Tremors (1990)
Plot summary
Directed by: Ron Underwood
Starring: Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Michael Gross, Finn Carter
Giant worms begin terrorizing Perfection, Nevada. The humans find out that they can't see but find their way around using their sense of hearing. They are called Graboids. One of them bursts into Burt's basement and Burt blasts it full of holes with various guns and finally kills it with the Elephant Gun. Val takes the CAT Bulldozer with a trailer full of people toward mountains. The graboids dig a trap and they all fall in. Burt throws TNT and runs for some rocks. While there the throw rocks and some TNT onto a patch of ground. The graboid eats it.
Trivia: Reportedly, star Kevin Bacon was at a rough patch in his life during production and didn't understand the appeal of the film or the light-hearted comedic elements. (Even once breaking down in public and exclaiming in frustration "I'm in a movie about giant underground worms!") And thus, he chose to have no involvement in the sequels. It wasn't until some years later that he decided to re-visit the film and give it another chance after it became a massive cult-hit, and discovered that he actually really loved it. Bacon has since gone on record saying one of his dream projects would be to reprise his role of Val McKee in a future film.

Answer: They officially name the creatures "graboids", as that's also what they call them in later films. Tremors is just a clever movie name, and "snakeoids" was just one of the potential names the chinese guy and the kid were thinking of naming them.
