Monk

Mr. Monk and the Big Game - S5-E3

Continuity mistake: When the principal walks into her office, where Monk and Natalie are waiting for her, she places an armful of folders on her desk and sorts through them. When the camera shifts to Monk's POV, the folders are back in her arms.

Mr. Monk and the Big Game - S5-E3

Continuity mistake: During a 30-second timeout, the scoreboard in the background is counting down the time. As the scoreboard hits 12 seconds, the shot changes to Mr. Monk and the team huddle. The scoreboard appears again in the following shot, for the remainder of the timeout. When the scoreboard reappears, the clock has more than 12 seconds on it.

Mr. Monk Can't See a Thing - S5-E4

Continuity mistake: The firehouse's number is 53, and is seen on the various fire trucks throughout the episode. However, in an establishing shot at the opening of the episode, you can see letters for "Eng. Company 1" and "Truck Company 1" over the garage door. This is because Fire Station 1, located in Los Angeles, was utilized for filming.

Mr. Monk, Private Eye - S5-E5

Continuity mistake: When Linda is showing the apartment to the Captain, she has her phone in her left hand and crosses her arms. Her arms stay crossed, but then in a later shot, with her arms still crossed, the phone is in her right hand.

Mr. Monk, Private Eye - S5-E5

Continuity mistake: When Jay pulls up to the marina, he parks at an angle and quickly jumps out and then we see him take off in his boat. When the Captain arrives, Jay's car is no longer at an angle and is parked properly.

Mr. Monk and the Class Reunion - S5-E6

Continuity mistake: When Natalie is noticing Monk's nickname on his registration form, you can see a female extra with black hair, a gray outfit and a purse on her left shoulder walk past Natalie on the left side of the screen. Twenty seconds later, as Natalie is turning and preparing to walk away, the exact same female extra walks past her again, again going in the same direction. Also, in the same shot, you see a male extra with a satchel over his shoulder walk past the camera as Natalie is pulling the form from her purse, and he briefly and instantly reappears walking past Natalie again at the point where she grins and says, "I don't know!" for the second time. Mr. Monk and the Class Reunion - S5-E6

Continuity mistake: Just after the touch football game with Kyle, Monk tells Natalie, "He missed that ball on purpose. He dropped his hands." But Kyle didn't drop them: he kept his hands up and deliberately missed the ball. Monk, who always notices every tiny detail, wouldn't make such a mistake. (00:32:20)

Mr. Monk and the Class Reunion - S5-E6

Continuity mistake: At the start of the episode, when Katherine Rutherford is killed, she lands on her stomach with her eyes wide-open. Yet when Stottlemeyer and Disher arrive and see the cops looking at the body, she is now lying face-up and her eyes are closed. It is hard to believe that the police would move the body that much without first marking its original position with tape.

Suggested correction: It's a TV and movie trope that cops outline a body with tape or chalk, that's what photographs are for. But if someone found an old lady lying on her stomach, especially without blood, they might roll her over to check if she's OK or could be resuscitated.

Mr. Monk and the Class Reunion - S5-E6

Continuity mistake: During the touch football game, when Natalie first throws the ball to Monk, he catches it and a guy in a blue T-shirt and jeans is running up behind him. Angle switches as Monk twists out of the way, and it's a different guy wearing black shorts instead. A few cuts later and Monk runs past the same guy in black shorts again.

Mr. Monk Gets a New Shrink - S5-E7

Continuity mistake: When the cleaning woman's body is found, she's lying on the floor face up. A short time later, despite repeated admonitions that nothing should be or has been touched, the corpse has somehow turned itself over and is now lying face down. (00:02:05 - 00:07:45)

Mr. Monk Goes to a Rock Concert - S5-E8

Continuity mistake: There are two mistakes when Natalie runs up to Monk after he leaves the port-a-potty. First, notice that when Monk is replying to Natalie's first question, her thumb is sticking out, but it isn't when the shot cuts to a front shot of Natalie. Secondly, as Natalie is leading Monk away, her purse has gone from being over her shoulder to being over her elbow, and back when Monk and Natalie turn to see Stork's body fall out of the port-a-potty. Continuity mistake: When Monk and Natalie are first talking to Kendra Frank, when Kendra says,"Look, they're trying to say he OD'd! Okay? That's impossible! He's been clean for 17 months! I know, I talked to him about it every day!" you can see that Monk has his right arm down by his side. But when the camera changes angle to Natalie replying,"Well, Kendra, we were there. We saw a needle in his arm," Monk's right hand goes from being by his side to scratching the side of his cheek with his finger. (00:13:10 - 00:14:35)

Continuity mistake: The lighting and position of the sun changes constantly throughout the episode and between scenes. For example, when Monk and Natalie are at the first aid tent, it looks cloudy and the lighting suggests that it is midday. Yet in the very next scene, when Monk, Natalie and Kendra catch up to Stottlemeyer, Disher and Jared, it appears to be sunny and late afternoon/early evening. (00:19:00 - 00:25:05)

Continuity mistake: When Kris Kedder is on stage performing "Peggy's Gone to Memphis," notice that his 12-string guitar keeps changing positions between shots. In most of the long shots, he's holding and playing it. In most of the closer angles, it's hanging at his side and he's holding the microphone instead. (00:30:15)

Mr. Monk Meets His Dad - S5-E9

Continuity mistake: When Julie talks to Monk on the phone, her hair is down over her right shoulder but swept back behind her left one. When she hangs up and hands the phone to her mom, the hair is suddenly covering her left shoulder instead, and now her right shoulder is bare. (00:17:15)

Mr. Monk Meets His Dad - S5-E9

Continuity mistake: Jack's big rig has a huge Christmas wreath on the front grill. When the truck loses its brakes, there's an overhead view of it careening down the road, and the wreath has disappeared. It's back in the next shot, though. (00:34:30)

Mr. Monk Goes to Jail - S2-E16

Factual error: Death row prisoners cannot donate organs. No doctor participates in an execution and after the lethal injection the medical examiner must wait at least fifteen minutes to test for cardiac activity before pronouncing the prisoner dead. This is enough time for hypoxia to render the heart, lungs and kidneys useless for transplant. Apart from this, organs intended for transplant must be removed within minutes of the death of the donor. Prisoners are not executed in operating theatres.

Mr. Monk Goes to Mexico - S2-E2

Trivia: According to co-producer Tom Scharpling, the Mexican homicide cops are purposely written as parodies of Stottlemeyer and Disher, right down to their attitudes, their ranks, their suits, and Captain Alameda's mustache. Even the bumbling lieutenant's name is a little joke on Disher. Plato means "dish" in Spanish.

Show generally

Question: If Monk is afraid of germs, then why does he keep touching things that could possibly have germs on them like parking meters or books?

Answer: Notice also that in the opening credits scene when he is touching parking meters her also wipes his hand on his clothes each time he does it.

Answer: That's the thing about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It's not something rational. He just has to touch things like that. It's not something he can rationally think through. However, since part of his disorder includes an obsession with cleanliness, he also has an assistant walk around handing him wipes periodically. It's like when he gets a cold and uses both a humidifier (because that's what you use when you're congested) and a dehumidifier (to counteract the effects of the humidifier). He may spout rationalizations after he does something, but his compulsions exist outside of any rational thought whatever.
