Continuity mistake: When Max and Vincent pull up to the second contract killing, Vincent gets out of the back of the cab holding two seals in his right hand, but in the following shot the seals are in his left hand. (00:29:10)

Revealing mistake: In the train scene if you look closely at Vincent's ear as he steps off the train ready to shoot Max and Annie, it looks like he has an earpiece or some kind of small blood pack in his ear. (01:44:05)

Suggested correction: He could, in fact have an earpiece/hearing aid in place, and what with the wild night he's been having, the accident and all, a blood pack is not out of place either.

dizzyd

It's visible that just a little amount of blood dried up in the ear. Not any earpiece or blood pack.

Continuity mistake: At the very beginning, just after Max puts the photograph on the visa, the shot cuts to Max's boss holding a Coke with his right hand and the other hand is down by his side, but in the following shot he has his hands crossed in front of him. (00:02:35)

The-Immortal

Character mistake: In the scene where Detective Fanning and the other cops are investigating the first murder, one cop tosses a shell casing in a baggie out the window to Fanning. The cop then remarks, "You can still smell the cordite." This is incorrect because cordite has not been used as cartridge propellant since approximately the end of World War II.

Continuity mistake: In this scene when Max and Vincent are talking about Max's limo service, if you look out of the side window, the scenery changes 3 times in the course of about 3 seconds. (00:55:40)

The-Immortal

Continuity mistake: After running out of the hospital, Vincent and Max face off on the foot-bridge over the freeway. As Vincent moves toward Max, in the long shot you see him move the gun from his right hand to his left. In the close-up, it stays in his right hand.

Factual error: The Blue Line train actually makes many stops with stops occurring approximately every 2 min. (with or without passengers) The scene at the end in the film lasts many minutes without a single stop.

Continuity mistake: After Max and Vincent leave the first hit, while they're talking about why Max cares about the death of "some fat Angeleno," their cab is being followed in rapidly successive shots by a silver car, then a black SUV, then the silver car again, then the police cruiser.

Kristal

Continuity mistake: When leaving the club Fever (I think) the taxi driver is so shaken he drives off and hits two cars parked to the left, leaving them badly damaged. Later, just before he flips the taxi, you can see that both sides are unmarked, which seems unlikely.

Continuity mistake: At the beginning of the film, when Vincent first approaches Max's cab, Max reaches up to the visa in his taxi with his left hand. When the shot goes to Vincent, it's now Max's right hand, not his left. (00:13:35)

The-Immortal

Continuity mistake: When Max and Vincent pull up in the alley on the second contract, on the overhead view there is nothing on the alley, but when it goes to a shot of the back of the taxi, there are two large concrete objects, also if you look closely there is only one person in the cab. (00:29:20)

The-Immortal

Continuity mistake: After they leave El Rodeo there is noticeably more blood on the roof of the cab and in the cracked glass of the windshield, so much so that it is running down toward the hood.

Plot hole: Near the end Max calls Annie, using the number on the card she gave him, to warning her about Vincent's arrival. But why is there on the card the number of the law library on the 16th floor and not Annie's office number or her cell phone number?

Suggested correction: The number on her business card is her office line. A lot of office phones are set up so they ring in multiple places throughout the office. A light will blink on the phone letting you know which line is ringing. The line is connected to her office phone, which we see Vincent looking at in her office when she was on the phone with Max, which then gives away her location. This is a very popular way of having phones set up in offices, as it eases communication between co-workers. If one of her co-workers wants to talk to her while she's in the library, they can simply dial her line instead of going up two floors. Furthermore, it is also possible that her cell phone number could be on the card. But Max tried the office number first. He would likely have tried the cell number next, had she not answered.

Continuity mistake: In the middle of the movie at the jazz club, Max and Vincent are talking, at one point you see Max look at Vincent and raise his drink, in the following shot you see that his face is down looking at his drink, then he looks at Vincent. (00:39:05)

The-Immortal

Continuity mistake: When the 2 detectives are talking outside the apartment where the first contract was carried out, in one shot of the detective with the long raincoat like jacket he is facing the other detective on the scene, in the following shot, he is talking with his back towards him. (00:37:45)

The-Immortal

Continuity mistake: When Vincent shoots the two guys in the alley who stole his briefcase, there is no damage on their bodies whatsoever from the gunshots. Despite shooting both numerous times you can see there are no holes or blood on either of them.

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Annie hands Max her business card, you initially see the car window lowering and then stopping halfway down. In the next shot the window is still moving; a moment later the window is still in its halfway-down position and stopped again. (00:12:45)

Factual error: When the undercover detective enters the apartment of Vincent's first victim, he calls LAPD dispatch with his cell phone and requests for two "black and whites" and a "night" detective to respond to the scene. All LAPD detectives work on a 9am-5pm schedule except for homicide detectives who are on call 24/7. Requesting a homicide detective would have been the correct choice. It may have seemed fitting to ask for a "night detective" because it's dark.

Revealing mistake: In the scene where Max flips the cab, after it comes to a stop and you see Vincent hanging in the back seat, you can see the yellow "rollcage" bar under his shoulder. (01:32:00)

Other mistake: In the scene where Max and the lawyer board the train, they go down the stairs for their train. Vincent is a level above and gets on the same train somehow. (01:46:00)

Trivia: The film was almost entirely shot in high definition. Director Michael Mann states he did this to capture the night scenes more vividly.

Suggested correction: The number of movies shot in less-than-HD could be counted on one hand.

I believe it refers to the fact that Collateral is considered to be the first major movie to use a digital camera, not the traditional film support.

Question: In the beginning of the movie, just prior to Vince's introduction to Max, what was Vincent doing in Annie's office building? He actually passes Annie (his 5th target) on the up/down escalators. Why not just kill her first?

Answer: He was likely scoping out the building and determining where specifically Annie worked. He couldn't just kill her in public with people around. He had a systematic plan on how and when each victim would be killed.

Answer: Plus it sets up the 5th victim surprise.
