The Dick Van Dyke Show

The Great Petrie Fortune - S5-E6

Plot hole: If Rob was just 12 or 13 when he last saw his grandfather (that's what they said in this episode, also he never called his grandfather ever from what it looks like) then his grandfather wouldn't know that he has been working on a TV program. (He started working on the Alan Brady show when he was 20, not before).

The Sound of Trumpets of Conscience Falls Deafly on a Brain That Holds Its Ears - S3-E11

Other mistake: Rob is complaining to Sally and Buddy about this couple running through a parking lot not looking where they are going, and they knocked him down on his rear end as well as hands. He fell into some grease yet there weren't any grease stains on his jacket which would have actually been on his butt and hands.

The Plots Thicken - S3-E24

Continuity mistake: When Richie asks Laura and Rob "Is dinner ready?" the door behind him is closed. Laura tells Richie "Yes, it's ready." We get back to Richie as he yells and the door is cracked open. Then when we see the wide shot of Richie, Laura and Rob the door is closed again.

Liz Blue 1970

A Bird in the Head Hurts - S2-E11

Revealing mistake: The problem with Rob's story is that he said he shot the bird with the rifle, but the rifle there that Rob is swinging around doesn't have a hole for bullets to come out of. It's a fake.

A Nice, Friendly Game of Cards - S3-E18

Character mistake: Right at the beginning of this episode Laura calls Lou Gregory "dad." He's not her dad. (00:00:30)

Suggested correction: She says "Beth", Lou's wife, not "dad."

Bishop73

The Last Chapter - S5-E30

Continuity mistake: Laura is reading the name of Rob's book "Unimportant Life of Robert F. Petrie" yet in "Fifty-Two, Forty-Five or Work" Rob said his name was "Robert Simpson Petrie"

Liz Blue 1970

Br-rooom, Br-rooom - S4-E31

Continuity mistake: In this episode we do not see a garage door. Yet in the "Long Night's Journey into Day" episode the garage door would have been right where all the tools and junk were on Rob's right (close to where Richie was standing talking to Rob).

Liz Blue 1970

Fifty-Two, Forty-Five or Work - S5-E13

Other mistake: Right at the beginning of this episode Rob says "9 years ago right in this office... I just came on as head writer 2 months was all... Buddy, Sally and I were sitting at this desk, writing a sketch, and you (Mel) came in with some special news." (so on and so forth with that line.) Rob, Sally and Buddy weren't in "this office" building... Didn't even have the same desk or furniture.

The Meershatz Pipe - S1-E10

Visible crew/equipment: While Rob is sick in bed he's just about to grab the phone near the end of this episode you can see a big shadow of a giant camera in between the back of the TV set and a stage light behind the camera. (00:21:22)

1

The Sick Boy and the Sitter - S1-E1

Continuity mistake: Richie's room is completely different from this episode compared to the later episode "The Man from My Uncle."

My Husband is the Best One - S3-E14

Continuity mistake: In a different episode the Alan Brady show writers were on a different floor than Alan Brady and Mel Cooley. Yet in this episode they're on the same floor because we can hear Alan yelling at Mell while Rob is in the writers room where Sally and Buddy, currently furious reading the magazine article. (00:14:37)

The Man from My Uncle - S5-E27

Factual error: The Cov Agent says "we want to use your house for base operation for looking at the house across the street. Rob says "Jerry helper!" yet Jerry lives on the same side of the street (closest to the den, across from Rob's bedroom). Someone has their houses mixed up.

Buddy Sorrell, Man and Boy - S5-E22

Other mistake: Rob got a new watch for his birthday a few seasons back. Yet he's still wearing his old watch. And also his watch time says it's 3:00. Rob and Sally would still be at work if it was actually 3:00.

100 Terrible Hours - S4-E28

Character mistake: Rob is reading the news or his lines and instead of saying "the stay awake record of 100 hours" he says "stay away record of 100 hours."

Suggested correction: Of course he does. He is punch drunk from the lack of sleep. That's the point.

On hour 24 Rob couldn't even say the rhyme at all. Sounded slightly drunk then too also his lower eye lids got dark. I have been up for 48 hours before and my eye lids never turned that color also I didn't act slightly drunk like that either. So it's not actually true to life here.

1) You can't assume your personal experiences is typical of everyone's. 2) I doubt your experience was very funny. In a comedy, humor overrides "true to life."

More like dumbness overrides "true to life." I'm pretty sure that falling down the stairs is funny to some people (which is what I did).

Liz Blue 1970

Bupkis - S4-E24

Other mistake: Buzzy said that Rob made a song making fun of Sergeant Foley. However, Rob's Sergeant was Lebost.

Liz Blue 1970

Dear Mrs. Petrie, Your Husband is in Jail - S3-E28

Character mistake: Rob is telling Laura why he's in jail. He says "Monica Doorwell! She must be Millie and Jerry's babysitter." The babysitter's last name is "Darwell". (00:02:00 - 00:04:00)

Liz Blue 1970

The Lady and the Tiger and the Lawyer - S3-E16

Continuity mistake: Donna goes back to the den to get her coat to show Arthur. Laura yells at Rob in the kitchen "Rob! Did you lock her in the Bathroom!?" It's a den in most of the episodes... Turns out in this episode it turns into a bathroom with carpet on the floor. (Supposedly when Laura is yelling at Rob in the kitchen).

Liz Blue 1970

Long Night's Journey into Day - S5-E23

Other mistake: Rob tells Jerry to keep calling Rob's house. Jerry says "hello, this is Jerome Helper" yet there was the episode "All About Eavesdropping" where Rob calls Jerry "Gerald."

Liz Blue 1970

Fifty-Two, Forty-Five or Work - S5-E13

Continuity mistake: Rob tells Sally, Buddy and Mel "It was rough... Out of work, new house, no furniture, a baby on the way, 1 single dime in the bank!" In several other episodes Rob said they either already had a kid, or they were on their way to the hospital in the cab, on their way to the hospital in the back of a laundry truck, or were already at the hospital. They already had furniture in the other episodes when they brought Richie home from the hospital.

Liz Blue 1970

The Gunslinger - S5-E31

Revealing mistake: Millie (in Rob's dream) tells Jerry (Doc) that "Big Bad Brady is already dead" yet we see that Brady is up there trying to not move, laugh or breathe. He's still alive if his stomach is still going and moving the whole time. Also when he aims his pistol at Rob, he's aiming it at Robs hat. Not at Robs arm. Which is where Rob said he got "shot"

Liz Blue 1970

Rob Petrie: At least I'll prove one thing tonight: Television writers marry the prettiest girls.
