Trivia: Before Twilight, Emile Hirsch and Kristen Stewart worked together in a film, Into the Wild. Emile would later recommend Kristen to Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, who had worked with Emile on Lords of Dogtown. Interestingly enough, also in that film was Nikki Reed, who would later play Rosalie in Twilight.
Trivia: Cam Gigandet, who plays James, once stated that when he auditioned for a part in the film, he won and was originally cast as Emmet. However, he preferred to play James, and he got the role. He refers to James as the vampire's vampire.
Trivia: Stephenie Meyer (on the bonus features DVD) discusses how she wishes she had thought of putting the dream sequence in her book that is in the movie. When Bella dreams of Edward in her bedroom, he is in the room. Bella immediately sits up and switches on the light, and he is not in the room. The audience knows that Edward was in the bedroom with Bella, and Stephenie Meyer says, "Oh, I should have done that!" in the book.
Trivia: Kirsten Stewart was allowed to choose the song "Flightless Bird" by the band Iron and Wine for the prom scene. Catherine Hardwicke said it is very rare for an actress to suggest a piece of music that would actually make it into the movie.
Trivia: Kristen Stewart wore director Catherine Hardwicke's shirt in the bedroom kissing scene. Catherine has not washed or worn it since. (Per Twilight director's notebook).
Trivia: One of the waitresses at the diner is Kristen Stewart's stunt double, Katie Powers.
Trivia: Before being cast in the role of Edward Cullen, Robert Pattinson had never heard of "Twilight." He only auditioned for the part because he was impressed with Kristen Stewart's performance in "Into the Wild."
Trivia: When Bella is in the hospital at the end of the movie, the television in her room is showing the fire at the ballet studio. In that scene, the television also shows Taylor Lautner (Jacob), sitting and talking with Kristen Stewart (Bella). It is probably a clip from an interview.
Trivia: In a cafeteria scene, Eric is saying something about a pyramid. This is taken from a "rock opera" produced by director Catherine Hardwicke in her college days.
Answer: Edward is able to read anyone's mind "except" for Bella's. He cannot understand why and that confuses and frustrates him. It is learned later that Bella has an unknown ability to block any mental intrusion. That is why Aro could not see Bella's memories and why Jane was unable to mentally inflict pain on her in "Twilight: New Moon."
