Shogun (1980)

Factual error: Throughout the show, flintlock firearms are used. The show is set in 1600, and the flintlock was not invented until about 1630.

Other mistake: During the sequence when the crew is working feverishly to get Sea Tiger repaired to leave Cavite, there are several shots of a first class petty officer welding a hand rail, a trivial job that would not be necessary for getting the submarine raised and underway.

Revealing mistake: During the opening credits, as a crab descends past the periscope, the string attached to the crab is visible.

The Parent Trap (1961)

Revealing mistake: When Mitch is driving "Susan" home from the airport, in one shot, the knob of the gear selector lever is visible above the dashboard, which means the transmission would be in Park.

Trivia: The submarine used in the movie as a (supposed) nuclear submarine was the U.S.S. Ronquil (SS-396), a WWII Balao-class diesel-electric submarine that had received a GUPPY IIA conversion. The number painted on the sail (509) was selected because it was from a block of hull numbers canceled at the end of WWII and never used.

Factual error: In the movie, Cohan's play Popularity, the sinking of the Lusitania, and America's entry into WWI are depicted as occurring in rapid succession. However, Popularity was on the stage in 1906, the Lusitania was sunk in 1915, and America entered the war in 1917.

Factual error: In the scene from the play, "George Washington, Jr.," a troop of boy scouts is shown on stage. The play opened in 1906, but the boy scout movement was started in 1908 in the UK, and the Boy Scouts of America did not exist until 1910.

Trivia: When Rhett pulls up in front of the house where Scarlett, Melanie, and Prissy are waiting, he says to the horse, "Whoa, Marse Robert!" Marse Robert was one of the nicknames of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

mdwalker

Character mistake: When Melanie and Scarlett are talking with an (off-screen) wounded Confederate soldier, the soldier says he hasn't heard from his brother since Bull Run. Only Northerners refer to that battle as Bull Run; Southerners have always referred to it as Manassas.

Factual error: The party scene at the start of the movie is set in 1927, but all of the women have mid-1960's hairstyles.

Father Goose (1964)

Factual error: The radio Walter uses on the island has no apparent power source; we never see either batteries or a hand-cranked generator.

Columbo (1971)

Candidate for Crime - S3-E3

Factual error: Near the end of the episode, Jackie Cooper fires a bullet into his hotel room from the balcony using a revolver fitted with a silencer. Hayward also uses a revolver with a silencer to kill Stone. This is a classic Hollywood error, as silencers do not work on revolvers (unless noticeably modified), due to the gap between the barrel and the cylinder. They also don't make gunshots nearly as quiet as shown.

Goldfinger (1964)

Factual error: Contrary to popular belief, sudden cabin depressurization in a jet plane will not cause anyone to be sucked out of the plane (unless they are sitting right up against a blown-out window), nor will it cause the aircraft to go out of control or crash.

Character mistake: Early in the movie, a flight deck officer tells Mickey Rooney to hurry up, and Rooney replies, "Very well, sir," which is major breach of Naval etiquette. (Officers say "very well" to enlisted personnel, but an enlisted man NEVER says "very well" to an officer.).

Apollo 13 (1995)

Factual error: At the end of the movie, when the astronauts debark from the helicopter and are surrounded by the crew of the U.S.S. Iwo Jima, there are a number of junior enlisted men wearing combination caps. (The type worn by Chief Petty Officers and commissioned officers.) That they are junior enlisted men is obvious by the rank insignia on their left sleeves and by the silver USN and Eagle emblem on their caps. (Chief's caps have a large gold and silver anchor insignia, and officer's caps have a large gold officer's crest.) The U.S. Navy did, for a few years, replace the junior enlisted men's traditional white hat with the combination cap, but the change was not announced until 1972, two years after the Apollo 13 mission, and the Navy reverted to white hats in 1983, twelve years before the movie was made.
