Ending / spoiler

(3 votes)

The Phantom (Billy Zane) defeats Xander Drax with the fourth skull (which is his Phantom skull ring) and he recovers his father's Phantom skull belt. Phantom tells Diana the story about the origin of The Phantom and how the tradition is passed on. Diana figures out on her own that Kit Walker is The Phantom and he talks about marriage. Diana leaves Bengala with Catherine Zeta Jones but she promises to return.

Factual error: When Xander's thugs are taking the Phantom up to the roof to do away with him, he breaks away and ducks into the machinery room for the elevator. In the scene the door of the room is lockable from the inside only. This door should be lockable from only the outside.

Trivia: The film was originally written as a bit of a comedic spoof of superhero and adventure stories by "Gremlins" director Joe Dante and famed screenwriter Jeffrey Boam. Dante was planning on directing it. However, the movie was paused due to budget concerns, and Dante left the project. When it was put back into production, the script was re-written by several ghost writers, and director Simon Wincer decided to play the comedy 100% straight, which original director Dante felt was a huge mistake.

Question: If Diana was able to recognize Kit even after years of not seeing him then how come she didn't notice he has the same voice as the Phantom, whom she had just been with the day before? He doesn't try to disguise his voice in any way.

Answer: She was preoccupied trying to escape from the bad guys and annoyed that a guy in a purple suit, was trying to save her, when she said, "I can do it myself." It was most likely later, in New York, when the met face to face. Kit and Diana, when she put two and two together. Again was too preoccupied trying to save the world to pause and confront him.

Answer: In real life, she would likely have recognized it. Movies employ a "suspension of disbelief." Audiences are expected to accepted something they know is not realistic in order for the plot to play out.
