Continuity mistake: As Marlowe puts Carmen Sternwood onto Geiger's sofa there's a coat on the left arm rest. When he came into the room it wasn't there. (00:23:45)
Continuity mistake: The mat on Arthur Gwynn Geiger's desk is flush with the edge of the desk when Marlowe snoops around in it. As he thumbs threw the codebook he doesn't go near the mat but in the next shot it's slid over the side of the desk. (00:24:10)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe looks at Arthur Gwynn Geiger's diary and his right thumb is covering the page he's reading. In the next shot his hand is moved to the right and not covering the page anymore. (00:24:15)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe turns the page of Arthur Gwynn Geiger's diary and two pages on the left are sticking up. In the next shot all the pages are flattened out. (00:24:20)
Continuity mistake: As Marlowe goes threw Arthur Gwynn Geiger's strong box, the horse on his desk moves closer to the phone between shots. (00:24:40)
Visible crew/equipment: The shadow of a boom mike or some other large piece of equipment can be seen moving on the window shade above Marlowe's head as he prepares to leave Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house. (00:24:45)
Continuity mistake: After Marlowe plops Carmen Sternwood onto her bed the lamp (on the left) moves over about two feet to the left in the next shot. (00:25:45)
Continuity mistake: After he brings her home from Geiger's house, Marlowe plops Carmen Sternwood onto her bed and both her hands are above her head. In the next shot her right hand is at her side. (00:25:45)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe puts Carmen Sternwood to bed and the folds in the curtains behind the left of her head board move and are arranged differently between shots. (00:25:50)
Revealing mistake: As they stand talking in Carmen Sternwood's bedroom a very interesting studio reflection occurs when Lauren Bacall says, "she never remembers anyway". The reflection of her dark lipstick as she says this line can be seen moving on Bogart's right cheek. (00:26:25)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe drives Carmen Sternwood home and when we first see her in the car she's facing the passenger side door. In the next shot we see her reflection in the rear view mirror and she's now facing Marlowe (1945 Version on DVD). (00:27:05)
Continuity mistake: After taking Carmen Sternwood to her bedroom, Norris the Sternwood's butler helps Marlowe put on his over coat as he prepares to leave. Marlowe wasn't wearing it when he came into the house though and there's no indication that he had it in Carmen's car because when they left Arthur Gwynn Geiger's house he didn't have it on. Visible crew/equipment: As he walks up the road across from Geiger's house, Marlowe stands next to his car for a moment and the crew's reflection can be seen moving in the driver's side hub cap of his car. (00:27:20)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe talks to Norris the Sternwood's butler at the front door and as he gets ready to leave he turns up his collar. In the next shot he turns up his collar again as he walks away (1945 Version on DVD). (00:27:45)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe goes into Geiger's house again to snoop around and he finds that Geiger's dead body has been removed. As he stands over the spot where the body was his shadow falls right on the bloodspot. In the next shot of him kneeling down and touching the blood stained carpet there's no shadow. (00:28:00)
Audio problem: The second time he's in Geiger's house, Marlowe goes into several rooms and turns on a light switch as he snoops around. The light does not come on until a fraction of a second after the switch has been thrown, and the sound of the switch being thrown does not happen until after his hand stops moving. (00:28:30)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe goes home after snooping around Geiger's house and we see the number 206 on his door with the words "Philip Marlowe, Private Investigator" underneath. Later when Inspector Bernie Ohls knocks on the door we see only the number 206 on it as Marlowe opens it. (00:29:20)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe sits in his apartment and tries to figure out the code in Geiger's notebook. On his desk the note pad next to his ash tray disappears when Inspector Bernie Ohls knocks at the door at two in the morning. (00:29:25)
Continuity mistake: As the police pull the Sternwood's Packard onto Lido Pier there are six ropes tied to the car when it comes out of the water, but only four when they hoist it up on top of the pier. (00:30:35)
Continuity mistake: The next morning after going to Lido Pier, Marlowe walks into the waiting room of his office and Lauren Bacall is sitting there reading a magazine as she waits for him. The lighting on her changes and the picture on the wall behind her head is lowered about six inches between shots. (00:32:20)
