Plot hole: After Ritchie tells Misty that he never talked to them through a phone, Misty could have put two and two together and realised that Ash was told to go somewhere by someone impersonating Ritchie and that he might be in serious danger. However, she does absolutely nothing to help Ash, she doesn't even inform Brock about it.
Continuity mistake: When Ash and friends are after Assunta wins, a man in a blue shirt has his left hand raised, but in the next shot, it is not. (00:08:33)
Other mistake: Assunta's Ivysaur attacks Sparky too early, before the battle even started, not to mention Assunta haven't given it any commands during the battle.
Continuity mistake: When Pikachu agrees after Professor Oak says, "That's the spirit!" he is on one tile, but in the next shot, he is on two. (00:11:08)
Continuity mistake: When Misty says that she and her friends have to go to Valencia Island, her bag disappears. This also happens at the end of the episode. (00:14:48 - 00:20:53)
Answer: There are a lot of fan theories around this, but the most common theme is that Pikachu had another trainer before Prof. Oak, who gave him to Ash. Pikachu didn't appreciate being handed over.
