????

Continuity mistake: In the restaurant Melanie doesn't have to poke around at all as she opens her pocketbook and pulls out and the compact and tissue. They must have been the only things placed in her prop pocketbook so they would be ready to come out without any fuss. (00:27:00)

????

Continuity mistake: As Melanie takes the Kleenex out of her pocketbook we can see the latch facing away from her. She doesn't touch it again but near the middle of this scene, as she holds the cotton on her head, the pocketbook is reversed with the latch facing her. (00:27:10 - 00:28:50)

Continuity mistake: When Mitch unwraps the cotton to put peroxide on Melanie's cut, the ashtray on the table is empty. Mitch never lets the piece of cotton out of his fingers until he has Melanie hold it on her head, and no one else touches the cotton on the table, yet near the end of the scene another used piece of cotton appears in the ashtray. (00:27:15 - 00:28:50)

????

Continuity mistake: Melanie cleans off all the blood on her forehead and in her hair with the Kleenex, but in the next shot there's more blood that appears in her hair than before. (00:27:20)

Continuity mistake: Mitch holds the bottle of peroxide differently between shots. The first time he holds it close to her face with his middle finger awkwardly sticking out. In the next shot all of his fingers are wrapped around the bottle. (00:27:30)

????

Continuity mistake: There are two different perspectives when Mitch puts the peroxide on Melanie's cut. The first is the close-up of her face and there's no blood on the piece of cotton. The second is the close-up of him and in these shots there's plenty of blood on the cotton, and they keep switching between the shots. (00:27:35)

Continuity mistake: When Mitch and Melanie are talking in the café, the bottle of peroxide on the table moves from being near Mitch to near Melanie. (00:27:45 - 00:28:35)

Continuity mistake: As Melanie returns to Annie's house the sun is shining brightly overhead and not casting any shadows onto the front door. In the next shot as she rings the doorbell there are two distinct shadows of her on the house, one to her left and one to her right. (00:31:05)

????

Continuity mistake: As Melanie talks about renting the apartment Annie's hair changes slightly between shots. Two little pieces of hair stick out right by her left ear that weren't there in the previous shot when she opens the door. Annie's hair changes in other consecutive shots throughout the film. (00:31:50)

????

Continuity mistake: After they talk about the apartment Melanie wants to use the phone. As she walks through the door Annie looks up at the birds flying and we see the top of her porch and a bare tree. This is wrong, as earlier in this scene when Melanie walks up to the door there are a lot of plants hanging down from the roof of the porch. (00:32:00)

????

Visible crew/equipment: As Melanie drives up to have dinner at Mitch's, the reflection of the cameraman on the inside of the window can be seen moving in the upper-left hand portion of the screen. (00:32:10)

????

Mother in Diner: Why are they doing this? Why are they doing this? They said when you got here, the whole thing started. Who are you? What are you? Where did you come from? I think you're the cause of all this. I think you're evil. Evil!

Question: When the birds attack the town a gas station attendant is hit by a bird and drops the gas hose he is using to fill a car. The gasoline flows down the street and under a car; a man drops a match and lights the gas causing an explosion. Why didn't the gas pump shut off when the man dropped it?

michael g

Answer: The movie takes place in the 1960s, so presumably gas pumps worked a bit differently back then. This is also a small town and probably the gas station had not modernized. There may not have been automatic shut-offs, or if there was, it was faulty.

raywest

The automatic shut off is in the handle of the hose. When a person grips the handle they have to lift a levered switch to allow gas flow; the lever is spring loaded so that if it is released the gas will stop flowing. I have looked at older antique gas pumps and they are all the same; even the visible glass gravity flow ones. If that hose was dropped the the gas should have stopped flowing.
