The Desperation Emanation - S4-E5

Question: In this episode, when Amy is waiting outside for Sheldon because she was told he wasn't home when she arrived to see him, Sheldon is coming down the stairs. As he does so, he is singing a peculiar song and skipping steps. Why is he doing this? Is there something I'm missing?

OliviaD3601

Chosen answer: Sheldon has been shown to a) be a little weird and b) like to pass his commuting time exercising his mind with brain teasers and such. The song in the episode "The Desperation Emanation" names the star systems closest to our solar system, in order, from closest to furthest away. Typically of Sheldon, if he gets it wrong, he has to start again, or it isn't right!

Question: Just before the Emperor is raised, why does the General demand that Evie O'Connell translate what's written on the Eye? She is (or at least was) an Egyptian expert. Both the General and his female aide are there - couldn't one of them read it?

Answer: First, it's ancient Chinese, probably unreadable to someone who speaks modern day Chinese (and possibly a different dialect as well). Also, Evie was an Egyptian expert, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have other areas of expertise.

Thunderball (1965)

Question: Is it ever mentioned in one of the other movies or in any of the books about why SPECTRE members have the number they do? Is it based on rank, or is it just a codename? (So would Largo be the highest ranked under Blofeld?).

Answer: In the novels, the numbers of members were initially assigned at random and then rotated by two digits every month to prevent detection. For example, if one was Number 1 this month, he would be Number 3 next month. At the time of Thunderball, the leader, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, has been assigned "Number 2", while Emilio Largo is assigned "Number 1". In the films the number indicates rank: Blofeld is always referred to as "Number 1" and Emilio Largo, in Thunderball, is "Number 2".

Radio (2003)

Question: In the trailer for Radio (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0316465/trailers-screenplay-E18624-314), at the 1:23 point, some very distinctive music begins. This same music was used in one of the trailers for Forrest Gump. Is there a connection between the two?

Jeff Swanson

Chosen answer: Probably not. Many trailers re-use distinctive music from older trailers they are not related to.

SexyIrishLeprechaun

Chosen answer: The original title for the movie was "In a Northwesterly Direction", as it was originally detailing the flight of a man from New York to Alaska, according to writer Earnest Lehman. According to Alfred Hitchcock, however, he took the title from a line in Hamlet, another work of fiction that is concerned with the slippery nature of reality. It is also worth noting that North by Northwest is not a direction on the compass at all. The nearest to it would be Northwest by North.

I Am Legend (2007)

Question: **END OF MOVIE SPOILER WARNING** At the end of the film, Will Smith dramatically sacrifices himself with a grenade, just after telling Anna and Ethan to hide until dawn. However, they are currently below ground in his basement, meaning no natural light. Wouldn't this mean that any Zombies surviving the grenade would still be able to attack Ethan & Anna?

Answer: He may have installed an escape tunnel in the old coal chute. Being a virologist, he'd know the protocol of having two exits from every lab. Therefore they could have escaped out the top of the coal chute once it got bright. Also, the implication is that the main mutant was only after Robert. Once he (and Robert) was dead, they wouldn't have bothered chasing Anna.

Chosen answer: Without talking to the producers, it's impossible to be sure, but it's possible he was gonna be killed off early, or only appear in a few episodes. As the show developed he developed into a more stable character and became a regular cast member.

King Kong (2005)

Chosen answer: Since it was not shown, there can only be speculation. However, I would assume they used an elaborate pulley system, possibly with one or more of the rocks taking the Kong weight. There seems to be plenty of room on the deck for him and, with a lot of the ships load jetissoned, it would be lighter. Then it would simply be a case of securing him and making sure he didn't wake up... no problem with the amount of chloroform on board.

Ocean's Twelve (2004)

Question: What was the point of putting Yen in a bag with a men's soccer team?

Answer: The bag with Yen in it got mixed up at the hotel. It was designed to sneak him in without anyone knowing he was there, but it backfired.

SexyIrishLeprechaun

Answer: Police had a sketch of Yen as CZJ saw him and Danny when Rusty opened his hotel room door and they figured this was the best way to smuggle Yen out of the hotel. Police were shown sitting outside the hotel in a car on watch.

Question: I've tried to look for this in the books but I still don't get it. When future Harry and Hermione come back to the hospital wing after they went back in time and saved Sirius, then their selves should have just left again to do the same thing. What happens to them, since it was already done? Where do they go?

Answer: Time travel is very complex. They are going back to fix things, but from out point of view, they already have! But, if you consider when our Harry and Hermionie leave, the previous Harry and Hermionie would enter the room, it might start to make sense. Basically, an infinite number of Harry and Hermionie travel back to change the past, but we only follow one.

Question: I'm confused. Is Pam really having a baby or not 'cause when the credits were rolling gaylord said Pam wasn't really having a baby. Then when he noticed the camera he said he was joking. So is Pam having a baby or not?

Answer: Pam is pregnant. This scene echoes one in Meet the Parents where Ben Stiller talks into a picture frame, revealing that he did smoke hash, did flush the toilet and all the other stuff he said he didn't do. Except this time, he knows the camera is there and plays up to it.

Meet the Fockers (2004)

Question: When Greg, Pam and their parents are in the garden drinking, one of them gets onto the fact that Greg is an only child. Jack says to Greg 'You said you had a sister. You milked your sister's cat'. Then Greg looks at him strangely and looks away. I never get that. Why did he lie about having a sister?

Answer: In Meet the Parents, the film to which this is the sequel, Greg says something about how you can milk anything, even cats "I once milked my sister's cat". Obviously, Greg was clutching at straws and concocted this story about his fictious sister's cat to try get out of it. Of course, Jack being a former CIA man picked up on this.

SexyIrishLeprechaun

Answer: Greg is also a nurse so the head nurse tends to be called a sister.

Star Wars (1977)

Question: Is there a difference in the opening scroll between the original release and later versions? I'm specifically wondering if "Episode IV: A New Hope" was included in the original theatrical release, or added later.

Answer: In 1977, the original release just said "Star Wars". Lucas didn't want to confuse everybody. However, one year later, when re-released because of its popularity, he had renamed it "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope".

General questions

Is there any reason why actors/actresses don't have credits in some films when they generally have a small role or cameo. I have seen this seems to especially apply to animated film where top stars are left uncredited. An example is Beavis & Butthead do America in which Bruce Willis, Demi Moore and Greg Kinnear were all uncredited despite having large roles. Has this got anything to do with the SAG? I know SAG has tight rules about actors who receive credits are also supposed to be given certain benefits under union rules.

Lummie

Chosen answer: Sometimes previous commitments make them unable to have their name attached to something. Examples include Michael Jackson and Dustin Hoffman, who both appeared uncredited in The Simpsons (or rather, credited under false names), for the simple reason that they were unable, due to contract obligations, to have their name appear in conjuction with it.
