Continuity mistake: In a close-up of her driving to Bodega Bay Melanie turns the steering wheel to the left and we hear the screeching of her wheels, but the background indicates she's still going straight. (00:11:05)

????

Revealing mistake: When they show the perspective of being in Melanie's driver's seat looking out the windshield we don't see Melanie's legs as you would expect, but a mechanism that allows someone to steer from the passenger seat so the camera has an unobstructed view of the driver's seat. (00:11:05)

????

Continuity mistake: The top of the bird cage that Melanie brings to Mitch's apartment has 24 rungs but when we see it again on the floorboard of Melanie's car it has only 12 rungs. (00:11:10)

????

Continuity mistake: As Melanie drives up to Mitch's we see a lot of fast shadows, like telephone poles, going by in the shot of the bird cage sitting on the floor board, but in the next long shot of the car driving there are no trees or other obstructions on the side of the road. (00:11:10)

????

Continuity mistake: On the last leg of Melanie's journey just before she enters Bodega Bay she's driving on a dirt road, but they dub in the sound of her tires screeching on pavement as she negotiates the turns. (00:11:45)

????

Other mistake: In the long shot of Melanie just before she pulls into Bodega Bay there's a shadow of her car where it shouldn't be, moving from left to right about 100 feet in front of her just below the matte drawing of the background. (00:11:55)

????

Continuity mistake: As Melanie pulls into Bodega Bay she makes a sharp right turn in bright sunlight but the shadow of her head never appears where it should be on the seat behind her. (00:12:00)

????

Continuity mistake: As Melanie drives up the main street of Bodega Bay a kid on a bike appears riding behind her between shots. He wasn't there in the previous shot when they show her behind the steering wheel and we can see back behind her car. (00:12:05)

????

Continuity mistake: As Melanie pulls up in front of the general store there's guy on the right in a dark blue shirt who changes position between shots. (00:12:20)

????

Audio problem: As Melanie pulls up in front of the general store a woman with bags of groceries exits the store. They dub in the sound of the door closing but they didn't dub the sound of the bell on top of the door that we hear later as Melanie walks in. (00:12:20)

????

Visible crew/equipment: As Melanie parks in front of the general store stage lighting and the reflection of a crew member can be seen in her car door as she opens it. (00:12:20)

????

Continuity mistake: When Melanie parks in front of the general store, a loose hose is hanging down from the front of her car. In the next scene as she drives directly up to Annie's, the hose is gone. (00:12:30 - 00:15:40)

????

Continuity mistake: As the store manager takes Melanie outside to look at Mitch's house, the dog license sign on the window of the door is reversed from when Melanie walked up. (00:13:05)

????

Audio problem: They use a different overdubbed tone for the bell on the door of the general store when the manager opens it. Before as Melanie walked into the store we heard the real sound. (00:13:10)

????

Audio problem: As Melanie and the manager leave his store to look at the Mitch's house, they overdub the bell sound when he opens it but neglect to when he closes it. (00:13:15)

????

Continuity mistake: As Melanie and the store manager look across the bay the piece of paper scotch taped to the window above his head is reversed. The picture of the woman is to the left of the piece of paper but when we see it from the inside as Melanie walks into the store it's reversed. (00:13:15)

????

Continuity mistake: When the store manager shows Melanie Mitch's house, the cloud cover is different from what we just saw behind her car as she drove up to the store. (00:13:20)

????

Continuity mistake: The shot of Mitch's house across the bay that the store manager shows Melanie is a matte drawing and doesn't look anything like the house we eventually see (no tall structure behind it, no long road that Mitch uses to meet Melanie on the other side of the bay, and no low treeless hills behind the barn). (00:13:25)

????

Continuity mistake: As she runs down the hill from the school, Melanie passes by the same fence on the right twice. Once in the second shot when she's in front of Annie then again in the fifth shot when she's in the back behind everyone else. (00:13:40)

????

Continuity mistake: As they look across the bay at Mitch's house, the store manager changes position between shots. He moves closer to Melanie as he asks her if she wants him to order a boat for her. (00:14:10)

Trivia: When we see the school children running away from the birds, they were actually running on a treadmill with Bodega Bay footage added in the background.

Question: When the birds attack the town a gas station attendant is hit by a bird and drops the gas hose he is using to fill a car. The gasoline flows down the street and under a car; a man drops a match and lights the gas causing an explosion. Why didn't the gas pump shut off when the man dropped it?

michael g

Answer: The movie takes place in the 1960s, so presumably gas pumps worked a bit differently back then. This is also a small town and probably the gas station had not modernized. There may not have been automatic shut-offs, or if there was, it was faulty.

The automatic shut off is in the handle of the hose. When a person grips the handle they have to lift a levered switch to allow gas flow; the lever is spring loaded so that if it is released the gas will stop flowing. I have looked at older antique gas pumps and they are all the same; even the visible glass gravity flow ones. If that hose was dropped the the gas should have stopped flowing.
