons. Two examples: Will says, "And the crew. The crew are not to be harmed," in the close-ups Jacoby is right behind Jack, but in the wide shots he is much further away from Jack. Also in Barbossa's close-ups Pintel stands to the right of Cotton, but in the wide shots Pintel stands to Cotton's left. This type of occurrence happens throughout all of these shots. (01:31:10)

Continuity mistake: Barbossa finds out the truth about Elizabeth, he hits her and she falls to the bottom of the treasure heap where she lies unconscious. Then Will comes up out of the water to rescue a still unconscious Elizabeth. Her hair is different in both shots, as well as the position of the dress under her face, the pearls, the various objects lying on the ground all around her, and the medallion's chain as well. (01:13:35)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: Aboard the Black Pearl, just as the boat is released to swing out towards skeletal Grapple and Mallet, a rope is seen attached to the left hanging apparatus and that rope is draped across three of the seats. In the next shot, after their bones are knocked overboard, the rope in the boat is not over any of the seats but coiled up near the hanging apparatus. (01:57:30)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: In the blacksmith's shop, on the two stationary wood posts near the donkey, that have the assortment of swords hanging, the direction of some of the sword handles change in some shots. Seen in the background of some shots or when Will grabs for a sword. One example is, when Jack looks at the red hot poker after poking the donkey and when Will comes in, jumps down the step, then stops the donkey. (00:21:45)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: Jack sets his hat down on the fireplace, in the blacksmith shop. Sometimes the angle of Jack's hat changes, within close-up and wide shots, even while they're duelling. (00:21:05 - 00:23:00)

Continuity mistake: When Elizabeth first boards the Black Pearl, in some shots the end of the sleeves of her white nightgown are seen with the sleeves of her floral robe, yet in some shots the white sleeves don't show. Also in some shots, when the white sleeves do show, the amount of white sleeve varies. (00:38:00)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: When the Governor's servant opens the door and is shot by Pintel, the position of the servant's body and also in relation to the door, varies while he's lying on the floor in the three shots of him. (00:32:10)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: In the morning, when Will is with Jack at the prison, Will has scratches on his right cheekbone and jawbone and the left side of his forehead. However, after they commandeer the Interceptor, all of Will's scratches are barely even noticeable, but it is STILL the same day. (00:42:30 - 00:52:15)

Continuity mistake: When Jack says "If you can spring me from this cell," there are suddenly no bars in front of him anymore. In several shots before this, we see him talking to Will without seeing bars in front of him, but he is still at a fair distance so that it makes sense to put the camera in front of him. But in this shot we actually see the camera move with his face, and we see a bar disappearing to the right, so the camera is on Will's side of the bars, and suddenly we see Jack without bars between the two. (The hole would actually be so big he could get through it and escape.)

Continuity mistake: When Jack and Barbossa are talking on the Black Pearl, Jack begins to eat an apple, then one of the crew comes in, the monkey runs towards Jack, and Jack's hand/arm goes from being close to his chest, to close to his mouth between shots. (01:17:20)

Continuity mistake: When Elizabeth is dining with Barbossa aboard the Black Pearl, cutting between the front shots and side shots she holds the turkey leg differently in her left hand. Also held differently in her right hand is the bread when Barbossa offers her the apple and she looks at the monkey between the two shots. (00:55:10)

Continuity mistake: When Jack slides down the rope at the start, the arm that swung him round is facing Jacks left as he grabs the rope. Camera cuts and it is now instantly rotated 90 degrees. (00:19:00)

Continuity mistake: As Will is telling Gov. Swann and the Commodore that Elizabeth has been taken, his right sleeve is folded up broadly to just below his elbow. After Will slams the axe into the map, which should have, if anything, brought the sleeve down, the sleeve is higher and more tightly rolled. (00:41:20 - 00:42:05)

Continuity mistake: When Elizabeth joins Barbossa for dinner there are candelabras on the table behind Elizabeth and Barbossa and many loose candles all around. The candle heights vary in many shots. One example: when Barbossa says, "All the scattered pieces of the Aztec gold," the candles on the candelabra behind Elizabeth are much shorter than in the shot right after when Elizabeth asks, "And the blood to be repaid?" where they're much taller. (00:57:55)

Continuity mistake: When Jack, and later Will, approach Mr. Brown we see how far apart the tables in front and to the left of Mr. Brown are. Jack breaks the chain, he hears Will and the table behind him is in line with the back door. When Jack pulls the sword out of Will's hand and tosses it, in the shot of Will the table is much closer to Mr. Brown now. After Jack says, "You need to find yourself a girl, mate" and tosses the mallet at Will, in the wide shot behind Will, we see just how close together the two tables are now. The side table is angled more towards him too. This has nothing to do with camera angles. (00:21:50 - 00:24:25)

Continuity mistake: As Will and Jack duel, the vertical wood beam, near the cart and stone steps, is seen in many shots. In several shots the rope secured to it is either tied differently to the beam or is not even there. 1st example, when Will says, "You're the one they're hunting," and 2nd example, the wide shot before Jack says, "You know what you're doing, I'll give you that," the rope is tied differently. After Jack says, "You need to find yourself a girl, mate," but just before Jack tosses the mallet at Jack, forcing him to duck, there is no rope. Then, when they duel on the cart, in some close-ups the rope is seen, but in some wide shots the rope isn't there. (00:22:35 - 00:25:15)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Either the first shot has a gratuitous view of the fort or the composite people neglected to add the fort in the second shot. Norrington says, "...this is the day that Capt. Jack Sparrow almost escaped. Take him away." The night shot that follows, shows the bridge archway, and beyond it the pier, Interceptor, the fort and its parapet. After Will breaks Jack out of prison, they approach the same archway and beyond it is the pier and Interceptor, but in this shot we don't see the fort and its parapet, nor the line that Jack slid down the day before. The camera angle is exactly the same. (00:27:15 - 00:44:30)

Jack Sparrow: Who makes all these?
Will Turner: I do. And I practice with them... Three hours a day.
Jack Sparrow: You need to get yourself a girl, mate. Or perhaps the reason you practice three hours a day is that you've already found one and are otherwise incapable of wooing said strumpet. You're not a eunuch, are you?

Trivia: Johnny Depp uses the phrase "Interesting..." as his trademark in many of the movies he stars in, including Sleepy Hollow. He uses it in PotC when Koehler's skeletal hand tries to grab him in prison.

Question: There are numerous mentions of the fact that Depp based his performance as Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards. But I'm sure I saw an interview/making-of programme where he said that Jack Sparrow was a combination of two real-life 'characters'; one was Keith Richards, and try as I might, I can't remember the other one. Did anyone else see this? Who was the other inspiration for Jack Sparrow? (It may have been another actor e.g. Orlando Bloom talking *about* Johnny Depp's influences etc.).

Answer: On Disc 3, Johnny explains, "Take something as solid as Keith Richards and combine it with Pepé Le Pew... I felt... he would resemble a modern day Rastafarian..." Pepé Le Pew is a Looney Tunes cartoon character, based on Charles Boyer's romantic character, Pepé Le Moko. Pepé Le Pew, however, is a romantic amorous cartoon skunk and he has a huge flaw - his 'odor', which he emits in a grand way.
