Doctor Who (2005)

Show generally

Question: This is actually for Doctor 1 but I couldn't find it anywhere. I heard it somewhere that they were going to do only 10 series, but when Doctor 1 fell ill they put in the idea he can regenerate. Is this true? Also is this why a lot of the later episodes were destroyed?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: The show was intended to be ongoing, with no particular plan as to how many series might be involved. But you are indeed correct that William Hartnell's failing health was the principal factor that led to the concept of the regeneration being introduced, with Hartnell himself suggesting Patrick Troughton as his successor, a suggestion that was taken up. This is not, however, why many episodes from that era are missing. At the time, it simply wasn't standard policy to keep episodes indefinitely after transmission, due to the limitations in storage space, and thus many early episodes were simply wiped.

Friends (1994)

Chosen answer: There's a behind the scenes feature on a Friends DVD that shows an example: In "The One After Vegas"(Season 6 premiere), Chandler's line was originally "I don't think they're as much dating as they are drunk." Matthew Perry thought the line wasn't funny and came up with the alternative seen in the episode: "I don't think they're as much dating as they are two bottles of vodka walking around in human form."

Friends (1994)

Chosen answer: A lot of these scenes are shot over the shoulder of one or the other character, if you watch closely, the one whose back is to the camera is often a double. For the most part, they'd film one character's part, reset and have Lisa Kudrow change clothes, then film the other one's part. It's the same technique used in "The Parent Trap" (Lindsay Lohan) and a couple of Eddie Murphy movies ("The Nutty Professor" and "Norbit", that I know of).

Friends (1994)

Show generally

Question: When the friends gang can't get in or out of Monica's apartment because they have locked the keys in or out why couldn't the other gang members let them borrow theirs? In the last ever episode it shows them having a key each.

Shadow5

Chosen answer: That doesn't mean they all had keys before the final episode. The lockout incident happened earlier in the series when Rachel was still living with Monica. It could be that after they got locked out, the girls decided everyone should have a key to their apartment to avoid another similar dilemma.

The Truman Show (1998)

Question: What was behind those rocks Truman was climbing up when he was about 4 and his dad tells him to come down, it's not safe?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: It is never stated directly, but in the background construction sounds can be heard. From this one can gather that parts of the set are being created, and the rock wall is there to keep Truman from seeing it. If he were to climb the wall he would be able to see that the beach behind the rocks immediately ends and becomes an unfinished set.

Mamma Mia! (2008)

Question: Donna is a very musical person because he has Sam's bagpipes and Harry's guitar. But why wouldn't the men just keep the instruments themselves?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: As it was never specifically discussed in the movie, nobody really knows. However, I would imagine it was because she wanted something to remember them by. Or they wanted to give those items to her so she would remember them. Or maybe they wanted to think of her having these prized possessions of theirs. The guitar was actually purchased for Donna.

Matilda (1996)

Chosen answer: What about choosing not to cook precludes owning a recipe book? I'd guess Zinnia bought it simply because it's the type of thing a housewife would own. Or I suppose there's a chance Matilda, who is very resourceful and very fond of books, procured one herself from the library or elsewhere.

Phixius

Answer: As said in the comment above, it is also mentioned in the book that she procured it from the library, and was very fond about learning how to cook.

Friends (1994)

Chosen answer: Gunther is rather particular about his appearance, keeping his hair carefully cut and colored, and is always wearing well chosen shirts and ties. This is what is commonly referred today as being "metro-sexual" which a lot of people consider to be gay. Gay men (stereotypically) are particular about how they look, so she just assumes. Also, since he is SO in love with Rachel, he doesn't have other relationships to prove her opinion incorrect because he is always hoping she will be single soon and notice him. Who can say why he is so in love with Rachel. Why does ANYONE love someone else? Infatuation? Her looks? Her personality? We will never know. Love is funny that way.

Mamma Mia! (2008)

Question: So did they really get married to play 'happy families'? Because when Sophie says 'I don't know which is my dad and I don't care, Sky let's not get married' it sounds a bit like they are playing 'happy families'.

Shadow5

Chosen answer: Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan got married because they loved each other and had done for many years. The daughter changed her mind about getting married because she realised what really mattered to her and that seeing the world while they were young and free wasn't such a bad idea after all, that she didn't need to get married and hang around for her mother's sake.
