In & Out

Continuity mistake: At the bachelor party, Kevin Kline has a cigar in his mouth. In one shot, it's whole, the next it's frayed, then in the NEXT, it's whole again.

Other mistake: The day after the Academy Awards, there is tall corn in the fields and the kids are dressed for warm weather. The Academy Awards are in March, not a warm, corn-growing time in Indiana.

Continuity mistake: When Joan Cusack is sobbing in the road and throws herself on Matt Dillon's car, her lipstick and mascara are smeared, suddenly her makeup is perfect.

Emily: Is everybody gay? What is this? The Twilight Zone?

Question: Here is a user comment from the "In and Out" imdb listing. It's about Tom Hank's drama teacher Rawley Farnsworth being the inspiration for this film: "although he provided the idea behind the character, the character as written in the film is not based on Farnsworth himself. The name, the quirky character traits, the Shakespeare lectures, the bicycle, the Midwestern background (Farnsworth was from Oakland CA), the sports coach connection all come from a long term USC theater professor." Does anyone know anything about this?

Question: How did Cameron Drake know his former literature teacher Howard Brackett was gay, if nobody, not even Howard himself, knew it?

Chosen answer: He made an assumption, based on certain things he'd observed, which turned out to be true. Other people in town must clearly have had similar ideas about Howard - witness all the Streisand albums at his bachelor party - but Cameron was probably just the first one to voice it aloud. And it was just as well for Howard, because it set him on the road to discovering the truth about himself.
