Mistakes in the IMDb top 250 - all on one page
Other mistake: When young Vito Corleone shoots Fanucci in the chest at the doorway to his apartment, in a continuous shot, a wound/blood bursts from Fanucci's white vest. When Fanucci proceeds to tear his vest open seemingly in disbelief he has been shot, there is no entry-wound, blood or hole in his white shirt directly under where the wound appeared in his vest.
5: 12 Angry Men
Continuity mistake: In the second half of the film, Frodo has a scar on his lower right cheek, close to his chin. Many times throughout the rest of the film the scar changes position and size on his right cheek. It also appears on his left cheek in flipped shots (most obviously on the slopes of Mount Doom when Sam is cradling his head). (02:31:05 - 02:34:00)
8: Pulp Fiction
10: Fight Club
Continuity mistake: Close to the end when Edward Norton runs up to the front of the empty building and Brad Pitt appears, he tries to break the glass door by pushing a bench into the door, but it doesn't work. He doesn't move the bench and he then shoots at the glass and breaks it. When it shows him walking through the broken door, the bench has disappeared. (02:05:10)
Continuity mistake: As Boromir and Aragorn talk right before Boromir dies, you can see Boromir's right hand gripping Aragorn's left shoulder in the shot from behind Aragorn's right shoulder, but when the camera view changes to Boromir's perspective, looking up at Aragorn, his hand is not there. The scene goes back and forth between these two views several times. (01:22:40)
12: Forrest Gump
Continuity mistake: When one of the stormtroopers unties Han Solo before he is put into the carbonite, watch his wardrobe - he has a disappearing / reappearing jacket on. This is fixed to an extent on the DVD - the jacket is now lightened to almost match his shirt, but it's still shiny like leather. (01:32:05)
Continuity mistake: Merry and Pippin were bound when taken by the Uruk-hai, and the bonds weren't cut until after they managed to escape during the fight. Yet, when the horse almost crashed down on Pippin, he had his arms spread out up near his face, not bound, even though they weren't cut until later. In the next shot, his hands are bound again. (00:31:15)
18: The Matrix
19: Seven Samurai
Factual error: Toshiro Mifune's character, Kikuchiyo, travels to the bandits' camp and steals one of their two remaining fuselock muskets. Shortly afterward, the bandits fire twice at the samurai within five seconds with their last firearm. A fuselock takes as much as two minutes to reload, prime, and fire.
20: City of God
21: Star Wars
Other mistake: When Somerset goes back to the man's house alone, he cuts a sticker on the door with his switch-blade to get in. The first error is the sticker is on the inside and it says "Keep Out." The best part about it is the door opens inward. How did they put the sticker on the inside and then exit? (00:20:45)
Continuity mistake: In a scene near the end of the movie, George enters the Building and Loan with a Christmas wreath on his arm. On hearing that he has a phone call from his brother Harry, he tosses the wreath on a table and picks up the phone. In the next second, the wreath is back on his arm. (01:17:35)
27: Spirited Away
Revealing mistake: In the scene where the medic gets shot, watch the shot where Upham brings the bags up to the injured medic. The next shot there is some fog which then reveals the injured medic. In this shot, watch carefully as the cast rips away the medic's shirt. If you look near the neck, you can see the fake stomach vest he is wearing for a split second - when the actor realizes he ripped too far up, he quickly covers it back up. (01:28:43)Kelsey H.
Continuity mistake: After Leon rescues Mathilda from the SWAT team and dodges the snipers, he shoots out a ventilation fan to make an escape route. He gets off two shots before we see the vent, but when it does we see about 7 bullet holes around the vent. Then the camera goes back to Leon as he continues firing. When the camera switches back, the holes around the vent are different. (01:27:05)
31: The Green Mile
Other mistake: The death warrant for "Arlen Bitterbuck" is dated 1935 but the subtitle in German says 1985. (00:25:15)
Continuity mistake: When Danny gets shot at the end of the film, his paper flies out of his hand. But the very next shot of him shows that the paper is still in his hand being held over his head while he falls backwards. In one of the following shots the paper is back on the floor, but it's on the opposite side it should have been when it flew out of his hand. It's all shown in slow motion and it's very obvious.
Continuity mistake: When the Highway Patrol Officer hands the driver license back to Marion, in the interior shot he's holding it out with his right hand and Marion takes it with her left hand, but in the next exterior shot he's handing it to her with his left hand and Marion is taking it with her right hand. (00:15:50)Super Grover
35: City Lights
38: Modern Times
39: The Pianist
Factual error: An old man appears with children following him. This is supposed to be pedagogue Janusz Korczak. It appeared as if he was just wearing a suit and a Jewish arm band. In the Warsaw Ghetto, Mr. Korczak never wore an arm band and wore his WWI Polish Army Uniform, both as acts of defiance. He was beaten and almost put to death (he had connections) for not wearing an arm band so having one on in the movie is inaccurate.
40: The Departed
Continuity mistake: When Indy goes to save Marion in the tent he removes the handkerchief gag. But when he decides to leave her there, he puts the gag back on and some of her hair gets caught underneath the gag on one close up shot from the left. But when the camera goes to the back of Indy, her hair is no longer caught underneath the gag. (00:56:00)
43: Rear Window
Continuity mistake: In 1955, when Marty drives the DeLorean to the 'start here' line that Doc painted on the street, the line and large white lettering are faded and filthy, but when Marty gets out of the car to insert the hook pole, the line and lettering are bright and immaculate. When he finally starts the DeLorean they're back to faded and filthy. (01:36:30 - 01:38:55)Super Grover
47: The Lion King
Deliberate mistake: At the elephant graveyard, little Simba claws Shenzi in the face. When Mufasa saves Simba from the hyenas, the cuts are gone, a few seconds later. [This was done intentionally, I'm sure, for two reasons. The first being, Disney doesn't let fresh scars linger on the screen too long. Secondly, during that same scene when Mufasa rescues Simba & Nala, he claws Banzai in the rear. To stress the point later in the movie, that severe scar is shown too, but only briefly, it too disappears because of reason 1. Still a "mistake", but there's why.] (00:21:50)
48: The Prestige
Plot hole: Julia dies in the underwater escape trick tank because the axe couldn't get her out in time. However, if she was able to open the lid from inside the tank, get up, over, and down, then close the lid (all quickly, silently, and without assistance) when the trick goes properly, then there is no reason that the four men standing around could not have simply lifted the lid, either acting a key in the fake padlock to preserve the trick, or using a key if it's real. At this point she could have gotten her head above water and draped her hands over the side of the tank to stay up. That done, the crisis is over, and she must only wait to calm down enough to get herself down, or be assisted. Cutter built the tank, so he knew how strong the glass was. The only explanation for using the axe was to allow Julia's death, thus advancing the plot.Phixius
Continuity mistake: In the scene in which Leonard writes on the back of his picture of Teddy, "He is the one. Kill him," we see a shot of Leonard placing the picture on top of his tan jacket on the bed as he goes to write on it. Then, it goes to a close-up of the picture in which the jacket has disappeared and the picture is lying directly on the blue bedspread. It actually happens twice within that same scene. (00:15:15)
50: Apocalypse Now
53: Cinema Paradiso
54: Sunset Blvd.
55: Dr. Strangelove
58: Paths of Glory
Continuity mistake: According to one of the characters, the firing squad is drawn from the 3rd Battalion of the 701st Infantry Regiment, the same regiment as most of the other characters. However, all the members of the firing squad (except the officer and sergeant, who are credited characters seen elsewhere in the film) have "710" on their collar patches. This can be seen when the sergeant, who has "701" on his collar patches, is briefing them.Necrothesp
60: The Shining
61: Django Unchained
64: American Beauty
Continuity mistake: In the first 1968 section, where Noodles rents a car and drives back to his old neighbourhood, watch the background of the wide shot as he is stopping the car. In the close-up that follows when Noodles gets out, two girls have appeared, hanging around a doorway, who were not to be seen the moment before.
70: Das Boot
71: Citizen Kane
75: Reservoir Dogs
Continuity mistake: After Elsie has been kidnapped, there is a scene where a little girl walks up to an old man to ask him for the time. A man notices this and walks towards the old man. The old man is standing in front of a light pole which casts a shadow onto the pavement. In another shot, there are no shadows near the light pole.ployp
Continuity mistake: Harry stands on top of a building with a girl folding paper planes. The plane they fold is folded with a blunt front. He throws it off the building and then the plane flies, all of a sudden the nose is sharp, this is visible. (00:12:10)
Factual error: During the scene where Mozart is being carried away in his coffin by horse and cart there is a brief shot where he is being taken down a muddy path and a farmer is seen with his cows. If you look closely to the left side of the screen you can see a large overhead power line. If you look even more closely you can even see the wires coming out of the pylon. The movie is set in the 18th century and obviously it obviously should not be there. (02:50:50)ItsGav
Continuity mistake: When Nino goes to 'Les deux Moulins' for the first time, we can see Amelie writing the menu on a glass right behind him. A few shots later, we see the glass again and the handwriting is quite different. That's easy to see if you look carefully at the 'd'. Later on, we see the glass once more, and the handwriting has changed again. (01:32:55)
87: Double Indemnity
Factual error: There's a scene when Barbara Stanwyck hides behind an open door to avoid beeing seen by Edward G.Robinson leaving Fred MacMurray`s apartment. To make this possible the apartment door opens outside into the corridor, which is an elegant solution for this situation in the movie. But in the real world no apartment door would open by swinging into the corridor because this would give a visitor standing there a punch on the nose when the resident opens the door.
88: Taxi Driver
90: 3 Idiots
92: Toy Story
Continuity mistake: There's an electrical outlet on the wall below the window (aligned with the window shade's loop) in Sid's room near the Megadork poster, but when Sid throws Woody to the floor and raises the shade (before he scorches Woody's forehead with the magnifying glass), that outlet has vanished.Super Grover
97: The Sting
Plot hole: A vital plot line, obviously, is that Doyle wants to kill the con men who fleeced his runner of the numbers money. He has Luther killed and turns his best men (and women) onto Johnny Hooker, almost killing him, too. What about the third conman, Kid Erie? He is an essential part of the con, as much a part of it as Luther and Hooker. During the setup - just before they fleece him - the numbers runner watches Kid Erie running away. He looks at him, Hooker and Luther in turn. Even if he couldn't identify him he would still be able to inform Doyle that there were three rather than two con men involved. Even so, Kid Erie comes and goes as he pleases. Doyle doesn't have anyone looking for him; he doesn't even mention him in conversation, and in fact consistently refers to two - not three - con men. He makes it clear that he would have to kill his best friend if he even found out about the con, yet he lets one of the central participants go scot free. It doesn't make any sense at all.
98: The Kid
Continuity mistake: After the Tramp has found the Kid as a baby, he sits down by a drain and contemplates dropping the baby in. He puts his cane alongside him, so that it is at right-angles to the pavement (pointing towards the camera). The shot changes, and suddenly it is now parallel with the pavement.Andrew Upton
99: Toy Story 3
Continuity mistake: After Chuckles tells the story of Lotso we see the gang locked up at the daycare center. Jessie comforts Bullseye and looks at the word "Andy" on her boot (with the "A" on the inner side) . Woody returns and when the bell rings for the kids to go outside, we see Jessie on the floor. Notice that the "Andy" on her boot is now different (the "A" is on the outer part of her boot). (00:52:50 - 00:57:10)
101: Good Will Hunting
Continuity mistake: Near the beginning when Lee Van Cleef looks at the the wanted poster on the ticket booth at Tucumcari (just after getting off the train), there are two extra zero's drawn onto the poster (as added by the villain). Van Cleef then takes this poster away with him, and slots it under the door of a hotel room on a later scene - notice that the additional zero's have since disappeared from the same poster. (00:06:30 - 00:09:20)
Continuity mistake: In the motel chainsaw scene, before the Colombians pull out their guns, there are several food containers, a bag of cookies and a soda can lined up neatly on a table, seen in multiple shots. After the skirmish, Hector pulls the chainsaw out of its box and Tony is leaning against the table with the items now all scattered in different positions. A few minutes later, Manny shoots his way in. You can see the table in multiple shots and the items are back in their original positions.ben6679
106: La Confidential
107: The Apartment
Plot hole: When Indy is stepping on the letters at the end, trying to spell out God's name, he steps on J, incorrectly, causing it to collapse. When he falls through, however, he grabs onto another letter so as not to fall down. The letters he grabs onto and pulls himself up are an L and a Y, which are not in the word Iehova, so should have collapsed too. (01:46:20)
Continuity mistake: When the house first becomes detaches from its foundation and becomes airborne, Russell is nowhere to be seen, although every angle of the house is shown, including underneath, the front porch and the back porch. He knocks on the door and tells Carl he chased a "snipe" under the porch - but he cannot be seen after liftoff and prior to knocking. The same thing happens near the end, when Dug claims to have hidden under the porch.MovieFan612
114: All About Eve
115: Batman Begins
116: Some Like It Hot
Continuity mistake: In the final shoot-out scene where Clint Eastwood kills 5 men in rapid succession, Clint crouches and exchanges gunfire with two deputies who are standing side-by-side. A blood stain suddenly appears on the abdomen of the younger deputy on the left, but there is no bullet hole, it does not coincide with any gunshot sound effect, and the deputy does not react to the wound. A moment later, as Clint continues firing, both deputies topple over backwards.Charles Austin Miller
Factual error: In the scene where a chemist is preparing a solution to give to Mrs. Goebbels which she uses to kill her six children, the chemist is holding a modern day conical flask with the brand name "Schott" marked on it. Flasks pre-1950's did not have these markings.
121: Die Hard
123: Raging Bull
125: The Great Escape
126: The Third Man
130: Pan's Labyrinth
132: My Neighbor Totoro
Factual error: When Esposito revisits the murder scene, he asks Morales whether he would prefer the culprit to receive the death penalty. Morales answers that he would not, claiming that to doze off and fall asleep (hinting at execution by lethal injection) would be too good for the man who raped and brutally murdered his wife. Execution by injection has never been practiced in Argentina - where the last execution was carried out in 1916, by shooting - and was legally enacted only in 1977 and practiced the first time in 1982 (in both cases by the state of Texas). Thus, it seems anachronistic that anyone would equate the method with capital punishment in 1974, when the scene is set. (00:24:00)
136: The Gold Rush
137: Howl's Moving Castle
Continuity mistake: When Howl first flies with Young Sophie, he wears a ring on each hand. As they take off, one of the rings momentarily vanishes.
139: On the Waterfront
140: Inside Out
142: The Seventh Seal
143: A Beautiful Mind
Factual error: The filibuster scene gives the impression that the Senators were powerless to stop Jefferson Smith's speech. However, they can make a speaker shut up if at least 3/5 of the Senators vote to. From the Senators' reactions, a lot of them probably would have voted to silence Smith. (Clearly, if this had happened, the movie would be much less interesting).
147: The Elephant Man
Continuity mistake: In the very last scene in New Zealand when Jordan is giving a motivational speech, he approaches his first target in the audience and says 'Sell me this pen.' As he does so, he holds out a pen in his right hand. When we cut to the shot to the person's face, we see that the pen is in Jordan's left hand; this goes on and on with every person. (02:52:10)Allister Cooper, 2011
149: V for Vendetta
150: Blade Runner
153: The General
Continuity mistake: When Annabelle is helping Johnny fill the locomotive water tank, the water spout comes loose and Annabelle gets soaked. A few seconds later, her hair and clothes are completely dry again. (Later, in her memoirs, Marion Mack said she was not told this would happen and it was a complete surprise to her!). (00:51:00)hgwalters
155: Dial M for Murder
157: Gone with the Wind
158: Gran Torino
Factual error: Walt's medical records contain an error - on the left side of the folder, his address is listed as "Detroit, CA" and it's correctly listed as "Detroit, MI" on the right side, although as pointed out in another entry, the house number is completely wrong in the medical records.MovieFan612
160: The Sixth Sense
Plot hole: After the kidnappers kill the trooper and then one chases after the 2 eyewitnesses you can see that they are on a straight road (no turns and he catches up to them fairly quickly) but the next morning when Marge arrives on the scene of the 2 bodies she arrives from the direction of the trooper's body (the first shooting). After examining the bodies of the eyewitnesses she asks her deputy "where the trooper is" and the Deputy points in the direction she just came from and states "down the road a bit" how did she miss it? She would have had to have driven right past the trooper's crime scene to get to the 2 bodies.
162: The Deer Hunter
163: There Will Be Blood
164: The Thing
165: Finding Nemo
166: The Big Lebowski
Continuity mistake: When the Dude is in Jackie Treehorn's estate, he pencils over a pad of paper to see what Jackie wrote down while he was on the phone. He then hurriedly crumples up the piece of paper and shoves it in his wallet. Then, when we see the Chief of Police of Malibu looking through the contents of The Dude's wallet, the paper is there, neatly folded in fourths.
169: Cool Hand Luke
171: Kill Bill: Volume 1
Revealing mistake: When the swordmaker writes "Bill" on the window, take a close look. The window has been wiped before (as happens at the end of the scene) and "re-steamed" - you can see the outlines of the wiping from earlier takes, with a clear contrast between that pane and the others. (00:52:45)Jon Sandys
Audio problem: When Maxim gives Mrs. De Winter the bunch of flowers, right after they are married, she says a few times "lovely", the last time she says it, her mouth is closed.
174: Shutter Island
175: Hacksaw Ridge
Continuity mistake: When the Privates are having their furloughs authorised, Colonel Sangston walks in with Corporal Cannon. Only those two men walk in. Corporal Cannon moves from the doorway to give Desmond Doss his rifle leaving no-one by the doorway. After Desmond refuses to touch the rifle, the Colonel shouts at Desmond. Out of nowhere Captain Glover mysteriously appears in the doorway. (00:48:40 - 00:50:10)Pie Man
177: Mary and Max
Continuity mistake: When Mary first opens the phone book at the post office she lands on Finklestein but when she puts her finger on the name she chooses it as Hororwitz, even though she never turned the page again.
179: Gone Girl
180: Into the Wild
182: Blade Runner 2049
Continuity mistake: When K is cornered by the scavengers, he gets out of the car after they cut the door open. In the shot of one of the scavengers running up to K to attack him, nothing is hanging out of the car door. K then breaks the scavenger's back with his knee and the seat belt is suddenly hanging out of the door. (01:02:45)Casual Person
Factual error: The movie is supposed to be in the 15th century. In a scene we see a priest, wearing a Jesuit robe. But the Jesuit order was founded in the 16th century. So it's impossible that a priest wearing a Jesuit robe appears there.
190: Stand By Me
191: Hotel Rwanda
196: Jurassic Park
199: 12 Years a Slave
201: The Truman Show
Visible crew/equipment: When Truman takes his high school sweetheart to the beach, her "father" comes to get her. There is a shot through the father's button cam showing Truman backing away. Look at Truman's shirt and you will see not one but two human shadows. One is the father and the other is the "button" cameraman. (00:25:30)
202: Million Dollar Baby
Continuity mistake: After the boy's Noel-Coward-lookalike father says, 'Et les fruits?', goes into the kitchen, and disappears out of shot, watch the cat on top of the bookcase to the left of the door. Before the boy runs into shot, the cat suddenly changes position and a mysterious lens flare appears on the right of the screen, showing that it's actually two shots edited together.
204: Mad Max: Fury Road
207: Amores perros
208: Before Sunrise
Deliberate mistake: In the end sequence, when the joyous Valley of the Wind people run past Yuppa and the old woman to welcome back Nausicaä among the living, the same group(s) of people are seen twice running from the right to the left.
213: The Princess Bride
Continuity mistake: When Westley and Inigo are duelling, Westley flings his sword so that it sticks into the ground and then athletically flips from a bar to where the sword is and nonchalantly reaches down and back and takes it out of the ground. But if you watch, he lands too far away from the sword to do this.
214: La La Land
215: Catch Me If You Can
217: The Maltese Falcon
221: The Grapes of Wrath
222: Monsters, Inc.
224: Donnie Darko
225: Barry Lyndon
Factual error: While Stanley Kubrick boasted about the authenticity of the candlelit interiors, he must have missed the little drawing of a steam train on a period map - 40 years before trains were invented.
226: Paper Moon
229: The Terminator
Continuity mistake: When the Terminator says "I'll be back" he walks out of the police station. The cop inside the building looks out the window, looks very surprised, and you can see the headlights from the car shining on the cop's face. But when we see the car just before it comes crashing through the building the headlights aren't on. In the next shot of the cop the headlights are still shining on him. (00:57:25)
231: Groundhog Day
Visible crew/equipment: After Phil drives the truck off the cliff, and it explodes in a burst of flames, there is a shot of Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliot staring in shock at the disaster. The two actors are bathed in an orange glow supposedly coming from the flaming wreckage. But in the lens of the TV camera Elliot is holding, there is a noticeable reflection of the lighting equipment used to create the glow effect on the actors. (01:04:15)
232: The Wizard of Oz
233: The Bourne Ultimatum
234: Dead Poets Society
235: Annie Hall
Audio problem: While Marcello Mastroianni is waiting at the station and Sandra Milo's train can be heard arriving off-screen, we hear much whistling by a steam train, but when it finally appears, the train is being hauled by a diesel locomotive. [As a side note/explanation - all sound in Italian movies, including the dialogue, is recorded afterwards, sometimes by different actors, eg. Claudia Cardinale in real life has a regional accent.]
Continuity mistake: Quint embeds his machete into the wood at the side of the boat, but in the following wideshot the machete is gone. Then as Orca starts to move, when Hooper says, "He's chasing us, I don't believe it," the machete is back. But when the shark leaps onto the boat the machete is gone again, and then as the shark devours Quint the machete is back for him to grab, so he can valiantly stab the shark. (01:44:30)Super Grover
239: The Help
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Skeeter is on the phone with the lady who is interested in the book, she has an ashtray with a lit cigarette in it. In the next shot it is gone and the cigarette is in her hand, the next time it shows her the ashtray is back in its original position.
Visible crew/equipment: When Fred kisses Peggy, a boom mic is reflected in the left side of the car.
243: Twelve Monkeys
Continuity mistake: In the final scene in which a man is shot in the airport (part of this scene actually recurs throughout the movie), the psychiatrist woman leans over him to hold him as he dies. From one angle, he reaches up to her face and his hand is clean. In the next angle, his hand is covered in blood as he touches her face.
245: Before Sunset
247: Beauty and the Beast
Continuity mistake: In the 'Gaston' song sequence, near the end, Gaston is sitting in his huge antler chair with Lefou. In the wide shot, there is a bear rug behind the chair. The camera does a close up of Gaston, then in the next wide shot, the chair is on top of the bear rug. Also, after this, Gaston gets up off of the chair and in the next shot, both the chair and the rug disappear completely. (00:29:20)
249: Dog Day Afternoon
