The One With Joey's Award - S7-E18

Trivia: The original script for this featured a subplot with Ross seeing Chandler exiting a male strip club, with obvious confusion and assumptions, with Chandler later admitting he only goes there because he likes the sandwiches. Matthew Perry shut the idea down. He's barely in this episode, possibly as a result of this subplot being excised and it being simpler to expand the existing scenes rather than write a whole new Chandler-centric section.

Question: One episode has a very short scene with Rachel + Phoebe in Central Perk, just them, sitting near the door (not sofa). Rachel has a problem, Phoebe is solving, while Rachel eats cake. While chatting, but not mentioned at all, Phoebe tries to get Rachel's cake. End of scene, Phoebe succeeds and Rachel has gained advice but lost cake. Cake is not referred to at all in the dialogue or plot, making it pretty tricky to search for. Anyone know the episode?

Jon Sandys

Chosen answer: It sounds like you're describing a scene in S6 E3 "The One With Ross's Denial", with Phoebe and Ross when they're sitting at a table. Ross has a cookie and a coffee. Phoebe is telling Ross he's still in love with Rachel and Ross is denying it. While they talk, Phoebe grabs Ross' coffee at one point and Ross takes it right back. Then she does the same with his cookie and Ross again takes it back. At the very end of the conversation and scene, she grabs a magazine that Ross is also reading, and when he grabs the magazine back from her, she then grabs both the coffee and the muffin and starts eating the muffin.

The One The Morning After - S3-E16

Continuity mistake: In previous episodes we've seen that from the living room there's a short wall just inside Monica's bedroom (presumably to prevent a clear view inside, as her bedroom set isn't normally there). However in this episode when most of the gang are in her room, they're listening right by the door into the living room with nothing in the way. (00:11:25)

Question: In the UK at least, new box sets have just been released of all 10 series (3 discs per box). Does anyone know if these are double sided or single sided discs? The original DVDs were double sided, which always seemed stupid.

Jon Sandys

Chosen answer: They are double sided. Four episodes per side on 3 discs gives 24 episodes which equal one season.

The Last One (1) - S10-E19

Trivia: A bit too unlikely to be just a coincidence, but I can't work out the significance. The doctor who delivers Phoebe's triplets (the one who loves Fonzie) played the evil head of Wolfram and Hart in "Angel". The doctor who delivers Erica's twins in this episode also plays the evil head of Wolfram and Hart in "Angel" (after the death of the first guy).

Trivia: The spare room (Rachel's) in Monica's apartment has a wall right opposite the door, which serves absolutely no purpose except to block the view into the room from the living room. The bedroom set isn't always built, just when needed, so having that wall makes life much easier. It's completely illogical though, as it's too thin to be a supporting wall, and where it is makes getting into the room a pain.

The One With The Lesbian Wedding - S2-E11

Question: Slightly more wide-ranging a question than just Friends, but it's relevant at the moment. With Massachusetts being in the news for offering same-sex weddings, and apparently being the first state to fully sanction it, was the wedding in this episode (back in the mid '90s) based on any then-current law, or just made up for the purposes of the plot?

Jon Sandys

Chosen answer: Same-sex weddings have been performed for quite some time in the United States. They simply didn't have the sanction of law or the benefits (and costs) that come with it. The ceremonies were purely for the sake of the supporting friends and family of the couple making the commitment.

The One With Ross's Inappropriate Song - S9-E7

Trivia: The joke in this episode, broadcast in 2002, about Richard having a tape of him having sex with Monica, Chandler watching the tape, and then Monica coming in and being furious that he hadn't noticed it wasn't her, plus getting annoyed about being taped over by Richard, is IDENTICAL to one in an episode of Coupling (UK version), broadcast in 2000.

The One With Rachel's Assistant - S7-E4

Question: At the start of the episode we see the end of Joey's appalling show, listing the executive producers as Colleen Mahan, Eric Goldberg, and Missy Krehbiel. Missy Krehbiel is assistant to David Crane, Friends writer/producer/creator, etc. Anyone know who the others are and what their link to the show is?

Jon Sandys

Chosen answer: Colleen Mahan and Eric Goldberg also work on the show they are assistants to Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane.

Question: I've always wondered about this - how is the Friends set/studio laid out? It's fairly obvious that the two main apartments and corridor are one large set with the audience behind the camera (as is fairly standard), but what about Central Perk? Is that part of the same set with the audience...somewhere, or is that filmed elsewhere and shown to the audience separately?

Jon Sandys

Chosen answer: Monica's apartment is centre stage, with Joey's on the audience's left, separated by the hallway in between. Central Perk is on the right of Monica's, and stays up permanently because it features in every show. Ross' appartment is on the right of Monica's but alongside the audience. 1. Monica's room and the guest room formerly known as Rachel's room are not set up all the time because they are often used for filming from different angles. When they are set up it is often on a different part of the set. 2. The poster next to Monica's tv hides a camera hole for filming kitchen/door scenes. 3. The street outside Central Perk is also part of the set, not filmed outside. However I am unsure of where this is in relation to the set. 4. Monica's secret closet is actually a door to the backstage area, the shelves featuring in The One With The Secret Closet were a one time thing. These facts were correct at the end of series nine, details of the layout of the series 10 set are not yet available.
