Fight Club

The movie starts off with Edward Norton (who in this movie has no name so I will call him Edward) trying to cure his isomnia. He eventually finds a cure, which is going to support groups for people with dieseses, such as testicular cancer, which is where he meets Bob. He discovers that when he cries at these support groups he is able to sleep. This is going good for him for about 2 years, until Marla Singer comes along, who like Edward doesn't actually have any illnesses. He finds that when Marla is at the support groups he can't cry, which means he can't sleep. He eventually confronts Marla, and they decide to come up with a solution where they switch off, so they don't have to see each other anymore. It then goes on to Edwards work, which is some kind of recall agent for some car corporation. On one of his plane rides he meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), who is a soap salesman. Once he gets off the plane he heads to his condo, which has somehow exploded. He doesn't know who to call, until he finds Tyler Durden's card, which he got on the plane. They meet at a bar and have a few drinks, and once they get outside Tyler tells Edward to punch him because he has never been in a fight. So after some arguing Edward agress to hit him and punches him in the ear. After Tyler punches Edward in the stomcah and they start to fight. Afterward they go back to Tylers house, which is in terrible shape. Time goes on and they start to have other people fighting with them in the parking lot, until eventually they get to go into the basement of the bar to fight after it's closed and it is then called fight club. Eventually it goes to a scene in Tylers house (where Edward is living also) and Marla calls. Edward picks up and it appears that Marla took too many pills and is suicidal, so Edward puts the phone on the table. It then cuts to the next morning, and for the first time in the 3 months that Edward has been living there Tylers door was shut, and there were some condoms in the toilet. Tyler comes down the stairs and eventually tells Edwards that he saws the phone on the table and picked it up, went to Marlas appartment, picked her up and brought her back to the house and had sex all night. So then as time goes on Tyler keeps havin sex with Marla all the time, they keep going to fight club on the weekends, and Tyler is declining in work. It eventually cuts to a scene in fight club while during a fight someone comes down, it turns out to be Lou, the owner of Lou's Tavern, and he didn't know about any of the fighting going on. He then tells them all to leave, but Tyler refuses kindly, Lou eventually get to the point where he starts beating Tyler and walks away, then Tyler jumps on Lou and starts bleeding all over him and whatnot. So Lou, whos completly disgusted agress to let them stay and leaves with his 2 body guards. Afterwards Tyler tells all the people at fight club that they have a homework assignment, which is to get into a fight and lose. So the next day Tyler goes into his boss's office and tries to blackmail saying he won't tell any of the company's secrets if he pays him while Edward stays home. His boss says he's fired and calls in security, but before they get there Edward punches himself a bunch, throws himself into a table and some shelves. When he throws himelf into the shelves he comments "For some reason I was reminded about my first fight with Tyler. So he crawls to his boss all bloody and bashed when at that moment security busts in. Edward gets 52 weekly paychecks and some stuff, like computers, etc...Time goes on and Tyler keeps giving out more homework assignments of vandilism. The city starts to get aware that this is all from one group so it cuts to a scene of some city official giving a speech on the acts of vandilism. When he goes to the bathroom a few of the people from fight club tackle him and threaten to cut off his balls unless he stops the rigouris investigations. As time goes on it shows that people from fight club are joining the house and in order to do that they have to stand outdie in one spot for 3 days without moving. Eventually there is about 20 or so people all living in the house. Tyler eventually tells Edward that fight club has evovled into Project Mayhem.

Continuity mistake: Close to the end when Edward Norton runs up to the front of the empty building and Brad Pitt appears, he tries to break the glass door by pushing a bench into the door, but it doesn't work. He doesn't move the bench and he then shoots at the glass and breaks it. When it shows him walking through the broken door, the bench has disappeared. (02:05:10)

Question: What is the meaning of the penguin and Marla saying 'Sly' in the cave?

Answer: The penguin says "slide" and then slides on its belly. Marla repeats it later. I believe they are telling him to let go and be Tyler.

Grumpy Scot

Answer: Penguin is a manifestation of the "happy place" in his head. He seeks comfort in others grieving and this is what is helping him feel again. As someone else stated "slide" is the statement that is uttered. Marla is invading his grieving time and this is a manifestation of it. He can't even get away from her in his meditation, so he ends up leaving it altogether.
