Best movie questions of 2016

Passengers picture

Question: Why did Arthur tell Aurora that Jim woke her up even though he promised to keep it a secret?

Chosen answer: Being that Arthur is an android, he takes everything that is said literally and without analyzing it. Once Jim and Aurora began their romantic relationship, Aurora casually mentioned to Arthur that she and Jim have "no secrets" from one another, which Jim, without realizing the context or the consequences, confirmed. Arthur then interpreted it to mean that Aurora knew Jim had intentionally awakened her from the sleeping pod.

Answer: Because the ship had been malfunctioning due to collision with the asteroid it had effected Arthur as he is part of the vessel. This shows something is wrong with the ship as previously indicated, Arthur's sudden change of behaviour being integral to what is going on.

The Boy picture

Question: How could Brahms speak with a child's voice? He must be 28 years old. Don't you think that the voice sounded too much like a little boy for a man to mimic?

Bunch Son

Answer: First, the other answer stating his voice box was damaged by the fire is pure conjecture, and also isn't supported by the fact we hear Brahms speaking with an adult voice at one point in the climax. But to answer the original question, it's really not that hard for an adult to mimic a child's voice. Heck, voice actors do it all the time. Presuming that he's been stuck in the walls since the fire when he was a boy, he probably is used to speaking and acting like an overgrown child much of the time as he never really "grew up" mentally (as evidenced by his clumsy body language and attitude), only slipping into his "adult voice" when he becomes overtly irate or loses control.

TedStixon

Chosen answer: His voice box was damaged in the fire making his voice sound like that.

Deadpool picture

Question: Deadpool spends his whole movie killing dozens of people trying to find Francis. But did anyone else know that his real name was Francis, or just knew him as Ajax?

Chosen answer: No and I think that was the joke. He was angry at that whole system so taking out everyone who worked for Francis was probably just him warming up for Francis. What possibly proves this is when he finally gets to 'Agent Smith' he actually asks "where is your boss?" He doesn't say Francis to him.

Zootopia picture

Question: When Judy starts her mission to find Mr. Otterton and finds Nick with his partner, Finnick, she manages to hustle the fox, get him to confess his crimes on a voice recorder, and forces him to assist her on her mission before she decides to arrest him. Finnick laughs at Nick's humiliation and walks away. Why does Judy let Finnick off the hook despite the fact he was involved in Nick's scams?

John Ohman

Chosen answer: Finnick didn't say anything that could be used against him and she had no proof that he was delinquent on his taxes, as he said, "She hustled you good!"

Now You See Me 2 picture

Question: I thought that the chip they stole was fake? Why did Walter think it is real? Hypnosis?

Chosen answer: Walter thought the chip was real because he placed it under a scanner and the scanner confirmed that the chip was real. However, given the fact that later on it was revealed that the whole plane sequence was a set up, it is probable that the device used to scan the chip was actually a fake that was used to make Walter believe the chip was real, most likely throw him off guard.

Casual Person

New this month Answer: It is revealed later on that Allen Scott-Frank, the man from the Macau Science Center, where they stole the fake chip from, was working with The Eye. He likely anticipated their arrival due to being in contact with The Eye and planted a fake chip into the system, allowing the Horsemen to steal it. This fake chip was likely designed to trick a scanner into thinking it was real.

The Forest picture

Question: How did it end, because I missed that part in the movie. Does Sarah die or did her sister die in the forest?

Chosen answer: Sara spends much of the convoluted ending of this film in the midst of vivid hallucinations. Eventually, Sara dies, accidentally, at her own hands. She cuts her own wrists during a delusion where she believes she is cutting away the grasping fingers of her father's ghost. As she is dying, her body is dragged under the forest floor by Japanese "yurei." (ghosts). Her spirit remains to haunt the forest, lunging at Michi, the search party's forest guide, in the final frames of the film. Meanwhile her sister, Jess, has been rescued alive.

Michael Albert
The Legend of Tarzan picture

Question: When Tarzan and Jane first meet and they're sitting on a tree branch looking at each other - it looks like Jane's feet are going in the wrong direction (anatomically impossible direction). Did anyone notice this?

Chosen answer: Her feet are oriented correctly the entire time.

Jason Hoffman

Question: Hunter, as a stork, and Toady, as a pigeon, are both birds of flight. So why don't they use their wings to fly? Why would they need to use a helicopter (Hunter) and flying machine (Toady)?

Johman

Chosen answer: For the same reason people take cars even though they can walk. It's faster and doesn't require using up your energy.

Star Trek Beyond picture

Question: When Chekov and Kirk step into their escape pods while on the Enterprise there are wearing their yellow uniforms, but when arriving on the planet they step out of the escape pods and are now wearing a completely different outfit. All of the other crew that used escape pods have not changed outfits. Where did they get the new clothes from?

krissrush

Chosen answer: The outfits were in the escape pods they escaped in. The other crew members didn't change outfits because they were all captured and were unable to. Chekov and Kirk were not captured and were also the only crew on board who successfully escaped in the designated escape pods, so logically they would be the only people wearing different outfits.

Casual Person
Suicide Squad picture

Question: What was the liquid in the big containers that Harley Quinn and Joker jumped in?

Chosen answer: The same unknown acid/chemical combination that created the Joker in the first place.

Moana (2016)

Moana picture

Question: Does Maui need to eat and drink to survive? If so, how did he survive for so long on a desert island; especially when there's no signs he had any tools for fishing or a way of creating fresh water? If not, why did he seek out food when Moana showed up? Also, it's heavily implied that Maui urinates, which probably means that he drank something, but why would he if he doesn't need food or water?

Plausible_Reptile

Chosen answer: There's a sign he had tools for sculpting a statue of himself from solid stone, though we never see the sculpting tools. Given the fact that he wants food and isn't dead, it's safe to assume he also had some tools available for fishing.

Question: In the list of the cast at the end credits, one of the role names is "Chickenfish" which I don't remember at all. Please just tell me when this fish appears in the film? I have no idea what it looks like.

Bunch Son

Chosen answer: Kathy "Chickenfish" is a reoccurring, although minor character. She was in Finding Nemo as well. She's blue and green with spots and has buck teeth. She was concerned about Mr. Ray coming back from migration. (In Finding Nemo she was the one who said "Oh, my gosh! Nemo's swimming out to sea!").

Independence Day: Resurgence picture

Question: Dikembe Umbutu stated that his country had been fighting the aliens from the only City Destroyer that landed for nearly 10 years. However, it's stated later in the movie that the surviving aliens were in a catatonic state after the destruction of the mothership, and woke up when their queen arrived 20 years later. So were some aliens not psychically affected by the loss of the mothership's queen and continued a ground war?

Chosen answer: General Adams was only referring to the aliens in the Area 51 prison as having been in a catatonic state for 20 years, not all of the aliens that survived after the mothership was destroyed. Presumably, the aliens in the prison came from the City Destroyer that crashed near Area 51, but the aliens Dikembe fought came from the landed Destroyer, and with their ship intact (and given the fact that it was trying to drill to the core) those aliens retained more of a will to fight.

Doctor Strange picture

Question: When Dr. Strange gets into the accident near the beginning of the film, why didn't his car's airbag deploy? Wouldn't such an expensive car have all kinds of standard safety features?

zendaddy621

Chosen answer: The airbag did deploy. However, the deployment occurred when the car first crashed and we see the accident from the outside, so we can't see it. Once we get a shot of the interior, you can see the airbag is sticking out from the steering wheel, but (unlike what some movies would show you) airbags deflate very rapidly after a crash, so you may have missed it.

Captain America: Civil War picture

Question: After Bucky explained about all the other Winter Soldiers, Sam says 'This would have been a lot easier a week ago' but what difference would it have made if it was a week ago?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Chosen answer: Because the U.N. has been preparing to pass the Sokovia Accords and they want to oversee the Avengers. A week earlier, the Avengers would not have had to seek permission to find the other Winter Soldiers (or wait while the oversight committee makes a decision). As a result of the U.N. Sanctions, Captain America and Sam Wilson have to go rogue in order to find the other soldiers. (Their actions of going rogue result in Iron Man and his team in hunting the rogue Avengers down, creating a "civil war").

Bishop73
Angry Birds picture

Question: What's the story behind Red's job as a clown shown in the beginning of the movie?

Chosen answer: It is almost certainly playing on the trope that clowns (and comedians) often have issues with anger or depression, although they are assumed to be happy and fun.

X-Men: Apocalypse picture

Question: What happened to Psylocke after the movie? Would you say this indicates an appearance in another upcoming X-Men film?

Chosen answer: Psylocke is purposefully shown literally just walking away after the dust has settled. She could very well show up in another film somewhere along the line but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice picture

Question: Who is it that Bruce sees in his dream/vision while waiting for the file to be decrypted? It seems like it might be the Flash, given his time/dimension-travelling powers, but it doesn't look like Ezra Miller and seems to be wearing some sort of armour.

Jon Sandys Premium member

Chosen answer: It is Flash. He is wearing armour because of whatever has transpired in the future. He often wears an armoured suit in dire circumstances in the comics.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them picture

Question: How could the Erumpent the size of a whale escape out of Newt's case without Newt around, without his help (magic)? Can Erumpents shrink themselves like Occamies?

Bunch Son

Chosen answer: Erumpents cannot change their size, however the suitcase is itself enchanted to allow objects of any size to enter and exit its magically expanded interior. Newt's presence is not required for this.

Don't Breathe picture

Question: At the very beginning of the film, the burglars take care to switch off the home alarm system before ransacking the house. Why, then, as they are leaving, do they turn the system back on and shatter a window to trigger the home alarm? Makes no sense.

Charles Austin Miller

Chosen answer: As we see in the film, the houses they burgle have all purchased security systems from Alex's father. This makes it easy for them to gain access to the houses without triggering the alarm. However, if they committed a string of burglaries in which no alarms were triggered, people would eventually put together that customers of the same home security company were being burglarized and would point to them all being inside jobs. By tripping the alarm once they finish, they make it look like a standard break-in.

Hacksaw Ridge picture

Question: In the first combat scene, we see the big climbing net already in place. Who put the net up in the first place and how would that have been done? And why would the Japanese not simply cut it down after the first fights when the US troops retreated?

Michael Ebner

Chosen answer: US troops put the net up (in reality the ridge isn't as tall). The Japanese were fighting a defensive battle from heavily fortified positions on a reverse slope, and it suited them to have the Americans attacking from that point. The Americans also used ladders on other parts of the escarpment.

Alice Through the Looking Glass picture

Question: How did The Red Queen shrink The Mad Hatter's family into the size of ants?

Chosen answer: She probably forced them to drink "Pishalver" which is the potion that will make one shrink.

Nerve (2016)

Nerve picture

Question: How exactly could players of the game have their identities erased? They were watched by billions of people all over the world including their families and friends so if they were to return home, the people who they grew up with should still recognize them.

Chosen answer: It would be impossible to do this in real life. This is a fictional movie.

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life picture

Question: I think that there is one scene in which Rafe (Gluck) has braces on his teeth - but he does not for the rest of the movie. The scene is the one when he sneaks back into his bedroom and his sister is waiting for him because she overheard the fiancé telling the kids' mother that Rafe should go to military school - it is a touching scene in front of Rafe's bedroom window. Am I right that he has braces in that scene but not in any others?

Chosen answer: That's correct.

La La Land picture

Question: I may have missed this, but early in the film, how did Mia and Sebastian get into the empty planetarium? It must have been locked up pretty tight. Did someone let them in? Did they break in? I'm guessing this was explained and I didn't catch it.

Michael Albert

Chosen answer: The answer is, "It's a movie." They wouldn't have been able to drive up to the entrance either. The entire sequence is fantasy-driven.

Question: The bomb Mugatu had turned out to be a glitter bomb once it exploded onto him. So, is he dead?

Chosen answer: Mugatu was killed when the bomb was hurled back at him.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story picture

Question: 3 questions: Was the planet Krennic goes to to talk to Vader supposed to be Mustafar? If so, why would Vader want to go there of all places? Lastly, what was the reason Krennic went to visit Vader?

Chosen answer: Yes, Pablo Hidalgo from the Lucasfilm Story Group confirmed Vader's palace was on Mustafar. Gary Whitta who wrote the story, suggested that he lived there because "he wants to punish himself" for turning to the dark side. Krennic visits Vader because he wants him to arrange a personal audience with the Emperor and cut Tarkin out of the equation.

The Purge: Election Year picture

Question: People with a rank of 10 or higher are immune from the purge, this means the NFFA and Senator Roan are immune. Why put themselves at risk of getting killed by removing the restriction if they could've had her delivered as plan, killed, and then denied her murder at the conclusion of the purge?

Chosen answer: Because they believed in what the purge represented. In their eyes it is a legal thing, so in order for them to legally get rid of the senator they had to remove the restriction legally, not break the law.

Sing (2016)

Sing picture

Question: In the trailer it shows a pig singing "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga but this song is not on the soundtrack. Why is that? Also "Anaconda" on the soundtrack is "Oh.My.Gosh" instead of its proper title. Again, why is that? It doesn't make sense for one song to be in the movie but not on the soundtrack and for another song to not have its proper title.

Chosen answer: It would have to do with paying royalties to the artists if the songs were included on the soundtrack album. The artists would be paid a one-time flat fee for their songs to be used in the movies or the trailers, but for albums being sold would mean some of the profits would have go to the artists. The movie studio can make just as much on the soundtrack album without certain songs being included. Regarding the title, it may be the artist wanted it changed for some reason, or the filmmakers felt it didn't fit in.

Phantasm: Ravager picture

Question: I am confused as to what really happened. Was the entire series of movies a fantasy of Reggie's like Mike said it was? Was the planet taken over by the Tall Man like the other reality showed? Or are we left to our own imagination on which reality was real and which was not?

lartaker1975

Chosen answer: This film is infamous for its confusing to follow narrative, owed to the fact it was originally intended as a series of shorts rather than a linear structure. As it stands it is up to the viewer to decide, however the post credits scene seems to suggest one world is real as Reggie plays no part in the scene.
