Dracula (1992)

Factual error: When Professor Van Helsing is about to perform the blood transfusion on Lucy, he says, "I've only experimented. Landsteiner's method." However, Karl Landsteiner's method was about the ABO blood types, which Van Helsing knows nothing about (in keeping with the novel, the transfusion is carried out without any mention of compatible blood groups), and the first of Landsteiner's groundbreaking articles about the subject wasn't published until 1900, three years after the movie is set. Continuity mistake: When Mina and Van Helsing are making camp in front of Dracula's castle, in the first shot, there is a bird's eye view of Van Helsing walking over to Mina with a bowl of food. In the next shot, he comes over with the food again. (01:49:13)

Continuity mistake: When Mina moves the vase of garlic flowers sitting on Lucy's bedside table, in the close-up of the vase, the bouquet is quite full and the flowers look healthy, but when Lucy grabs the vase a couple of shots later, the amount of flowers has dwindled and many of the plants are drooping. Continuity mistake: When Mina and Lucy are looking at erotic illustrations in the Arabian Nights book, in the wide shots of the girls holding the book, Mina's nails are cut short, but in the close-ups of her hands on the book, her nails are longer. (00:19:21)

Dracula (1992)

Revealing mistake: When Mina and Dracula are at the restaurant, when Mina says, "Tell me, Prince... tell me of your home", they are sitting at a dinner table positioned very close to the wall with the frosted windowpanes, with hardly any room between the wall and the table. However, when Mina says, "With gowns flowing white", she is standing in front of the same window, and the chairs and the table are now sitting much further away from the wall, so that when Dracula walks away from the table to stand beside her a few shots later, he has to take several steps to reach her. Revealing mistake: After Van Helsing's lecture, there is a quick scene showing Jonathan as the prisoner of Dracula's brides. At the start of the scene, there is a close-up of one of the brides' eye, where you can see the edges of her contact lens. (00:56:57)

Dracula (1992)

Continuity mistake: When Mina is asleep in Dr. Seward's quarters, Dracula enters her bedchamber in the form of green mist. In the first shot, a black chair is sitting by the window, in front of Dr. Seward's wardrobe. When Mina is on the bed with Dracula, the chair is sitting directly beneath the window, next to the wardrobe (this is best seen when Dracula embraces Mina after they exchange blood). In the shot where Jonathan helps Mina out of the bed after the vampire hunters walks in on her and Dracula, the chair is once again sitting in front of the wardrobe. (01:35:30 - 01:42:45)

Revealing mistake: When Dracula escapes from Mina's bedchamber, he transforms into a figure of rats. If you look at the waist area beneath the humanoid rat figure's right arm, you can see one of the metal rods of the armature that was used to create the rat dummy. A couple of other rods are glimpsed as well. (01:43:05)

Dracula (1992)

Revealing mistake: When Dracula enters Mina's bedroom in the form of green mist, at the end of the first shot, as the mist begins moving across the floor, a vertical beam of the green light that was used to color the mist appears beneath the chair that is sitting by the window (as stated in the film's official behind the scenes book, the effect with the mist was accomplished by using dry ice smoke which was lit green and superimposed on the set with a 50/50 mirror). Dracula (1992)

Continuity mistake: When Van Helsing fends off Lucy in the crypt, he forces her to lie down inside the stone coffin and fall asleep. However, when Arthur and Van Helsing proceed to kill her, you can see that she is no longer lying inside the coffin but is lying on top of it, on the stone lid; this is best seen in the overhead shot where we see the stake go through her heart and the shot where her head is sliced off. There is no way that the vampire hunters took an angry and dangerous vampire out of the coffin, proceeded to push the heavy stone lid back into place and then placed her on top of the lid before they proceeded with their grisly work. Dracula (1992)

Character mistake: At the beginning of the scene where the vampire hunters leave London in pursuit of Dracula, Jonathan narrates, "By train we can reach the Romanian port in Varna in three days." However, Varna is a Bulgarian seaport. This can even be seen on the map showing the Turkish invasion of Eastern Europe in the movie's prologue, and on the map that Jonathan studies aboard the train at the beginning of the film. Trivia: When Mina meets Dracula on the street, after she first rebuffs him, she walks past a sandwich board advertising a play with Henry Irving at the Lyceum Theatre. For many years, Bram Stoker worked as the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre, which was run by Irving. The famous stage actor is widely believed to be one of Stoker's inspirations for Count Dracula. (00:46:30)

Dracula (1992)

Dracula mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Elisabeta commits suicide by jumping into the river, her suicide letter is lying on the floor (it is definitely the suicide letter and not the false message from the Turks, because the words and handwriting are 100% identical to the suicide letter that Vlad finds - the actual message from the Turks can be seen in a brief flashback during the scene with Mina and Dracula at the restaurant later in the film). However, when Vlad picks up and reads the letter, it is a different piece of paper: The frayed edges at the top have disappeared and the parchment itself is longer, with more distance between the bottom lines of the message and the bottom of the paper. Dracula (1992)

Continuity mistake: When Mina sits down on Lucy's bed to tell her the news about Jonathan, the pillow under Lucy's back and the one next to it on her left both have a distinctive pattern. In the next shot, both pillows have a different design. When Mina gets up, the first pillows are back, but when Lucy starts noticing the garlic, the second set has returned. Then, when she smashes the vase in anger, the first pillows are there, but when Lucy yells, "It's nothing but common garlic!", a third set of pillows appear behind her back, which change into different pillows two shots later. Revealing mistake: When Jonathan closes the transactions in Dracula's castle, as Dracula's shadow is shown trying to strangle him, you can see Gary Oldman's real shadow on the right-hand side of the screen, standing in front of the shadow of Keanu Reeves. Also, in the final shot of the scene, as Dracula turns around and walks away, Dracula's shadow appears directly behind Jonathan, but Gary Oldman's own shadow can be seen on the right-hand side of the screen, moving in accord with the actor as he leaves the room. Dracula (1992)

Trivia: This movie is filled with scenes showing how the laws of nature do not work correctly when in the presence of a vampire, such as liquid dripping upward, shadows moving on their own accord, etc. A more subtle example is the scenes where Dracula is standing outside the large French doors to Lucy's bedroom: When other people walk through the doorway or stand in front of the glass doors, there is a considerable height difference between their heads and the door frame, but when Dracula is standing outside her bedroom, he almost reaches the top of the door frame.
