Continuity mistake: In the scene after Max visits Felix - when they drive away - the tape holding the taxi sign on the top of the taxi changes. The top piece of tape is gone in one of the shots, and then it comes back.

Jacob La Cour

Continuity mistake: When the police are examining the place on the ground where the first victim fell, there is lots of glass from the broken window - and it's close together. That glass is not there in previous shots - for example when they look down from the window.

Other mistake: In the scene where Jamie Foxx flips the taxi, you can see Tom Cruise sitting bolt upright, hanging from the ceiling as the car is sliding. As the car stops, however, you see that he was not wearing a seatbelt and is lying on the roof of the overturned car.

Revealing mistake: In the scene in the morgue, you can see the carotid artery beat on the "body".

Factual error: When Vincent and Max enter the Fever nightclub, we hear loud dance music. However, Vincent calmly tells Max to stay near him and not wander off or he'll shoot bystanders first. Anyone whose ever been in a crowded, noisy dance club knows it's almost impossible to have a normal conversation without shouting to be heard above the music.

Continuity mistake: After this dialog "You might make it through the night, come out 700 bucks ahead". Notice there are fewer cars behind them, next shot more cars behind, then again fewer. The scenery behind the car changes in seconds.

Factual error: The 2nd location Vincent heads to is on Fountain Avenue in West Hollywood. Upon his arrival, the victim is shown from the inside his apartment and out the window, lots of highrises are shown all over. No such real skyline of highrises like this exist in West Hollywood (especially on Fountain Avenue).

Continuity mistake: When Max gets off the train, he has his glasses on. However, in the next shot of him getting off, his glasses are gone.

Continuity mistake: When we first see Vincent in Annie's building, he is in an office to the left side of the building. You can tell this because there were offices down and to the right. However, when Max is telling Annie "now" there is an office below her on the right side of the building. (01:39:00)

Trivia: The film was almost entirely shot in high definition. Director Michael Mann states he did this to capture the night scenes more vividly.

Suggested correction: The number of movies shot in less-than-HD could be counted on one hand.

I believe it refers to the fact that Collateral is considered to be the first major movie to use a digital camera, not the traditional film support.

Question: I noticed from the previews that this movie looks very different. What is it? Is it a digital camera that has been used? Or no lighting effects used? The movie really has a "behind the scene" feel.

Kirill Ostapenko

Chosen answer: It was shot with a digital camera. IMDB is a great place to answer questions like this. Go to *Technical Specifications* in the *Other Info* section of the menu on the left hand side of the screen. In an interview in American Cinematographer, Michael Mann said that as far as he was aware, this was one of the first movies to attempt to make a "look" out of digital video rather than trying to make Digital Video look like film. This approach meant the movie could be shot in the low-light scenes of urban desolation Mann wanted - because Digital reacts much better to low light than film. The approximately 20% of the picture that was shot on film was mostly, according to Mann, the portion set in the "Fever" nightclub - because this is the scene with the brightest lighting states, a condition in which Digital Video does not perform as well.
