Continuity mistake: Mona Mars throws water in Marlowe's face and as she leaves, we see three pillows propped up against the far wall in the back of the room. Later Marlowe gets up as Canino's car pulls in, and even though no one has gone near them the pillows have been rearranged. (01:39:05 - 01:40:55)
Continuity mistake: The woman and the gentleman in the tux sitting next to Lauren Bacall are facing forward when we first see them as Lauren sings "Tears Flowed Like Wine". In the next shot the camera angle changes and they have moved ninety degrees and are now facing her. (01:06:45)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe sits down in a reclining chair as he speaks to Harry Jones and there's a book on the radiator below the window on the right. No one goes near this spot but later in the scene the book moves to the right. (01:24:55 - 01:26:45)
Continuity mistake: After the beating by the two thugs, Harry Jones helps him up and has his left arm around Marlowe. In the next shot his left hand is holding Marlowe's arm. (01:26:00)
Continuity mistake: Lauren Bacall says to Marlowe, "Could that be stretched to include me?" as they sit drinking at the table in the restaurant. If you look closely the amount of ice in her drink changes between shots. (01:02:40)
Continuity mistake: There's a crooked sixth rail on Art Huck's porch that we see up close as he jumps over it when Marlowe shoots at him. Later when Marlowe says to Lauren Bacall ," we'll have to take his car" we see the railing again and it has been set straight. (01:42:10 - 01:43:40)
Continuity mistake: In his apartment there's a pipe rack in the shadows on the table next to Carmen. Marlowe says to her, "What do you remember about Shawn Reagan?" and in the next shot the pipe rack is lit up. (01:17:35)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe stands next to Bernie Ohls' desk as the inspector asks him to layoff the Sternwood case. The lamp on Bernie's' desk is tilted at a 45 degree angle. No one goes near it, but as Marlowe leaves the lamp is facing down towards the desk. (01:19:00 - 01:20:30)
Continuity mistake: As Marlowe sits tied up by the couch talking to Lauren Bacall, the hat on the couch moves several times between shots without anyone going near it (1945 Version on DVD). (01:41:30 - 01:42:45)
Continuity mistake: As Marlowe gets up when Canino's car pulls in, the fruit in the fruit bowl behind the couch is entirely different than what we've seen throughout the entire scene. (01:40:55)
Continuity mistake: Before Marlowe sits down Dist. Atty. White has a statue on his desk between Marlowe and himself. In the next shot after Marlowe sits down the statute disappears then reappears again in the shot after that (1945 Version on DVD). (01:02:40)
Continuity mistake: When we first see him in Marlowe's office, Harry Jones is standing near the left edge of the desk. In the next shot he moves back about a foot and stands at the center of the desk than later he moves back and is at the edge again. (01:27:05)
Continuity mistake: Marlowe says, "Is Mr. Mars around? I'm Marlow, he's expecting me" to a hostess and her left hand is on the counter and her right hand is at her side. In the next shot both of her hands are out in front of her. (01:06:10)
Continuity mistake: Outside Geiger's house, Marlowe throws his gun down on the floor making Carol Lundgren reach for it. He kicks him and knocks him out but if you look closely he only touches Lundgren's left shoulder with his foot, nowhere near his head. He doesn't hit anything as he falls either. (00:58:55)
Continuity mistake: Lauren Bacall's white pocket book is in front of her on the roulette table as Eddie Mars talks to her but in the next shot when she speaks to Marlowe it disappears. (01:16:50)
Continuity mistake: Eddie Mars is twirling the key to Geiger's house around his right index finger, but when Marlowe says, "Oh, that's too bad, you got a better one?" and we see him from a different angle he's not doing it. Then in the next shot before he finds the blood stain on the carpet, he's doing again. (00:43:25)
Continuity mistake: In front of Geiger's store, Marlowe gets into a cab and asks the driver to follow a station wagon that's filled with boxes. In the next shot the boxes in the back of the station wagon are rearranged differently. (00:39:10)
Continuity mistake: When Marlowe pulls his car up in front of the Randall Arms Apartments and waits for Lauren Bacall his windshield has two stickers on the left of it. A few shots later after Lauren pulls up he gets out and follows her into the building. The car he's sitting in has changed as we see the shadow of the windshield on the front seat and there are now three stickers on this windshield. (00:47:15)
Continuity mistake: At the roulette table a woman to the right of Eddie Mars puts her chips on number 30 as he speaks to Lauren Bacall. In the next shot as he asks everyone to take their chips off the table there's nothing on number 30. (01:11:35)
Continuity mistake: As Marlowe walks back into Geiger's store the second time the secretary opens up a book with her left hand and proceeds to insert a piece of paper into it with her right. In the next shot the book is closed. (00:37:50)
