Continuity mistake: When they all are trying to lure the graboids away from Val, Rhonda looks down the pipe running down the from the water tank. A piece of cloth soaked in water is tied around the pipe and water is dripping from it. When it cuts to Rhonda climbing down the water has stopped dripping. (01:08:45)

Mortug

Audio problem: When Val gets the Cat running he cheers out loud. It cuts to a shot looking up at him inside the Cat, he cheers again but his mouth is closed. (01:10:00)

Mortug

Continuity mistake: When they are picking up Burt and Heather, Burt throws a sack to Val. When it cuts Val catches a totally different sack. (01:11:55)

Mortug

Other mistake: Once Earl stops the CAT at Burt and Heather's house, Val is standing on its roof directly above Earl. Val is looking and talking straight at them. The graboids shake the CAT, Earl drives it forward quite a bit (take notice just how far), but he looks up to tell Burt to hurry but he and Val are still facing in the same direction. They should be facing backward due to the distance they had to move up. Also, you'll notice that Burt is right in line with the trailer as he throws most of his gear. (01:14:30 - 01:15:30)

DrLoomis1978

Revealing mistake: Near the end, Val, Earl and Rhonda are way off the rocks after the blast. When the monster comes up out of the ground and Val takes off, you can see the "ground" bounce. It's definitely a false ground so they can get the "graboid" pushed up through it. (01:24:10)

Continuity mistake: When Val is getting the fuse lit on his bomb to throw to the last Graboid, we see his hands separated, one holding the bomb and one holding the rope. The camera angle changes to a close up of his hands, where they are now both holding both the bomb and rope. (01:24:50)

Revealing mistake: As the last Graboid falls off the cliff at the end, just before it hits the ground, you can see its skin has already been cut up for the "blood" to gush out of upon impact. (01:25:20)

James Ollier

Continuity mistake: Near the end before Val throws the last bomb,. He twirls the fuse leaving a stub left, which Rhonda lights. Val throws the bomb, and the fuse has grown a few inches. (02:00:00)

Continuity mistake: When Rhonda climbs out of the ditch with Earl, where the graboid has killed itself, her backpack is slung over her right shoulder and hanging in front of her. In the next shot when she's standing up, the backpack is on her back.

Bishop73

Continuity mistake: When the snakeoid is chasing Val and Earl after they lose their horses, they run along a fence and the monster causes all the fence posts to fall over backwards. But shortly after, all the fence posts are seen to be upright, although some are tilted a little to the right.

Suggested correction: We only see 4 fence posts fall over in total. Considering there are probably 50+ fence posts there, I don't see how this can be an error.

Continuity mistake: When Val's bomb gets spat back to the rock and scatters the gang, three of them wind up far away from the rock - too far to have made it in the time of the scene.

DavidRTurner

Continuity mistake: At the end, as Val and Rhonda are talking, Val's hat brim is flat. Rhonda walks off, and Earl slams the hood of the truck. When they show Val again, the brim of his hat is curved upwards.

Continuity mistake: When Val drives the dozer to get Rhonda off the water tower, he has the bucket up for her to get down. After she's safe, he drives on, and the bucket is down without his having lowered it.

Movie Nut

Continuity mistake: When Val and Earl are relaxing with a couple of cold ones after they bury the trash, Val's recliner chair changes. From the side it is a brownish-rust color cloth material. In the next shot, from the front view, it is greenish leather. This scene takes place after Rhonda's near miss with the graboid but before the first guy, old Edgar, is found dead.

Continuity mistake: When the "graboids" are testing the buildings, they test the house with the mother and daughter on it. Watch the sky in the background. It goes from sunny to overcast, then back to sunny in a matter of seconds.

manthabeat

Continuity mistake: Reba gets out of their truck at the compound and looks through the binoculars - in the foreground you see the tractor and trailer they use to escape are very close together, or are attached already. When Kevin Bacon and the other guy figure out to use it, the camera pans around and the tractor and trailer are 60-100 feet apart.

Joseph Greene

Revealing mistake: When the graboid starts pulling Jim underground, his wife hands him a board to keep him above ground. You can see the thick board bend rather easily while his wife hands it to him. Also when Jim is sucked under ground it bends quite easily as well, as if it were styrofoam.

RJR99SS

Revealing mistake: When Earl and Rhonda are being chased into the store and they're running along the little boardwalk, the boards are forced up like a wave by the snakeoid. But the ground under the boardwalk is perfectly flat.

Trivia: Reportedly, star Kevin Bacon was at a rough patch in his life during production and didn't understand the appeal of the film or the light-hearted comedic elements. (Even once breaking down in public and exclaiming in frustration "I'm in a movie about giant underground worms!") And thus, he chose to have no involvement in the sequels. It wasn't until some years later that he decided to re-visit the film and give it another chance after it became a massive cult-hit, and discovered that he actually really loved it. Bacon has since gone on record saying one of his dream projects would be to reprise his role of Val McKee in a future film.

Question: Before Burt and Heather are attacked in their basement by the graboid, she puts some bullets and dirt in a machine and turns it on. The machine makes noise and attracts the graboids. What is that machine doing to the bullets and dirt?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: The machine is a vibrating case cleaner, which is used to polish the brass casings of pistol and rifle ammo. The "dirt" is actually an abrasive polishing compound.
