Gotcha! (1985)

Question: A question was asked of what kind of drink Pernod was. It was answered that Pernod was a aniseed aperitiv. What does that mean exactly? What is the definition of aniseed aperitiv? Also a question was asked what difference did the drink make when the waiter added water. The answer given was very unsatisfactory. It was answered by saying water turned the drink from clear to cloudy white. This is obvious as we can see it in the movie but how does adding water to this drink affect the drink itself (besides changing color)?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: What was meant was an anise aperitif. Anise is sort of a licorice flavor, while an aperitif is an alcoholic beverage served as an appetizer or with finger foods. I believe it turned cloudy white because the waiter added sugar water. It makes the bitter alcohol more palatable. This drink tradition was begun with absinthe, which was banned in many countries and Pernod is a similar-tasting replacement.

The Siege (1) - S1-E19

Question: It was said earlier in the show that the Atlantis crew did not have enough power to dial Earth. Earth Control had no idea of the fate of the Atlantis crew until they sent the video package telling them what was going on, then Earth Control sent reinforcements to help out. My question is; if Earth Control was able to send reinforcements to Atlantis to help out, why could they not send a crew to check on the status of Atlantis? They knew the Atlantis crew made it in the 1st episode.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: Because the ZPM allowing them to dial Atlantis was being used at the Antarctic defense outpost. They couldn't risk making Earth vulnerable to attack from Anubis by depleting it with repeated dialing to the Pegasus galaxy. Once they knew Atlantis was in serious danger, they had no choice.

Grumpy Scot

ZPM from Antarctic was depleted in first dial, dial in Siege was done via ZPM from Egypt (SG-1: Moebius Part-1/2).

I am looking for a sci-fi movie that involved a lady on a space ship. At one point in the movie she exercises by doing an un-parallel bar gymnastic routine. I believe she is the lone passenger on the ship, but she does talk to the captain over the PA. I also seem to recall that the captain is actually just a personality downloaded to the ships computer.

Answer: Perhaps it's Nightfliers? Catherine Mary Stewart works out on uneven parallel bars and the captain appears as a hologram.

Tremors (1990)

Question: Wouldn't Burt and his wife get in trouble for having all the weapons in their house? Even in later movies, there is no sign they got in trouble and Burt continued to have all these big weapons on hand.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: No, there's nothing illegal about any of the weapons they owned. Some of them may have required a Class 3 firearms license, but even this is not difficult (just expensive) for a law-abiding citizen to obtain.

Grumpy Scot

Answer: In some parts of the US, especially in far-out desert towns, home arsenals like this are the norm. There is really no limit on how many firearms or ammo American's can own. Machine guns are illegal, but can be permitted. If you have any semi-auto firearm, it's not hard to convert to a machine gun. Albeit, the firearm will fail apart fairly quickly from the abuse.

Chosen answer: Did they? They are both still voiced by the same actors, so either A. you are imagining it, or B. they changed the voices slightly to make performing them every day easier.

Grumpy Scot

It's true. You can simply tell SpongeBob's voice from season 4 and onwards (in my opinion, downgradingly) changed to a higher pitch tone.

Answer: Also their voices might've changed due to their actors getting older.

General questions

I'm trying to remember the name of a movie. All I can remember from it is the bad guy laying on the ground almost dead. Then the good guy (or girl, don't remember) comes over to put him out of his misery by suffocating him. They say something to the effect of "This is more than you deserve" then before the person is dead the good guy changes his mind and the bad guy lives. Can someone please help me?

Answer: Sounds like the miniseries, "The Langoliers".

Question: What does Dr. Visoza mean when he says that if Peggy "dropped a box of toothpicks" in front of Jimmy Witchard, she would understand how the Intelligence Institute expects a lot from him?

Answer: He's referencing the movie "Rainman." He's saying Jimmy is autistic.

Question: In the scene where The Bride smashes Buck's head in with the door, surely after 13 hours (the time it took for her to sit in the car and 'wiggle her big toe') someone would have noticed Buck was dead and the police would be involved. This would probably lead to them searching his car as well. I know it may be a deliberate mistake seeing as The Bride hasn't been chased for killing anyone else, but there were police in the beginning of the film so they do exist.

Answer: Not necessarily. She probably stashed his body in her room. Nurses would rarely come in as she was comatose, so its likely they only check her twice a day. Also, 12-14 hours is not an unusual shift at all for a nurse, so its entirely possible no one noticed him missing.

I am looking for a title of a movie that I believe was made in the 80's, possibly early 90's. All I can remember is that there was a boy who had a lot of junk, and wanted to get rid of it, but someone didn't want him to and told him it was valuable. I also remember there being a little rat-like creature, and them using the term "scuz-bucket" quite often. I believe at one point there was a tunnel of some sorts, and the creature coming out of behind a dumpster? I vividly remember a point where the boy was at a gas station, and had a station wagon type vehicle full of all this supposed "junk." I appreciate the help.

Answer: It wasn't a movie, it was an episode of Amazing Stories called "Gather Ye Acorns". Mark Hamill starred as the young man in question.

Grumpy Scot

Answer: You may have confused two films together in your mind. It partly sounds like Flight of the Navigator as well.

General questions

I'm looking for the title of a horror movie that I saw a long time ago on Showtime. I think it either came out in the late 80s or early 90s. The only things I remember are: A brother and sister are home alone, and one of the brother's friends I think. Something happens in the backyard causing the ground to open, either a big hole or a large earthquake size crack, where demons/monsters come out of. There's one scene where the kids hide in a closet and a tiny flesh colored monster turns into a dozen smaller versions of itself so it can crawl under the door to get to the kids. At the very end of the movie the parents come home and the kids think everything is back to normal but something comes out of the closet, a monster or demon that came out of the backyard, and the kid screams.

Answer: It was called The Gate (1987). A storm knocks over a tree and the brother and sister accidentally preform a ritual that turns the hole into a gate to hell. There was a sequel released in (1992) which was considerably better with better effects.

General questions

I'm trying to identify an old movie. I believe it was made for American network TV in the early or mid 1980s. It was about a group of children on a spaceship headed away from earth toward a new planet, called 'Demeter'. Along the way, something happens which causes them to pick up an adult straggler and they become imprisoned by a man who turns out to be the brother of a female crew member. There is a cage fight involving a belt with an electromagnetic forcefield hidden inside, after which everyone escapes and the movie ends with one of the kids finding a way to make the telescope images of Demeter clearer, and the images are shown to resemble earth.

Answer: Earth Star Voyager (1988).

I saw this movie on tv about 10 years ago. It was about a high school boy. One night a meteorite crashes into his room and he becomes "magnetic". There was one scene where he was running down the halls at school and all the locks on the lockers stick out. He runs into a room, only to find it filled with metal baseball bats. There was also something about a nerdy girl also getting this "power". At the end she runs to him, covered in metal objects, kisses him on the cheek as he just screams. I think he was also running for Prom King. Sorry I don't have more info.

Answer: It wasn't a movie, it was an episode of Amazing Stories called "The Main Attraction".

My friends swear I'm making this movie up, but a while ago I saw a movie on tv. The main character was a young man whose father had died recently. He traveled to live with his brother where he became a lifeguard, and also did some freelance writing work. Throughout the movie, the man talks to Jesus Christ, sometimes on the telephone, sometimes in person. He also talks to his deceased father. What is this movie called?

Answer: Sounds like Radio Inside (1994).

About 4 - 6 years ago, there was a reality tv show on the air and I'm trying to figure out what it was called. Basically, it was about a killer that was on the loose, and there was a group of people trying to catch him. And he would leave clues, two people would follow the lead, and one of them would be killed. I don't know much about this show, other than small details like a finger in a Sardine, an oil company (?) and it may have occured in a town with water close by. Thank you for any info.

Answer: Murder in Small Town X (2001).

General questions

I'm trying to remember the title of a movie I rented a few years ago. I don't remember what year it was made but I'm pretty sure it wasn't an old movie, it was probably after 1990. The concept of the movie is there's this guy, the main character, who wakes up one day and finds that everyone on earth has dropped dead. Except, he finds one woman and one other man alive, but that's it. It's just the three of them. The plot of the movie is basically the main character finds the woman and since they think they're the only 2 people left of earth, they figure they have to repopulate the earth. But, then the other guy comes along, who is better looking and more cool than the main guy. I'd really like to find out what the title of the movie was. Hopefully, someone knows. Thanks.

Answer: That sounds like The Quiet Earth (1985).
