7 questions in season 1

Season 1 generally

Question: In one episode (I think it's My Balancing Act) Dr Kelso is trying to scare the interns, so he pulls his face off and 'becomes' a guy with crazy ginger hair and a very annoying loud voice. I'm a Brit so that's maybe why I don't recognise this guy. Is he supposed to be someone famous?

Chosen answer: This is an American comedian called Scott Thompson, more widely known by his stage name of "Carrot Top".

My Day Off - S1-E9

Question: What is the song playing at the nightclub "The Free Clinic" when JD walks in to see Turk dancing with Jennifer?

Heather Northcombe

Chosen answer: "Absolutely Wasted" by Sporting Riff Raff. Sample lyric: "I wanna get rinsed / get off my face / wanna have a party now in this place / get plastered, pasted, absolutely wasted."

Michael Albert

My Old Lady - S1-E4

Question: In this episode JD, Elliot and Turk all have a patient that dies at the end. JD's dies from old age/refuses treatment. Elliot's dies due to the risky nature of the treatment given, if I remember correctly, however I never understood why Turk's patient dies. He's there for surgery, during surgery the surgeons find something, but they never say what it is. The young man is prepped for surgery again in a late scene and Turk tells him what is happening but we don't hear it. He then dies on the operating table. What was it they found inside the patient? And why did he die so quickly when undergoing surgery for it?

strikeand

Chosen answer: When they were in the operating room the first time, they saw a black mass that wasn't the hernia. At that point they don't say anything, but when Turk is on the phone he's talking to David's dad and says it was a lymphoma. Which is basically a cancerous tumor. They don't mention in the show, but lymphomas can go undetected and spread and the longer they remain, the less chance of survival. Given the way the rest of the Turk/David scenes play out, David's cancer just went unchecked too long and spread too much where there was nothing the doctors could do.

My Occurrence (1) - S1-E22

Question: What's the name of the song that's played just before JD gives Ben the bad news at the end of the episode? It's when he's having a flashback about retesting Ben's sample.

Chosen answer: I believe it is Hold on Hope. The only artist I have seen for it is Guided by Voices. but you may find Various Artists as the artist title. It is on the Scrubs soundtrack.

My Sacrificial Clam - S1-E21

Question: Can anyone explain the title of this episode? I understand the wordplay on "sacrificial lamb", but why "clam"?

Chosen answer: The title could be interepreted in relation to the patient who JD is afraid to treat and how the room is closed off like a clam. In the episode the patient has to be quarantined to a seperate room from everyone else and medical staff that enter the room have to take precautions from entering.

Lummie

My Heavy Meddle - S1-E16

Question: When Turk reveals he rented "Red Dawn," Elliot (as well as JD) says "Wolverines". Since I've never seen Red Dawn, why do JD and Elliot say "wolverines?"

Chosen answer: In Red Dawn, a group of high school students forms a guerilla group against the Soviet invasion. Their school mascot was the Wolverine, so they took that as their name and battlecry.

Grumpy Scot

My Occurrence (1) - S1-E22

Question: In this episode, Brendan Fraser has his arm on fire for a good ten seconds. I've seen this effect before, and his arm has gotta be covered in some kind of fluid that protects his skin, or something. But it looks so good. Does anyone know exactly how it's achieved without him feeling the pain? I'm pretty sure it's not a prosthetic, could it be a false skin wrapped around his forearm?

Chosen answer: It's coated in a fireproof gel under the flammable liquid. It can burn for 10-20 seconds without harming the actor. The bonus features in the Spawn DVD have a whole section on fire special effects if you want to see more.

Quotes

Carla: You can deny you like her all you want. But, I know for a fact, that every time you guys are done "playing racquetball" or "having a conversation" or whatever it is you crazy kids are calling it, you like nothing more than to just lie next to Jordan and watch her sleep.
Dr. Cox: It would be impossible for me to lie next to Jordan, she sleeps hanging from a ramp in the ceiling, wrapped in a cocoon of her own wings.
